    On the splined mitre joint, the spline has the grain running with the joint, it should run perpendicular, any flex in the joint like it’s shown and the spline will snap along the grain

      @@pazirandeh clamping is not required, holding the pieces to be glued close together is (try it!) Totally agree with OP on the grain direction of the spline, guess it's the difference between doing something properly and making it look "good" like the craftsmen do it indeed...

    The first technique doesn't seem very strong. It relies 100% on the screws to carry the load.
    I like the joinery where the wood supports the load and the fasteners are additional support.

      I believe the shear value of the 4 screws to be between
      4,000 and 20,000 psi depending upon screw diameter.

      When I was younger I thought drywall screws were the standard construction screw. I put every project and repair together with drywall screws. I know now that quality and purpose appropriate fasteners are important, safe, and reliable. For general purposes I like GRK and Spax. I also tend to over build rather than under build.

      Those are all purpose wood screws. The thread on a drywall screw is different and the shaft is much thinner.

    • @raymondbunkofske4702
      @raymondbunkofske4702 Před rokem +1

      They sure look like drywall screws for metal studs. Wood screws have a coarser and deeper thread and a thicker body. Even drywall screws or wooden studs have a very different threading. I’ve been building furniture for 50 years. I would never use screws like that.

    Use "black" self-tapping screws, and even those intended for metal - do not respect yourself. They stick worse in a tree due to frequent carving, burst and rust.
