    I always say 1984 was like a Greek tragedy - so wonderful with the most painful ending imaginable.

    84 was the first time a lot ( me )of Chicagoans got a taste of a pennant race, what a great season that was, and the heartbreak...

    Been a Cubs fan since late 60's. Seen Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Andre Dawson, Bill Buckner, Bill Madlock, Rafael Palmero...all great players...I think Mr. Sandberg had all 5 tools, maybe a 6th, as his feel for the game makes him my all time favorite Cub. Thanks for the memories Rhyno!

      Can’t argue, although Ernie in his prime with back to back MVPs on terrible teams, was no doubt his equal and had superior power.

    If it wasn't for Carey/Stone, Sandberg, and wgn I wouldn't have known how great and how terrible the Cubbies were. Even though I have hometown team now I'm still and always will be a Cubs fan at heart.

    • @Tommyd479
      @Tommyd479 Před 3 lety +2

      He’s the best I’ve ever seen at the position. When he retired he was Top 3, but you could say Alomar passed him. Biggio was close, but nowhere near as smooth with the glove. When Sandberg first retired, he was usually ranked 2nd behind Morgan. He came back in 1996-97 and it kind of hurt his legacy.
      Sandberg was the most complete player in baseball in his prime from 84-92.

    I’ll admit I never saw Rogers Hornsby or some of the other greats play, like Charlie Gehringer, Eddie Collins, Robinson, but I’ve seen all the modern ones, and I think Sandberg’s the best I’ve ever seen. And yes, better than Morgan and Alomar.

      He was a Bonafide threat early in his career. He was like watching Mickey Mantle at 2nd base. Sandberg was a true natural and the first 5 tool 2nd baseman (he had a lot more power than Morgan, who is still the best ever).
