As one who has been there since the Ziggy days , Bowie quite literally re-invented himself from his David Jones period ; seeing a niche that needed filled in British music at the time ; i.e. he bridged the gap between heavy rock and pop , and also managed to incorporate both into his ever changing sound . Bowie belongs among the greats - the man is a genius.

What’s so amazing is, David began changing himself out of fear of inheriting the inevitable mental illness that plagued his family. He ran from it w/a vengeance by making himself someone else- “going with it” in a way; to assure he wouldn’t fall into a permanent state of Anything...as not only his poor brother had- but the majority of the rest of his family. He often mentioned how death and funerals were quite frequent in his family all due to some type of
Mental illness, so I’m sure he battled those thoughts and probability constantly- a Parallel theory of Hamlet As having to go along with his bordering insanity, in order to remain sane. Then, as most people do...at a certain age...finally adjust to just their “own skin” and ultimately “Bowie” wanted to Alas just be known as...David Jones; the very person who caused him to begin that journey of discovery and comfortability he so bravely strived for. It’s so awesome and odd that his changing personas constantly, created the very things that other people all needed in their lives too- to be comfortable in THIER own skin too...and the world as a whole, really-always being like 15yrs ahead of everything. It’s really prophetic if you look back at what he was either portraying or saying at a certain time and then flash forward a decade or so, and THEN it fit right in. So oddly amazing. He was literally the pioneer of pioneers. He may not have been the originator of all of those arts, yet he was in the sense that he’d grab something he loved and turn it into his own version and that process itself is what made him so Flippin unique and one of a kind.

Under Pressure was a hit, and it's still a good song. But it's nothing in comparison to The Man who sold the World. He was a trend setter, Intellectual, and had a huge influence on the Music, Clothing, Movie Industry. He was "Godly".. I will forever miss him, but so glad we have his works to reflect on. We are only now, just catching up to him when he was in 1972. Just transfixing!!

This is weird and reminds me of the first time i met David. I was pissed and dying for a pee and noticed the telephone box in Heddon Street and when i opened the door, there in front of my eyes was David having a crap and shouting out "shut the door ya cant" and at the very moment i knew i had been inspired to write a song for up and coming , Elton.

These people bring nothing to the discussion and add nothing to the exhibition.
    "Under Pressure" is a classic.
This is a masterclass in how to turn the interesting into shit.

I don’t know...to me, ANYTHING on Bowie is amazing and brings something to us. I thought it was great to hear these people’s enthusiasm...they can’t help not being as informant- they’re like animated kids just being super excited about one of their heroes- THATs what i dig on seeing; listening to the same excitement that I got just seeing pieces of it, even knowing I’d never be able to see it myself. Just seeing everybody in a row smiling from ear to ear with giddiness is absolutely wonderful.

"Hand written lyrics won't exist"??? what a load of sheets, course they will. I find it much easier to get lyrics written down by hand pen/pencil/paper/any object I can sketch words on in a mad rush before I forget them.

They say we will never know what Bowie thinks of this...Crap! He knew about it and donated a lot of stuff to it and, as far as I know, he was very pleased with it. Whatever!!!!

Ian Rankin actually makes a few valid points. Re. the supposedly fascist salute. Even if David was talking cocaine induced nonsense during the 1976 period he was also posted in flyers of the Anti-Nazi League around London in 1976/77 as having made a gross political error. This was the period of punk rock emerging and the politics were mainly left field in London and the Anti-Nazi League had a strong representation with the youth. Because the punks liked his music he got off lightly. Fact.

Hey Steve, On the whole this lady was very positive about Mr B. However to be fair to her she was coming into the world of music right when David was trekking into a decade when he said "he wishes someone should have told him how to behave". I still enjoy the 80's DB however if there was one period where you could forgive people for not listening a second time this was then. UP is not a song that I play - partly because it isn't on an album of his but partly it is not as strong as other songs.

I grew up with Bowie and bought every record in its week of release from 'Aladdin Sane' onwards. 'Under Pressure' was the first single I didn't love automatically. After another 3 plays, I actively disliked it. The first album where that happened was the one after 'Under Pressure', 'Let's Dance'. I remember that day vividly. Bowie in boxing gloves didn't bode well but the record... words still fail me. Came back on board with 'Outside'.

what a bunch of old farts apart from Ian Rankine...picture them sitting in a library talking about a book.who knows?maybe he is away to Switzerland to live out the rest of his life with his wife and family...a beautiful thought.

shouldn't music buffs be the ones to give an opinion? 'audience' members are drones and have zero real perspective of Bowie's personal collection. Only a fellow musician understands. Watching this makes me feel like I am in the principal's office.

Poppycock. The song's yuk. It's filler. Pretentious lyrics. Not David's usual high standard of wording.
