thanks for another great video! a cool tip for those who don't own a lightbox is you can use your ipad as a lightbox by turning the brightness up and deactivating the touchscreen using guided access mode. it's a little annoying but if you cant afford or have no place to store a lightbox it works!

My husband and I wanted to give the live action series a fair shot, so we got half way through, but I completely agree with you, too much telling than showing and not enough character development and relationship building. On top of that, them pulling together just weird Combo of story arcs into one episode, which gave a weird clunky pacing.
The production and costume design was very on point, though... so 🤷♀️
I get where they're coming from mashing episodes together and creating a new storyline with tidbits of the original (One Piece has 1096 episodes and they condensed 45 episodes into 8 LA ones). But my life OMASHU! That was a car crash! I don't think the inventor or Jet knew who Bumi was in the cartoon.
It's so ironic that the original and live action first season has a similar run time and yet the animated version managed to tell more story and build out the characters better :\

I agree! I knew they'd have to have some stories overlap and I actually liked how they introduced Jet but the majority of the episode felt pretty clunky afterwards
i've honestly trying my best to avoid the live action considering the actor who plays sokka allegedly faked being indigenous 😭 i heard from lot of original atla fans that the live action isn't that good anyways so i'm okay with not seeing it for now lol

am disabled and live with my parents and had my dad buy me my first alcohol marker set for Christmas and am having trouble with understanding them so am watching a ton of videos and happy to hear you giving tips on the video it's a huge help along with the other videos I've seen i think am starting to understand how they work also probably not a popular opinion but i enjoyed the netflix live action version with my toddler nephew seeing him getting excited at the action scenes geeked me out it was so adorable

15:10 Yes, I agree! I also have watched only the first episode and have mixed feelings. Everything felt like it was going too fast, which like you said did not give enough time to build up the characters and some of the dialogue was a little weird and overall the whole episode just seemed off. I think that the best thing about this version is the spectacle and the aesthetic of the worldbuilding, which personally, I think is what may have hooked most people in other than the fact that it is such beloved and nostalgic tv series, and therefore made it result underwhelming when I finally came out. It seemed like they were drawing out the anticipation little too much, in my opinion. Personally, I am still interested to continue the series but just not excited as I wished I was. Also, Toph is my favourite character! Your art style is so beautiful, I really love your fanart of her! :))
Yes totally! The live action seemed more invested in how it looked vs how they developed the characters which is what the heart of Avatar is and so it just fell flat :\

I agree that the first episode was really not good 💀💀💀 my best friend actually really loves the live action and is excited for a second season so I watched it with her (her second viewing) and so tried a lot harder to like aspects of it and I do think it gets better as the actors find their footing and the story diverges more from the source material and takes all the existing content we have and tells it to us in a new way I think that's always the best way to do adaptions if you're going to do them-don't change or take away or add elements, just rearrange what's already there to fit the medium and pacing. But in the end it was just mid imo. The costume design and set design is BEAUTIFUL and my favorite part. And the scene with Zuko and Iroh did make me cry brutally like it was very well done and emotional. And I personally really liked Sokka and Suki's actors out of everyone they really won me over but I also think the way their romance was handled was lowkey so creepy like why was Suki like a repressed stalker 💀💀💀 idk but anyway I did genuinely laugh at multiple Sokka scenes after the first episode they leaned more into his humor and I really feel like the actor captured Sokka in a more toned down live action way that I thought was pretty good and endearing. Like I won't lie I can't stop quoting "is that a frog or a froggy thing!?" But yeah other than those positives I don't think we needed the show at all.. the acting is barely above average at most parts and at some TERRIBLE.. the pacing and writing is constantly all over the place and there are lots of little details that bother the hell out of me like Aang flying around in the first episode like WHY HAVE THE GLIDER IF HE CAN DO THAT but then he NEVER does it again for the rest of the season. And Azula and Mai and Ty Lee were huge disappointments imo but maybe they'll do better in a second season idk. Basically I agree that we need to stop acting like live action is the pinnacle of visual media, animation is its own pillar of art that doesn't need to achieve live action, it's perfectly beautiful and meaningful and important on its OWN and we don't need everything remade

I think most of the casting was quite good but the script was terrible which ended up being a domino effect of a lot of what didn't work for me with the live action version.
The actors seem so endearing in interviews and so I'm happy for them that they got renewed for a second and third season and hopefully the series can improve from there

i actually like the live action, which is unexpected, it isn't perfect by any means but i was able to connect and the visuals are so pretty i loved them. the animation will always be the best but they didn't embarrass it

I got into Avatar by accident really; I was bored and wanted to watch something new so I stumbled onto the cartoon and the rest is history...I seriously love the show. The live action was good, but not great for me; not every animation needs a live action. Did you hear they maybe doing a live action of Naruto? 😒
The pacing for the show was too fast and Aang lost that childlike personality from the animation; the bending was cool and I loved the characters who portrayed Iroh and Zuko.
There's much I could say about it, but it'll be too long; like I mentioned, it was good, but not great. The idea is not to compare it to the original because it's not; although it's hard not to, but for me it would have been better to animate The Promise and The Search. Maybe that's what they'll do for the animated film coming out next year.

I love your take on this, i'm glad it randomly popped up in my recommended. I agree with you on the live action, there was no need for it. I watched Avatar last year (only took me 14 yrs to finish watching after seeing 1 episode in our anime club at uni) and it was the best thing I ever seen in western cartoons. I was looking forward to the LA- it had some good parts but it mostly fell flat. I just paid attention to the environment. To me King Bumi was the only good character, he was the only one true to the cartoon, the others personalities were too similar that the only way to tell them apart were their clothes.
I will not be watching the live action. NOPE 👎 I HAVE ZERO INTEREST.

The thing about the need for animated works to be live action is the weirdos who think that nothing is considered worth watching unless it's live action. The way the entertainment stigmatized animation as "just for kids" is a crime.

I don’t think people are taking into consideration that Aang is going to grow so they can’t like make the story as long as we want because he will continue getting older so I feel they want to get as much done as possible for he grows to much just my opinion on the progression of atla on the new series

They did our girl Katara so dirty in the new version 😭 she completely lost all her personality and drive - I blame the writers for most of the problems with the live action
