  • In this video we take the historic, brand new inaugural flight from New York to the Faroe Islands onboard Atlantic Airways and their A320NEO in seat 1F. And we’re in the cockpit for landing. With low clouds down to a few hundred feet off the ground, it’s certainly an interesting one. Join us as we take the specially-timed bus from Manhattan to New York Stewart International Airport (SWF) for this flight. It’s located up in Newburgh, NY, about 90 minutes away. The airport sees little other service aside from a PLAY flight to Reykjavik and the occasional Allegiant flight domestically. We’ll show you the takeoff on a beautiful day out of Stewart; the service and menu onboard including a special treat for us on the inaugural flight; you can hear the Captain crack a joke or two to the cabin; and we get glimpses of Canada and East Greenland too. Finally we land at Vágar Airport (FAE) in the Faroe Islands, the main gateway to the islands. Let us know if you’re planning to take this very unusual flight!

    I flew from CPH to the Faroe with Atlantic Airways in August 2018 and had the impression of a small but closely knit community airline. Faroese people are so few that maybe everyone from the islands knows someone in the crew when flying ☺️. Wonderful islands, hope they get the tourist hype they deserve!

      Hope they dont. How do people not understand that mass tourism coming to an island nation of 50,000 people is NOT a good thing in any sense of the word. Economically the faroes are doing fine, socially they are doing fine, they do not need mass tourism. Iceland has 6 times the population as the faroes, and in some areas it’s almost been ruined by mass tourism already.

    Lil bit of a hard landing but I'm still sooo envious of all your amazing cockpit experiences Gabriel! I actually had the great honor and fortune of being invited into the cockpit of a 2 year old A350-941 during my wife and my trip to Egypt this April. The Captain invited us into the cockpit at 41k feet as we flew over Athens Greece originating at CDG and CAI was our destination. It was so amazing! So I love watching you going into the cockpits.

      You want more of a positive landing when runway conditions are wet, this helps the plane to stick to the runway better, plus prevents hydroplaning.

    I live just about 15 miles north of SWF and have always enjoyed flying in and out of Stewart. It's a shame that so many airlines have dropped it over the last few years. What most people don't realize is that even if you're staying in NYC, the total time of getting to the airport, finding parking, going through security and customs (if needed), etc will not be any greater than if you're flying out of one of NYC major airports. It's just such a much easier and more relaxing experience. Because there are so few flights out of Stewart, you are much less likely to deal with flight delays (unless it's weather related). Long-term parking lot at Stewart is probably no more than 20 meters away from the terminal and always has lots of spots available.

    • @fahrbierde
      @fahrbierde Před 10 měsíci +3

      I love SWF - and even more since I can go home to Germany using PLAY. But we should not attract too many people up here, otherwise we end up with another congested New York Airport. Just enough to keep a few airlines in the air. 😊 I heard Eurowings from Frankfurt will also give SWF a try this fall...

    • @drdewott9154
      @drdewott9154 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Stewart could be interesting for letting a few newer, perhaps more niche airlines access the big apple, in particular from Europe. But if they wanna succeed with that, they definitely need better transit connections to NYC. The bus between the airport and the city isn't even marked, and the ticket price of 25 dollars one way, even without the additional taxes, is enough to scare away many european tourists. Like I'd say if that airport shall succeed it needs better bus service with better signage, and a lower price, probably around 15-20 USD w. taxes included.

    I've been there in the summer of 2020. BLL-FAE and back on Atlantic Airways in good weather during daytime. You get to see some oil and gas platforms while crossing the North Sea. If the weather permits during approach then you can see those spectacular rocks with the steep slope and the green vegetation cover rising out of the sea. The islands are a paradise for nature lovers and have all kinds of tunnels on their roads including probably the world's first underwater roundabout where three highways join from various islands. It only opened recently. FAE is one of the smallest airports I've been to, 1 small belt for arrival, 2 gates for departure

I've seen some of the pilots here on CZcams say that you really don't want to float it when the runway's wet, so I'm guessing they wanted to get the plane down firmly. But, that looked a bit rough.

      Same here! I identify with your comment! Flying every weekends the A320 (all variants of the bird) in my sim'. What you've said is very true: wet runway = risks of aquaplaning so you have to land firmly. One other thing you don't want here in EKVG (Vagar): eat runway.
      Pretty short runway = better to land on the marks or even before them! Better have a kinda rough touchdown like in this video than to float over runway for meters.
      Bravo Gabriel, your cockpit video has captured more than what I wanted to hear and see, as a virtual pilot! Not to mention your quick but very informative interview of the flying crew! We need more of this :D ! Congrats, and keep the great work! 👌

      You know, there’s “upstate” and there’s “UPSTATE”. It’s not really a geographical boundary. Easiest way to describe it to compare it to Jersey. If you go into a place in Jersey and they’re playing country music and have NASCAR memorabilia, it’s South Jersey. Stewart is “upstate”, not “UPSTATE”.
      You enjoy JFK? Ok, next time I have to pick up a family member there I’ll send you 😂😂😂. I knew what you mean though, staying at the TWA hotel is definitely on my bucket list and I want the room that opens onto the taxiways.

      @@JimAllen-Persona The airport itself is cool... getting there, or getting away is the real headache, although with East Side Access now complete, rail is now a bit simpler and quicker.

    Great report! Stewart is in my backyard so, while I usually fly from Newark, any service to Stewart is welcome news. Btw, you’re right about “upstate.” I grew up in NYC, and anything north of the Bronx was “upstate!” 😂 My only hesitation about the Faroe Islands is that you probably need to be young and fit to maximize the experience. I am neither young nor fit.
    Just need to add that Stewart no longer sees much passenger service, but it is a cargo base and military base for both the National Guard and the Marines. And quite a lot of general aviation. So the passenger terminal may be dead, but the airport has a lot of activity.

      New Yorkers love to argue about what is upstate and what isn't. It's a matter of opinion I guess. But Stewart Airport definitely isn't in the Catskills, like he said. Either way, I'm taking advantage of the opportunity. Can't wait.

    Why does it fly from Stewart? Is it because of max distance of the a320 or because it's a cheaper airport?

    I wonder how you get cockpit access? Seems with most U.S. airlines cockpit access is quite restrictive. Just curious!

    • @Flightradar24DotCom
      @Flightradar24DotCom  Před 10 měsíci +6

      Yeah the US airlines simply won't do it. And you can't go in there while in US airspace at all, on any airline, per FAA rules. But other airlines, mostly European ones, are open to discussion. They're careful about it, and it takes a lot of time to set up, but they can see I have a good track record and I use the access to create things that show another very interesting side of their airline's operation. So, it's a process basically!

    • @shollie
      @shollie Před 9 měsíci

      European airlines are actually really chill about it. I flew with a big German airline (not naming the actual airline to not get them in trouble) a couple of weeks ago and after simply asking the crew if I can have a look, they allowed me to spend 10 minutes on the jump seat mid fly. Amazing experience indeed!

    For those who wish to learn about the Faroe Islands and their people, research ‘The Grind Faroe islands’.
    Look at the photographs, but more importantly look at the video recordings.
    It’s unlikely you’ll ever want to visit the islands because of unnecessary cruelty which the islanders are responsible for.

    As for the Faroese words you noticed, it might come as a surprise but the language is related, English is a distant cousin that grew lazy with time and dropped off a lot of letters from written words, and also changed how words are pronounced completely. English is a Germanic language, just like Faroese, other Nordic languages, German and Dutch. But words for cigarette for example is so alike because it is a modern invention, and most countries probably used the same word but with different spelling.
