The entire history of the world cup, from the dominance of Supertf or just Super and Space, to South Korea's Ryujehong, Miro, Fleta, Ans and Lip, all the way up to Saudi Arabia's win with Sirmajed and KSAA, and everything in between. Players from the San Francisco Shock, Lunatic Hai, Dallas Fuel and Seoul Dynasty alike all contributed to this tournament, making it the most important in all of Overwatch, even more important than Overwatch Leaugue. New heroes like Mauga have all received new patch notes because of their use in this tournament, even heroes like Winston, Illari, Reinhardt, Tracer, Genji, Lifeweaver and Symmetra received new lore, but most notably Sigma Overwatch.

The GOATS comp was poorly developed as the time(2018 OWL playoff comp was either 3 dps or 3 tanks with mercy being the only support), Wrecking ball just came out and at the time it was considered to be used as a counter against the GOATS comp as well. After experiencing the 17 OWWC, the S.Korea community wanted their players to have flexibility on their roaster so they can adjust any meta,since Tobi from Lunatic-Hai didn't performed well as Mercy in a Mercy meta in 2017. Therefore, it was important for the 2018 S.Korea roaster to show their fans how flexible their roaster was, with experimenting a Wrecking ball comp.
