After few years on Skillshare I decided to cancel my subscription few months ago as they basically doubled the price of it (I went from about 93 Euros/year to 163 Euros/year). Knowing that they will pay less to teachers for the same quality content is disheartening cause we know the amount of hours and dedication behind each class. I think you should also consider selling your courses in your own website as a way to cut third party fees alongside with new websites like Udemy as you mentioned. Would love to see you on Domestika! The audience you would be able to reach (specially Latin people like myself) would for sure increase traffic in your website and social medias bringing more work opportunities. I would totally buy any of your courses on Domestika. 😊
Thanks for your insight, Bia. I know it must seem like a crazy jump, especially since we're all actually trying to cut back our expenses these days. I hope that I didn't imply that Skillshare is charging more, therefore earning more, and at the same time giving less to us teachers. I don't know for certain but I think they are actually seeing slower or negative growth and charging more to stay profitable, and we are seeing reductions in payouts in step with the overall financial climate. I would like to consider Domestika as a possible new platform for sure. Who are your favourite teachers there?
@@TomFroese Yes, it did seemed a lot in such short time. The reason why I decided to migrate to Domestika (i purchased around 200 courses mostly after I decided not to continue on Skillshare, and yes I know it costed me more than a year subscription on Skillshare) is once I paid the courses are mine forever. Skillshare will only allow us to watch the classes as long as we are subscribers. Plus many Skillshare teachers are just starting out not every class imo meet the minimum standards. At Domestika every class is curated so the quality of the sound, image, content is 100%. I am really very much in love with Domestika! My favorite teachers are so many! From Carles Marsal (wizard on Mat Painting - i purchased all of his in depth classes after his courses on Domestika directly from his website), to Adolfo Serra and Puno (both illustrators). There are so many great teachers at Domestika that is hard to name just a few. I really hope soon you will be one of those! 💕
Even though I personally prefer using Skillshare over Domestika I too feel that you would be such a great fit for Domestika - alongside Felix Scheinberger and Adolfo Serra, which are my favourite teachers on Domestika:)! You have so much great knowledge to offer - I will be following your journey here on CZcams and on your wonderful podcast!
I prefer Domestika. Anything that is subscription based always makes me anxious that if I'm not using it - i'm wasting money. With Domestika I like that i'm paying for just want I need and have time for.
Good ideas about the Venn diagrams. As to Skillshare or Udemy, they are both a ripoff. As you mentioned, Skillshare has drastically squeezed teacher pay while Udemy has been doing this for quite a while.
Thanks, Drew. I wouldn’t say that SK is a ripoff just yet, but it’s definitely not the gravy train it was in previous years. We all are going to have to work harder to earn the same level of $$$ we got used to earning, and probably, we won’t earn quite as much even if we do sweat it. But I still earn enough to live off of. So until I know a better platform, I’m sticking with it. What was your experience with these platforms?
Glad they help, Daksha! I wonder how you, as a Skillshare student, think about what I'm saying (speaking mostly to teachers). Or does this give you more insight as someone who wants to teach?
Thanks for the great insights ❤ I have been thinking about making a skillshare class for a long time. I have lot of ideas and online teaching experience. But I am afraid that I’m not a native English speaker and I don’t have a lot of followers on social media. Do you think it’s still worth a shot for a beginner?
As an artist I really don’t recommend you domestika. They pay the teachers quite badly and they will have all the rights on your content, also, they have an exclusivity clause in their contract. They basically don’t want you to teach anywhere else. I was approached by them and after reading the contract decided against it.
Well then, that is news to me. Thanks Riso. I recently applied as a teacher to Domestika (because Skillshare earnings are down 40-70% for all teachers) and they never replied. Now it makes sense that they never replied. I made a big point in my application about how I was a top teacher on SK etc. Haha!
@@TomFroese I’m glad it helps. They allow some teachers (Victoria Calderon for example) to have classes in skillshare, but ask them to stop posting there. I have many friends who have courses in domestika and most of them aren’t happy with the balance between income and the amount of time you have to invest in the forum. Courses sell at about 9€ each, teachers get ten percent, so less than a euro per person, which isn’t great. But what they don’t tell you when chatting about the opportunity is that they also sell courses as bundles, so many times you are making 0.50 cents. Say that you made a wonderful job at inspiring them to paint and post on the forum, then you are basically working for free. Also, you need to keep the form going even when you realise is a bad deal, because it is in the contract. And you can’t take that content elsewhere because they own it.

I have skillshare, but prefer domestika's model. I prefer to own my classes also.

Good to know, Tedd! Thank you.
Pumped for your podcast, Tom!
Thanks, Rosalie! :)
Thanks for the great insights!
You bet!
Thankyou. This information is very helpful.
You’re welcome!

Skillshare is always looking for people who can teach to non-English speaking audiences. It’s definitely worth a try!
