  • A train ride from Prague to Munich on the EuroCity train 'Franz Kafka' for just €15 in 2nd class or €35 in 1st class, showing the train, bistro car and scenery. For train times, fares & tickets see www.seat61.com/trains-and-rou...
UPDATE: In Dec 2017 train service between Munich & Prague was almost doubled, from 4 to 7 trains each way per day. All trains now have air-con cars and a minibar, but there is no bistro car. For current information see www.seat61.com/trains-and-rou...

You may be interested to know that there has been a severe train accident with several casualties at the route couple of weeks ago, prompting the Czech government to finalize preparations for expansion and modernization of the railway line between Domažlice and German borders. God knows it's been too late decades ago. This oldest, one-rail cross-border part of the track suffered from having been neglected by the Communist regime (it had to cross the Iron Curtain and it was not meant to be used by regular travellers, who were forbidden to leave the country) and its current state was always meant to be a temporary solution. Hopefully, things will get better and safer in the coming years. The good news is that the route between Prague and Pilsen has become significantly faster in the last five years, benefitting from extensive repairs as well as the currently longest railway tunnel in the Czech Republic.

The civilised way to travel indeed, particularly when it's only between two European cities. I just cannot understand how some (many!) people prefer to take the bus or plane for such a short distance as is the case between Munich and Prague, lower price notwithstanding.

Ah! Those sounds in Praha station brought me great memories.
May I ask how much does the ticket cost?
I really liked the views crossing the river. When I've travelled to Praha from Bratislava I guess we arrived from the other side... =(
It's always nice to have the possibility of having lunch in your own seat, but I think I prefer to go to the restaurant car haha

I’m catching the train from Munich to Prague in a few days. I just paid around 9-10€ (one way)! And booked it yesterday, so just a few days in advance. Lufthansa’s direct flights would have cost me almost 500€ (return), haha xD (I always take the train on that route)
Yes, the trains from Bratislava arrive from the other side at the main station (hl.n.), coming from north-east into the station. The crossing of the river is on the south-west side of the city centre, so only trains from Munich and the western part of the Czech Republic are crossing the river there.

nice for the odd penny piching tourist to be actually using that connection. For the rest its sub-par rolling stock at high prices like the 1h30 trip to Regensburg for 23€. Because of EU wide bidding for regional lines they are now a player in domestic services within Bavaria allowed to charge the standard rates mandated by the regional (state subsidised) transport network wherin one would expect modern trains like the ones operated by DB.
I don't mind clunky waggons from the seventies and presumably underpaid personel as long as they're priced accordingly (like Flixtrain who are doing a real good job).

There are several options to cross the border, you could go via Dresden, as Mark said, or via Cheb and Karlovy Vary, or if you're visiting the south of the Czech Republic, change at Plattling and Bayerisch Eisenstein for Plzen. For regional transport, Bavaria or Saxony and Northern Bohemia have a joint ticket that's interesting (the Bayern-Böhmen- or Sachsen-Böhmen-Ticket, a variation on the German Ländertickets). Local tickets can be a little cheaper, especially with the Czechs, but you're spared of the hustle to go to the counter each time, trying to explain where you want to go.
