      Chris is the founder (with Brother Adam) and had enormous energy and talent in forming the musical style, harmonics and never grabbing front and center for being a creating / innovator mindset ... having said that his brother now has done a few arrangements .... where their Producer / Arranger Darren Rust did not - he is great as well. When Home Free gives its all to 5-part harmony, they spare nothing. Those dissonances are part of their signature, especially when Adam is singing. In my opinion, their tight harmonies and timing are unsurpassed. You would no doubt enjoy their "Helplessly Hoping" and/or "Do You Hear What I Hear" -- both with phenomenal arrangements. Also, on Chris's channel you'll find his masterful arrangement of "What Child is This".

    Chris arranged this one - Adam did Do You Hear. Chris often uses 'less than traditional/ expected' harmonies/progressions, but he said he used The Blenders as an influence for this one. The chords at the end are amazing. Your whole body waits for that resolution.

Tim's foundational notes are, as always the very backbone of this group. Their version of Mary Did You Know is just stunning. Please, even if you don't react to it, enjoy it for yourself. Also, let me hook you up with a totally different version of Angels We Have Heard on High --- A Brazilian Metal singer named Dan Vasc. He is a wonder to behold. Is it too much to ask for all 3 to get onto next year’s Christmas list? He does one Christmas song per year. Oldest to newest is: Angels We have Heard on High, Adeste Fideles and O Holy Night. If you can only choose two I’d vote for the last two. Thanks for your consideration.

I keep this beautiful song in my heart (the Brazilian version of it) because it reminds of my beloved grandma during our Christmas celebrations among family in the past... very touching! When you mentioned the organ playing comparison I got curious to know what kind of instrument you play and if you plan to share some of your music/playing skill in the future here in the channel... Besides, I’d like to suggest something from Brazil for a possible future reaction: the instrumental composition 'Samba Pro Rapha' by Yamandu Costa (he is one of our greatest current musicians and he created this song to pay homage to Raphael Rabello, who is considered one of all-time best Brazilian classical guitarists). Not exactly Christmas or Holiday music, but another song they sing in beautiful 5 part harmony is Brothers in Arms. When the dissonance hit at the beginning your face said it all with full truth! I knew that meant you loved it. The harmonies throughout just kind of hold you hostage in anticipation of the final resolving chord. Then you can take a breath and relax. So effective. I can't imagine how difficult it was to unlearn all the old song that we've heard since children in order to learn these complicated chords here. The moment a familiar passage would come up, I would find it challenging to let go of that and dive into the new unfamiliar stuff. A lesson in concentration! Really interesting arrangement and an excellent informative reaction yet again! Thank you.

    • @SirHairless
      @SirHairless  Před 7 měsíci +3

      The emotions shown in the face are things that can't be hidden! It's an interesting point you raise about unlearning the original; when it comes to such arrangements (at least from my experience) I can imagine they're thought of in a different way - as a separate entity to the original version. It's the same song (story), but the harmonic progression/journey (the chapters) are different. The experience of practising and learning it, though, is very different to the experience of hearing it for the first time! Thanks for watching!

    Great reaction! I particularly like that you show us the interesting chords on the piano. So many reactors just describe chords by “letter names” which doesn’t mean a lot to those of us who may have sung in choirs but never majored in music. I can read a musical score, and have some minor experience in sight-reading, and I have the “ear” for music, but can’t usually describe what’s going on with the harmonies and what makes them special.
    Subscribed tonight in hopes of hearing more of your great analysis of Home Free and Voiceplay as well.

      Thank you, I appreciate it! Unless you have perfect pitch, letter names really won't mean much to most people, so context is vital. I still use the letter names just so it's clear I'm talking about a different chord (e.g. G is different to D), but the context is still the most important thing
      Please feel free to check out my several previous Home Free reactions (in the first one - Ring of Fire - I include a transcription of the introduction)

    Interesting. As far as Austin goes, when you hear him singing 'May Day' he demonstrates he can do either head or chest voice on the high note. He did that to show off that he can do that at will. Thanks.

    New subber! Excellent reaction! Have you heard Rob and Austin sing Nessun Dorma? It becomes quite obvious that Rob could’ve had quite a successful opera career! ❤

    It’s very contemporary in parallel with the traditional. Very complex; Chris is known for that. I enjoy it because I know each note is intentional. I felt that they were respectful of the original, even though they took liberties. I so love their harmonies and you seemed intrigued by their harmonies. Thank you for the analysis. I enjoy learning new things about music!

The Herald Angels Sing", "We Wish You A Merry Christmas", "Joy To The World", "Sleigh Ride", and "Bless This House". Some solid 6-part harmony.

    I love 'disgusting filth' lol! As a preacher's daughter and someone who grew up partially in an actual religious commune (a group known as the Fisherfolk, who earned multiple gold records for their 1970's style folk Christian songs), I have a particular horror of the way hymns can get 'modernized' by people who don't trust their audience to 'get' them any other way (I don't think HF is doing this btw! I bring it up to gripe about the way some folks mess with hymns in a way that doesn't honor them). I come by it honestly-- that group I grew up in was deeply associated with hymn writers, most notably Carl Daw, Jr. who was my literal neighbor! He was a contributor to the Hymnal 1982. I also got to help tune the organ at our home church every year from age 12 onward. I totally agree with your assessment of the organ feel from Tim's line!
    This version sounds wonderful and is complex and glorious in all the right ways... but it doesn't thrill me. I'm married to a Methodist *and* have all this history with traditional hymns, so I think this is a 'me' problem and likely both an unpopular and rare opinion ;) The complexity of harmonies is superb though, and it's visually pleasing despite the fact that they're seated. I initially pictured them scattered through a congregation singing gloriously surrounded by everyone else with their various musical abilities, hehe.
    It might just be me missing that descant! In any case, your analysis is thorough and engaging, thanks so much for it!

    • @darsynia
      @darsynia Před 7 měsíci +4

      @@nancyholter5646 Yeah, it's not even really a criticism, it's mostly about my relationship to traditional hymns, heh. It wouldn't have fit into the arrangement anyway! I liken it to someone who can't appreciate a Christmas tree without a star on the top-- plenty of people put angels or some other thing, and they're not 'wrong,' it's just a weird way our associations can ruin good things for us!

I find it very interesting because they always have such good arrangements. And yes, Austin does use his falsetto all the time.
