  • NYCNext and the Floral Heart project are gathering today to remember, recognize and celebrate those lost to Covid-19 in Queens. In addition to laying a floral heart in memory of those lost, we will celebrate our community through music and togetherness. This is the latest in a series of events aiming to bring spontaneous joy to New York City.
Willie Martinez has been a familiar face in New York City’s eclectic music scene for well over thirty years. As well as being one of the most sought after drummers on the Latin Jazz scene today, Willie is also a prolific arranger and composer. Willie's considerable rhythmic and vocal talents have been featured with groups performing everything from Gothic Funk at the quintessentially New York rock club CBGB’s to Afro Cuban jazz on the venerable stage of the Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall. Willie will be performing with the Willie Martinez Quartet.

    About the Floral Heart Project:
The Floral Heart Project is an ongoing effort by artist Kristina Libby to help provide healing, compassion and sympathy for those impacted by COVID-19. She chose flowers as they are a traditional gift during loss and hearts because they are a simple way to showcase love and support. The hearts have appeared in Times Square, Bryant Park, Herald Square and iconic locations around New York City and in coming months, will be seen in the US and globally. This is in collaboration with leading floral provider 1-800-Flowers.com, will present a healing ritual and concert at Rockaway Beach. The event is intended to help recognize and relieve our collective grief and then to make room for hope, joy and possibility.
