The first explosion wasn't only caused by one mine. They placed a mine next to a sunken ship full of explosives...Great!

It was too big to be a depth charge . Depth charges don't stay in the water either, they explode after a predetermined depth .
That was INTENSE
They accidently set off a ton of other old bombs, that was hidden in the mud under the bomb they found. That's why the explosion was so big.
The water turns right into water vapor.
Soon after this explosion, the spokesman for the French Ministry of Defence was quoted as saying "We surrender".
