Who was LBJ Crony Billie Sol Estes?

  • In the world of politics, alliances can be crucial to success. And in the 1960s, few alliances were as powerful as that between President Lyndon B. Johnson and his crony, Billie Sol Estes. But who was Billie Sol Estes, and what did he do that made him such a key figure in Johnson's inner circle? Estes was a self-made millionaire who rose to prominence in the 1950s and 60s. He made his fortune in the cotton industry, but his success was marred by a series of scandals that would eventually bring him down. Estes was accused of numerous crimes, including fraud, bribery, and even murder.
    Despite his checkered past, Estes remained close to President Johnson throughout his time in office. The two men had a long-standing relationship that went back to Johnson's days in the Senate. Johnson was known for his ability to cultivate relationships with powerful businessmen and politicians, and Estes was no exception.
    Estes was a master of the political game, using his wealth and influence to curry favor with those in power. He was instrumental in helping Johnson win the presidency in 1960, and he continued to play a key role in Johnson's administration throughout the 1960s.

    In 1964, my dad voted for Billie Sol Estes as a write-in candidate, rather than vote for Lyndon Johnson. He figured, what the Hell, why not elect a real criminal. My dad was from Texas and knew all about Johnson. My parents told me about the 1948 election treachery in 1962. In the summer of 1965, my mom and I had dinner at the Petroleum Club in Houston, Texas. We were guests of oil man John Orgain. John married an old friend of my parents, Marvel Weeks. In the decades since then, I have often wondered how many of the men mentioned in this episode, and others about LBJ, were sitting in the room that night.

This experience started me thinking about the non reality of news. He was portrayed as a villain in our local West Texas stations from Abilene, on to Lubbock, and to Midland/ Odessa, yet I could see genuine respect for Billie Sol in the young coeds face as she told me about his family. This is one of the best programs I've seen from you two. That is quite a compliment from me because I've watched almost all your YT uploads. Great job showing how Billie Sol Estes got screwed and who did it. He was no scumbag gofer for LBJ, was told to keep quiet and he would be taken care of. His friends and associates were gotten rid of and he got stuck in Leavenworth on top of all the loss of hundreds of millions. LBJ was the worst POS trash pervert pig to ever enter the White House. And that's being kind.... BSE was a jewel that JLB ended up owning, or at least controlling. And Vietnam... he was the reason we lost 60,000 men and women over there. Not one death was necessary. He wanted to be POTUS so much he let the Chiefs of Staff "have your little war" after he got into the seat in the Oval Office. JFK did send about 1,000 "advisors" to SVN, but they were to leave and we were not to get involved. His VP, after the murder of JFK provoked the North Viet Nam into attacking U.S. Navy Destroyers. The U.S. ships were less than 8 miles from the shore, well inside the 12 mile limit. On and on LBJ continued until.... well, LBJ caused the death of thousands of Americans, North and South Vietnamese people were murdered, tortured or maimed because LBJ wanted to be Boss. How many Billie Sol Estes of varying incomes were victims of this pig?

    Thanks guys, your expo connects a lot of dots. I still am in search for the Breeze expo that I had and lost…the Breeze family were terrified rightfully by the government to never put it out again. I talked to Breeze’ widow some 15 years ago, she’s probably passed on by now, and wouldn’t sell or give a copy out to me. That camera was next to Zurgruda’s and in color. Breeze got away and went to DC to film, in color, the funeral. One of the big dot connection is Kennedy working with Ike on his Vietnam-French problem in the 1950’s. Both different parties, they realized the high possibility of Vietnam turning into another Korea, thus Ike’ commencement speech. Kennedy meet with Hochi Minn and proposed our form of government and found the leader interested. This diplomacy is why Kennedy was moving our troops out, and infuriated the Rockefeller gang of banker thugs, and by the way got Kennedy’s brains blown all over the Dallas streets. Kennedy wasn’t soft on communism as f____ing Hoover professed, and according to Kennedy aids, he wasn’t the fillandera that queer-boy made him out to be, having children changed him, and with the PT 109 four ruptured vertebrae’s Kennedy would had severe pain in proforming sex. This is why the truth journalists like Kilgallen had to go. After Trump’s release of JFK documents the lineup of federal agents opening up on what happened on that November day, like G Gordon Liddy’ murdering Tibet’s, and that the drunken nite before party started with a, no checks and balances, CIA swearing in, to all agencies, and yes I belief the guy leaning against the building picture, was ‘golden boy’ George H, why he quickly created an alibi. But that problem is just another example of our phony ‘nation building’. Our problems have multiplied since then and the JFK murder shows the US blossoming of these ‘last days’ corruption.

