    Fukuoka is the main city on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's main islands. It's a great base for a exploring the rest of the island, and taking day trips to Kagoshima, Sakurajima, Kumamoto, the Beppu Hells (Beppu Jigoku), Nagasaki, Yufuin, Dazaifu and Yanagawa. In Fukuoka itself there's the castle ruins, shopping, Canal City Mall (with a One Piece show every night), parks, seaside areas, a zoo, aquarium, islands in the bay and more. Here's my round-up, with my itinerary, things I didn't do, travel tips and recommendations.

    I've no desire to return to Kyoto, especially with the tourist boom now, but love Fukuoka. Mountains, islands, beaches, easy access, calm environment.

      It definitely is a chilled, easy-going place! It's difficult to enjoy places when they're so crowded so I think the answer is to spread tourists out more, so everyone doesn't flock to the same places!

      Agreed, I’m glad we visited Kyoto & didn’t stay in the main tourist area but I have no desire to return. I’m also considering staying in Yokohama next time instead of Tokyo as it was more chilled out but not far on a JR line to get into the Centre 😀

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  Před 5 lety +1

      @@masqueradingasanadult6600 You don't have to go very far outside the centre of Tokyo if you want to stay in a more chilled place - in Setagaya have a look at Jiyugaoka, Nakameguro, or Kichijoji and they're all very close to the city :-) When I went to Todoroki Gorge, I was surprised how it felt like a much smaller town and it's in the Tokyo suburbs really.

      @@masqueradingasanadult6600 um, actually Yokohama will be crowded too, especially with Chinese tourists visiting, er, Yokohama's Chinatown,... (why?!!) (^_^) ... anyway, I think any town in Koto ward is the best,... especially Kameido,... quiet, no foreign tourists but still convenient to Tokyo central areas.

      I recall being on the Shinkansen & seeing so many tourists getting off the train to go to Kyoto. Straight away I filed Kyoto in my mind as 'FORGET THAT PLACE'!
      I far prefer the quieter rural areas & places that are not too touristy, even though I'm a tourist myself. Mmmm that sounds arrogant, but there you go.

    When I went to Kyusu in April 2019 I stayed in Kumamoto as my base point. Although most of the time there I actually visited stuff in Kumamoto itself. Though one day I did visit Beppu on recommendation of my Japanese language teacher. As for Fukuoka, I have to visited that myself oddly enough it was not on my radar ^^ Was a nice video to see. I lived in Kyushu a couple years back in the 90s. I remember Fukuoka not being my favorite city on the island. I liked Nagasaki best, then probably Kumamoto. But you could have a lot of fun spending two days in Fukuoka for sure.
    Real reason to be in Kyushu though is to experience the natural beauty of more rural Japan. Smaller towns, nature hikes, that kind of thing. If you spend your whole stay in Kyushu in the cities, you’re definitely missing the main point of being in Kyushu I think.

    "We've also been to an active volcano" My british countryside brain recoiled in terror at that statement lol, 'Aren't active volcanoes where films either start or finish?' :)
    How does filming effect your holidaying? I get the impression that it does interfere with your ability to enjoy some places but that it also causes you to be more exploratory and adventurous.
    My anime-loving-heart also sqeed when I saw that you were so close to Saga prefecture lol (zombieland saga). I'm not sure that you missed anything by not going there - kindof the whole point of the anime was that Saga needed saving from being boring and provincial :).

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  Před 5 lety +2

      Haha, people live on the volcano so it can't be too bad! :-)
      Filming does take planning, and I'm always thinking about I need for the video. However it's great to look back on and there are so many things I'd forget otherwise, and editing videos helps you get over post-trip blues!
      I haven't watched Zombieland Saga - I love how anime locations are often exactly like in the anime though!

      It's a little more difficult but not impossible! Although recently I was in Matsushima, a small seaside place and EVERYTHING was fish in the restaurants - I had convenience store dinner though. Fukuoka wasn't too bad but after 4 days I was struggling a bit - although I do impose additional rules on myself of trying to only eat Japanese food and not going to vegetarian restaurants because Phil eats meat. There are sushi places, had some fantastic Korean food, Mos Burger, tempura, conveyor belt sushi again, so yeah it was ok!
