I've been trying to learn a bit of Cantonese ever since I worked in Haikou many years ago and the managerial meetings were in Cantonese. The 汉字 really help with the meaning, although it seems sometimes different words are used in Cantonese than in Mandarin or their grammatical use is sometimes a bit different.

Please answer me! I've been learning Vietnamese for almost 3 years. I also started Mandarin a couple of months ago. I really wanted to learn Cantonese, but I run into some serious problems. I learn languages mainly following the Comprehensible Input hypothesis. Basically, reading things, watching things, mining sentences and ANKI. One of the main reasons I wanted to learn is because in Brazil I grew up watching Hong Kong Kung fu movies. But as far as I know thee is no Cantonese movie subtitled in proper CFANTONESE but in Putonghua. Let alone transcripts or screenplays form movies like Police Story in actual Cantonese. And I was also told there are no books in ACTUAL Cantonese (like Frankenstein, or Guns Germs and Steel, or a history of China or HK) but only in Putonghua as well. Is that so? No books (not made for learners, actual books for natives), no Jackie Chan movies subs and transcripts? Is there news articles in Cantonese? How to find actual sentences form actual Cantonese rom interesting content made for natives to put on ANKI? I'm really disappointed I can't learn Cantonese. Because that's the way I learn. What's the fun of learning Cantonese if I can't earn form my favorite action movie ever (above mentioned Police Story) and Chungkin Express? Is there a way out of this?
Hello Johnny. Thanks for your comment. Actually, the subtitles of most Hong Kong movies are in the Written form of Chinese, not Putonghua. Mandarin and Written Cantonese share the same characters of the Chinese language. I understand it will be a big trouble for lots of Cantonese learners. So I set up a course on learning Chinese characters in Cantonese pronunciation. We learn the written form of Cantonese and also the oral way of Cantonese at the same time. @@JohnnyLynnLee I guess you are confused about the difference between Cantonese and Mandarin. Cantonese written form uses the same words and grammar as Mandarin but with different pronunciations. But Cantonese tends to be an oral language. Oral Cantonese has some unique words and different grammar but not all of them are different. Some words are the same characters no matter in Cantonese or Mandarin but different pronunciations, like people, which is still 人 but jan4 in Cantonese and ren2 in Mandarin. Movies, songs, and news are published to the public so they use written form. There are still some Cantonese subtitles but it is not easy to be found. I am sorting some subtitles lately too. If you are interested in it, you can book a lesson with me. Some students like to watch Stephen Chow's movies. And in some of my livestream, we watched some movie clips in Cantonese oral too. I'd suggest the videos about the differences but Stuart Jay Raj, here on CZcams. Even from simple sentences like "I'm hungry" Mandarin speakers and Cantonese speakers would word it in a different way. Cantonese would use the word "belly". Much like Japanese, which I know, by the way. As I've said, I've been studying Vietnamese for 3 years. And Vietnamese, despite being greatly different, not only in prounuciaiton but in the way they structure their sentences and choice of words seem more cmolsely related to Cantonese than Mandarin (another reason I wanna learn it). I never took a class for any language I speak (that includes English, I'm Brazilian, never been to and English speaking country ever and never took classes). So, Japanese, for instance, I learned basically watching anime. So learning Cantonese without watching the HK Jackie Chan movies would be like learning Japanese without Manga and Anime. One of the main reasons I gave it up, sadly. I wanna put the Policy Story dialogues (and if there was, but that is hard. the entire screenplay) as cards in my ANKI and watch it hundreds of times in an arch of maybe 2 years? While learning from other sources. If that is TRULY the case not being able to mine sentences from Police Story to learn Cantonese is such a waste! It would be something akin to not being able to learn Japanese from Dragon Ball.
