  • Filmed live at the Edinburgh International Book Festival 2015. He was once part of 1980s pop duo The Communards but later resurrected his career as the Reverend Richard Coles, and is currently tending to his flock in a parish in Northamptonshire. In Fathomless Riches, Richard explains how he reconciled his old life in that hedonistic and highly politicised decade with a more contemplative self which made him one of the inspirations for the clerics in the sitcom Rev and the movie Bridget Jones’ Diary. Chaired by Richard Holloway.

Thank you for your comment and the opinion. I thought I was the only one who can see him and his partner for what they really are or were. A pair of frauds and hypocrites to say the least. It made me a bit sick when I realised what was going on and that is just a tip of an iceberg I'm sure. I didn't even try or want to find out any more about them both, their lifestyles and motivation. I know and respect grief and someone's feelings and pain but that's about it I respect about them to be honest. How can they even become priests or vicars and then live the way they did? Telling other people how to live their lives, preach the gospel, word of God, talking about God, his commandments, morality, decency and righteousness? That is what makes me sick or my skin crawl as you put it the most. I didn't know anything about him before he started showing his face as a vicar on TV which was quite unusual and drew attention. I actually thought and believed he would be everything he was supposed to stand for and more as he came to it all later in life. I really thought he would be older, wiser and a true vicar. I honestly fell for it at first although it was quite unusual and strange. Them it started to slowly unravel and made me question or surprised with his life choices, life style and his true motivation. I never knew about his past life and career before and didn't have am idea he had already tried the sympathy card for fame or attention by pretending to have HIV. What an absolute abomination? How can you even think it, let alone do it and at the time of the aids epidemic which included his own friends? And now he's making money out of his grief all, milking the death and people's sympathy. Talking about it on every single show on TV and radio he can think of or get paid for! Absolutely disgusting and demoralising. They were a perfect match and not for a good reason. He's also a bare faced liar and not ashamed of it as he admitted it on national TV himself, especially now he's retired and nothing can hurt him or threaten his retirement or employment. He was not in a celibate relationship but would and probably did lie about it when asked to protect his job and position. His partner did lose his license because he couldn't hide his alcoholism and being unfit for the job anymore but he did. I never thought I would or could write about it all or find somewhere to do it but now I'm glad I did. I never thought I would be brave or clever enough to do it, actually. So I'm grateful and impressed by you two for your comments and speaking your mind. It is like living in an alternative reality or an upside down world these days more and more. Good is bad, bad is good, decency is outdated and ridiculed and indecency is accepted and celebrated, etc etc etc. Reminds me of the Emperor's clothes if you remember the tale? The king was naked but only a child could see it and would speak out about it to the adults. Nowadays, the children are manipulated, corrupted and brainwashed from an early age that even they can't see it. Not to mention the internet, social media and mobile phones which completely taken over their and our lives and natural instincts, time and activities. Still, I find Richard Coles, no longer a vicar, and what he says these days an absolute abomination and moral and spiritual degeneration, twisting and turning everything to his benefit and philosophy to excuse and explain or worse, legitimise his own lifestyle and agenda. It has nothing to do with christianity or any other religion, simple decency and morality. He's absolutely debauched and shameless in it. How they both became ordained and carried on the way they were and got away with it is beyond me. They spoilt it for me and I will never trust for look at the church and its clergy the same way. It put me off for life or at least for Christmas. It honestly makes me wonder why they decided to become amd managed to be ordained. It's a mockery and a genuine insult to the church as a whole and the people who try and follow their religion and beliefs. Imagine being a parishioner and having to listen and witness the antics of these muppets? And worse, to read and find out what they and their lives were really like behind the closed parish doors? Wouldn't you lose all your faith or at least have a hard time dealing with it? And now he has retired he doesn't have to hide any more or lie about it and doesn't care either. He doesn't even think how it may affect the people who knew and listened to him or even someone like me who cannot believe the hypocrisy and what he says out loud now. It's a disgrace and demoralising beyond any limit and is being promoted and advertised on every possible media. How is it possible and allowed to happen? Who is promoting him and his debauched and demoralised philosophy if you can call it that? He's the biggest fraud I have seen for a long time and should retire and be kept away from the public. They were oth a fraud when they were vicars and now instead of just going to retire he has gone to the next of not top level. He never had any shame decency but played a long game to get what he wanted and where he wanted to be. He went against everything the church he was representing and part of by stealth and would hide and lie to cover up his real lifestyle and nature. He doesn't have to anymore now and is showing his true colours. His latest interview I tried to watch with sympathy and in hope of him redeeming himself and his previous choices or behaviour with Sally, of Bridget Jones films, did the exact opposite. I listened with disbelief and then couldn't listen anymore to the nonsense and twisted things he was saying. With a straight face and complete and utter conviction and self confidence. And the poor or gaslighted? Sally was nodding to his every word and agreeing with the absolute nonsense he was telling her. Was she paid to do it or just brainwashed by him and his fake persona? I'm not sure and I'm not sure why she agreed to do it anyway. I couldn't stand it and tried not to get upset or angry and let them finish. It was a waste of time and only made things worse in the end as I found out more than I ever wanted to or needed about the not so and not anymore reverend ex vicar R. C. And his alcoholic dead partner who he keeps calling a husband. Their life together and as individuals was an absolute mess and a fraud. They both had nowhere and noone to turn to or live a normal life so they turned to and lied their way into the church to get what they wanted. A job security for life, a big house free of charge, tax free income and an easy wealthy lifestyle within the safety of the institution of the church. They automatically benefitted from it all and gained instant respectability and recognition without having to earn it or work for it. They profited and used the church and from its status by default. It's enough for me...
