This "paradise" are the Carteret Islands, a tiny South-Pacific atoll near Papua New Guinea. Soon they will be gone: the first islands to be completely swallowed by the ocean as a result of global warming.
While the debate about the culprit -- Nature? God? The West? -- is undecided, the fate of the 2000 inhabitants is already sealed: Now they will be evacuated to Bougainville, a bigger island ravaged by civil war and high crime rates. These "climate refugees" have no choice but to build a new life. For they will never be able to return.
CARTERET NOW! is a film about a group of islanders who, faced with the looming destruction of their habitat and only home, have to handle a scheduled and inevitable catastrophe. It is a film about the fear of loss, the act of saying goodbye and the arrival in an uncertain future. Most importantly, it is an intimate account of how three generations prepare for a historically unique event.
Die Carteret Inseln waren traumhaft schöne Re- fugien: Weisse Sandstrände umsäumten einst die Küsten des Atolls. Oberhalb der Strände reckten sich majestätische Palmen gen Himmel und spiegel- ten sich bei ruhiger See im türkisblauen Wasser des Pazifik.
Die Palmen liegen heute umgestürzt in einem Meer aus Schlamm. Die Strände sind bereits versunken. Die Carterets werden aufgrund der Erwärmung des Meeres als erste verschwinden.

Heute früh habe ich eine Stundensendung darüber gesehen, zu sehen in Arte+7. Nur eine Kleinigkeit würde ich in die Diskution über die Ursachen der globalen Erwärmung und der Anstieg des Meeresspiegels, was für eine Rolle spielt den Wetterkrieg der Supermächte als HAARP bekannt? Ist die unermässliche Co2- Emision nicht gerade eine Folge davon?
