I kinda wish they'd kept the flashbacks. They really add to a nice touch to the moment of Masked Man regaining his humanity. That cutscene with Salsa and Samba would have been fine if it wasn't for the burning corpses.

Huh, I just thought those were recycled "ground on fire" sprites from Chapter 1.
It would make salsa and samba the only major characters to appear in the end sequence.

I feel like throughout the story we didn't really get to see Lucas' relationship between Claus and Hinawa, and those cutscenes would've actually made up for that. I don know why they weren't kept, it would be way better and I feel like it would make the ending more emotional.
Alec really doesn't care about his life if stands on edge of a cliff during an earthquake.

The burning carcasses on the ground, that's pretty dark as well as the trees burning alive
True but the tree part doesnt make sense because an entire forest was on fire in the beginning of the game...

The video effects and colors make me believe that THIS is what lucas sees when he looks into a happy box.
it explains what they do... they show you what you want to see most.
Because Regular Show was a thing before Mother 3.
well were never specifically told whos eyes the flashbacks are through, its implied that its claus, so maybe the colors change because of claus' visor being damaged from the battle, or the initial bolt of lightning at the start of the fight, happy boxes would be built with high quaility to keep people watching them, a happy box type thing may be in claus' visor to keep him working for porky as a "greater good" but as his visor gets damaged it starts to show him old memories, his mother's voice only makes him feel even worse, for in an attempt to bring justice he has only brought pain to his family, he removes the visor and sees lucas, instead of him being happy like in the cutscenes, hes hurt, claus realizes what he has done and cant live with the crushing guilt, he fires the lightning, killing him, and ending the fight.
i have a theory.
maybe the effects and the colours of the final battle's unused cutsenes are suposed to represent Claus' memories as a kind of cyborg. b cuz Porky turned Claus into the Masked Man,and this Hinawa's ghost line reads: "Claus, you are not Porky's robot. you are our son!" what could be a possible explanation to the unused cutscenes appearing to have some colours at some moments, as well with the static effects. it could be Claus trying to access his own memories as a cyborg, something that he couldn't do as the Masked Man according to Porky. (static effects explanation) And the colors might represent the feelings he felt some parts of the memories' events. like green representing happiness, the red representing angery and blue representing sadness.

The fuzzy effect is very well done for the Masked Man cut scenes, almost displaying how far into his mind he had to reach to see. Its good they should have left it
They removed Alec's because he was in the 100th floor of New Pork City Tower when the last needle was pulled,
Alternatively, as revealed in unused music and sprite data, there is another ending that was ultimately removed from the game due to frightening scenes. In this ending, rather than Claus coming to realization that he is just a slave of Porky, Lucas accidentally kills him, without Claus ever coming back to his sense. After pulling the final needle, Lucas is destroyed emotionally, mostly due to that his mother was killed when he was young, his hometown was transformed and abandoned by evil, and he was forced to kill his mindless brother. He then enters a psychological state, named "Lucas's Nightmare". This is believed to be the games true final boss, but an unbeatable boss, killing Lucas in the process. The Dragon enters his soul and infuses to rewrite the world, similar to Leder's story. This world is basically a set frame of time in Lucas's hometown, without Porky and his minions. This rewritten world is what you see in the ending of the game where you move the End? logo around and talk to others.

Actually, the unused boss was originally meant to be backgrounds, used to represent Lucas's current idea of Claus.
Ex: Grey humanoid figure: Lucas thinks that Claus is a robot.
Golden angel like figure: Lucas believes Claus is dead.
Unsettling pictures of Claus: Lucas believes Claus wants revenge on Lucas, or Lucas fears Claus.
Pictures of actual Claus: Lucas believes Claus is still his brother.

0:08 My guess is because of the 2 roasted dogfish lying dead on the ground, that was most likely too graphic for the final release.
The flashbacks were for an unused final boss, they're distorted in most parts, possibly to depict Claus' mental status during the fight.
2:14 isn't shown in the ending part of the game is because Alec was in New Pork City at the same time Lucas pulled the seventh needle. You can tell this is true because after beating the Porky bots, Alec is one of the few to gather around Lucas and the DCMC on the 100th floor to see whats going on.

God... This game is fucking amazing. I'm so upset that Itoi doesn't want to make another game. I know that Mother 4 is being created, but by fans. I don't doubt that it will be a great game, but it's not Itoi...

