  • A cheap 7-segment display built with cardboard, hot glue, JB weld, and poster board. Uses seven r130 type motors, L298 motor drivers and an Arduino.

    Very cool. So do you just drive the motors for a set amount of time to switch the digits segment?

      That's it. Each motor was powered for about 120ms sequentially to keep power requirements down. After the first scan, it went back through to make sure all the segments were firmly in place.

    Is there reason why the rotations happen in serial manner instead of parallel? Very fun concept.

      Maybe he is using a MUX so he doesn't use 7 pins. Usually that's the case with LED 7 segment displays, but the LEDs switch so fast that you can't see them, the motors are obviously slower than LEDs that's why you see the transitions. It also just looks cooler 😎

    Are the motors running all the time? It appears to be - an improvement would be to shut them off except when changing the segments, otherwise it's going to draw a lot more power than necessary and wear out a lot quicker.
