You would really have to define what you mean by "develop HS and college soccer".
The whole structure of doing sports through school is always suboptimal to going pro earlier. Imagine the concept were reversed and if I wanted to get good at math, I to spend 8 hours a day playing soccer well enough so that I could get accepted into a decent math program?
Through US structures, you might develop more athletes in general, but the best of the best will most likely not ever come from colleges.

Domestic American soccer (clubs) will always be at a disadvantage. Even if it is done the "American way", the best players 9/10 times will be sold to the bigger European leagues.
The reason why it works with the other sports (NBA, NFL,MLB, etc.) is because they are already the best leagues in the world. With soccer, this will never be. Applying that ideology to soccer MAY be counter productive.

I think the interest is increasing more and more. America is very isolated, but thanks to many factors, the US talent is getting better and more stars are in the mls. Eventually the top US athletes will play mls if it becomes the best market n it will along as Americans take more of an interest. Americans will be interested if usa wins the world cup or goes far and that will only happen of we don't play mls players lol

@matsalvatore9074 The talent will get better as the sport and MLS becomes more popular in the US, yes.
However, the US invented sports already have best leagues and is accepted by the global market as the best.
The MLS has to compete with several top/best leagues in Europe. The best American players will always play in Europe, as they should.
Just as the best foreign players play in the NBA and thrive.

It does not ‘work perfectly fine’ for American sports. Basketball is clear example of a lack of discipline and structure in the youth, and why much less talented teams can compete with the US. I think you’re focusing on AMERICAN sports, which distorts the view dramatically.
High school and college soccer is simply cannot offer what academies offer. Consistency, knowledge, care for the athletes developments.
Isn’t it quite blatant that all of our best athletes move overseas as soon as they show potential? I honestly think this idea is so misguided.