It was not cancelled. The team decided that they should change the name in fear of Nintendo taking down the project. But, yeah, they are hitting way too many problems at the moment...like Shane Mesa taking away his tracks...

Jack Whalen well for one porky dies after giving a depressing apology , a battle with gygas happens and gygas unconsciously erased himself from existence which Basically meant the events of all 3 games were completely warped and when Lucas pulled the pin the world was reborn new with out gygas it's pretty sad how these two villains story end porky dies Finally apologizing for his actions and gygas technically killed himself ...it get really depressing

My theory is that Itoi wanted the final battle to be long and uncomfortable. The cutscenes make it clear that you're getting through to Claus and create a sense of progress. In the final game the fight feels like the same turn looping forever until the tail end
Lucas' hair while he's in his pjs makes me think of Calvin from Calvin & Hobbes.
So here are my theories for why they were cut.
1. The "armageddon" scenes were probably cut since they show actual living characters. It also makes the ending more apocalyptic and less hopeful. The final ending is ambiguous and makes it clear that by some miracle, the dragon destroyed the island without harming anyone.
2. Claus' flashbacks were probably just cut to change the pacing. The final battle is told entirely from lucas' point of view, with obvious details like "the face looked like lucas". By switching to Claus' memories, the player might be confused, breaking immersion. These scenes still happen, but instead of showing them to us, we just see Claus pause to have a flashback.
have you discovered any cutscenes with Pokey dying? I saw a couple of unused sprites that suggested that he would have actually died instead of being protected forever
It may seem obvious You know how Alec's log house plays in the ending scene(when osohe is falling) I think that's supposed to go with the Alec's destroyed house and the volcano erupting

I'd guess it was too long for the music playing, but I also think the dead dogfish might have been one reason.
Supposedly the ending was a lot more tragic and a lot had to be edited. I don't know how true this is.
i actually have the feeling that the osohe castle and pigmask ship destroyed scene replaced the alec and salsa scenes, because their leitmotifs play at that scene

They would have interrupted the fight, and thus stopping the flow of pain and remorse the player is feeling through the fight... Btw, these are extremely interesting! How did you find these? I've been wondering for a long time what those sprites would be used for...

I also read some dialogue that was unused... Apparently the 4 characters memories are all fabrications, they arn't real... (well atleast kumatoras) kumatora and duster never had a mother... And they once ask Lucas what it's like to have a mother... They also say that hinawa is watching over them as they are going to pull the final needle. :D
Well, that part about their memories is somewhat said by Leder, when he talks all citizens of Tazmily were given false memories to avoid them to do the same wrong deeds and ultimately wasting and destroying Nowhere Islands.

The true memories of the "'People of the White Ship'" (Tazmily citizens before Porky's arrival) were retained inside the Hummingbird Egg (aka "Egg of Light"), while being replaced by the story they came up with. Leder reveals it and more to the party, making one of my favorite moments in Mother 3.

That first ending cutscene hit pretty hard for me.
the way the flashbacks are set up with the static kind of reminds me of the intro scene to earthbound and how everything degenerates into static after the final boss is offed.
might be a call back, or i might just be looking for importance where there propably isn't any.

Fun fact: every cutscene in the game actually goes unused in the English version.
The static in the unused flashbacks and the visual effect of the screen turning black (2:02) plus the unused fight backgrounds makes me think that originally the final fight was going to be similiar to that against Giygas. The unused "Call" option would have had a similiar function to "Pray" and would have allowed you to call out for Claus so he could remember (or call for Hinawa's help so she could make him remember), thus triggering the cutscenes; at the end of the last cutscene, Claus would have been overwhelmed by his memories and the emotions they evoke in him until the screen just turns black and he shuts down for good, similarly to what happened to Giygas at the end of his fight. In that sense, the end of the fight would have probably been darker and less emotional, as we wouldn't have seen Claus slowly regain his senses and tell his final goodbyes to his family before emitting his last breath

@kyurem117 I know how you feel, but some of these are better off unused... We got the game we wanted because some of this stuff WAS removed. But some stuff were removed because of GBA limits, so that's pretty sad :-
Given with the music, it seemed it was more likely to be used in Tazmilly as the Happy boxes. Though these would've been cool for the final fight as well. It would've been cool to maybe have them appear in a second playthrough instead of the first as an Easter Egg of some sort...

the unused cutscene with Alec in it was removed probably because when people tested it a black box would appear and there was no way to fix it so they removed it leaving its remains unused
