- Felix Mendelssohn - three Caprices for piano op. 33
Mendelssohn composed the three Caprices for piano, published as Opus 33, between 1833 and 1835, and were devoted to his friend Karl Klingemann (1798-1862), Secretary of the Legation of Hanover in Berlin and London, and that was his travelling companion on his first visit to England in 1829, which also included Scotland and Wales.
Despite of the freestyle its title suggests, the structure of these pieces are adjusted to bithematic contrast that in the IXX century identified with sonata form, and begins with a slow introduction that assumes the character of an improvisation.
Surprisingly, these magnificent pieces for piano, the most refined expressions of romantic pianism and totally unrelated to the virtuosity exhibitionist, are not integrated to the repertoire of the great piano virtuosos.
It isn't the case of the British pianist Benjamin Frith, who recorded for Naxos the complete Felix Mendelssohns' piano works except his Songs without words . The integral alluded, also includes all piano and orchestra works.

Mendelssohn compuso los tres Caprichos para piano, publicados como opus 33, entre 1833 y 1835, y se los dedicó a su amigo Karl Klingemann (1798-1862), secretario de la Legación de Hanover en Berlín y en Londres, y que fue su compañero de viaje en su primera visita a Inglaterra en 1829, la que también incluyó Escocia y Gales.
A pesar del estilo libre que su título sugiere, la estructura de estas piezas se ajusta al contraste bitemático que el siglo IXX identificó con la forma sonata, y comienzan con un introducción lenta que asume el carácter de una improvisación.
Sorprende que estas magníficas piezas para piano, expresiones del más refinado pianismo romántico y totalmente ajenas al virtuosismo exhibicionista, no integre el repertorio de los grandes virtuosos del piano.
No es el caso del británico Benjamin Frith, quien grabó para el sello Naxos la obra completa para piano de Félix Mendelssohn excepto las Canciones sin palabras. La integral aludida incluye, también, todas las obras para piano y orquesta.

In these intriguing Caprices. Mendelssohn emulated, like the the later Brahms, the temperamental virtuosity of Paganini. Felix was hypersensitive to the fine wiring of his central nervous system and the speed of blood circulation, which was revealed in these pieces as well as the chamber and symphonic works, by the velocity of reiterated notes and leaping chords for the left hand against swathes of melodic quavers in various rhythms in the treble. His travel lieder defined his love of rapid movement, anticipating the modern world.

I like the 2nd one the best---such a lovely piece. the first one is good but seems rushed in sections to me---the transitions are too short IMO. the last one has a great intro, but what follows isnt equal to the intro. But #2 is pure genius, just lovely .