    I had an uncle who was kinda like Billie Sol, just in a much smaller way... he ran a small Western Auto store in a tiny rural town on the southern East Coast, and he lived like an absolute king in that town, biggest house in town, new Cadillac for the wife every other year, new pickups or Lincoln Continentals for himself, new sports cars for his kids, new appliances in the house, and when one went out, say the washing machine died, he'd send the boys down to the store and just grab one off the sales floor and bring it back and install it in the house... built a new house for his mother in the backyard on the corner of his property for her to live in til she passed away, they owned several other rent houses around town that they kept up and rented out, etc. He did all this off the income of one dinky Western Auto store in a tiny dirt poor rural town in a poor Southern state... It wasn't until after he passed away suddenly that they found out how... he had TWO sets of books-- one for the bankers that "looked good" and everything in it made the business look positively glowing, and another set of books that told the real story... how he was borrowing from Peter to pay Paul and keeping a fee off both, so to speak, which was how he was REALLY financing their high lifestyle (which incidentally they never failed to rub our noses in it, given that his wife's parents, my grandparents, were just small Texas farmers and ranchers, along with my Dad and me). Anyway, after his sudden passing, it all came crashing down-- none of his kids nor his wife, my aunt, had the business acumen to keep the schemes going, and keep the juggling act up so they could maintain their lifestyle... within a year or so they'd lost virtually everything and had creditors and bankers and lawyers knocking on every door and window... My aunt even jumped up and came racing back to Texas and married some dude she hardly knew within hours of landing back in Texas just to change her name and get out from under it all. Her two boys fought like cats and dogs and didn't have sense to come in out of the rain, and so they fumbled the business away and couldn't keep up the juggling act with the books. Her daughter had gotten married in a HUGE ostentatious wedding that my uncle bragged had cost $25,000 back in the late 70's, which was BIG money then (you could buy a house for that back then) and he'd even invited Senator Strom Thurmond to the wedding (though he didn't attend) and I remember my Grandparents were not at all complimentary on wasting that much money on essentially a "big show for the rich folks". We attended and wished my cousin well but didn't stay long before we drove back to Texas. My aunt used to rub her mother's nose in their wealth, "You work all year for a $2.98 dress" while she had a diamond ring on every finger and pearls and closets full of fine clothes and a big southern mansion full of fancy stuff... Needless to say my grandparents weren't impressed.
    Well, my cousin and her husband, who according to my uncle hung the moon and was going to set the world on fire, were living the life of Riley too... he worked for a cafeteria company as an sales accounts guy, and was making big bucks or so it seemed-- kept my cousin in a fine brick home in an upscale neighborhood, they had a maid, a huge new RV in the driveway beside the big boat they had, kids in private school and everything they could ever want, new BMW's etc. Well, until the company started wondering where some of their money had went, and started investigating, and then started wondering how a mid-level sales guy could afford all this fine stuff, and started digging and investigating and found out that there was a lot of phony billing going on-- bills for nonexistent products and services were being sent to companies for stuff they'd never received, like hospitals and other businesses and institutions, and their accounts payable people were sending checks to a fictitious PO Box he'd taken out... he was collecting the money, cashing the checks, and shredding the bills, plus skimming off the company as well, which is how they caught him. He ended up in the federal joint for about 15 years or so, and of course it was a big come down for my cousin and his spoiled kids after they lost everything, a used Chevy instead of new Beemers, public school instead of private, and my cousin having to take a menial job to put food on the table... Course the apple don't fall far from the tree-- my aunt cozied up to my grandmother (who said she was 'finally getting her daughter back" after all those years apart) and then convinced her to give her power of attorney over her affairs as she was getting older, and then she tried to take everything over and throw my grandmother into a nursing home, so she could make off with everything she had and sell it. I managed to take my grandmother out to lunch, since she had her cloistered in her home, but my aunt went on a riverboat cruise with her new husband and left my grandmother in the care of a maid while she was gone. Grandma had no idea that my aunt had closed all her business accounts in town, told my brother who was living with my grandmother he'd have to move because she was cutting the power off to the house, had a meeting with my Dad to which I was NOT invited and told him that we could keep farming the farm as long as we paid the bills and "sent her her half", which we basically farmed the place for my Grandmother, after all she owned the farms and we got paid a share of the crops for labor, and she paid the bills to put her own crops in and feed her cattle, so NO WAY that was going to happen as we weren't going into debt to grow crops and livestock only to have to "pay her her half" in the end. Grandma was shocked and amazed when I told her what all was going on, and I told her flat out, she was in her late 70's and if she wanted to retire and was okay with everything her daughter was doing, fine-- I was getting married and moving out of state at least temporarily anyway, though that could become permanent if I wasn't running her farms anymore. If she wanted to retire, so be it, but if not, if she didn't want to end up in the nursing home (since it was obvious they'd planned to shut her household down permanently by cutting off the power and everything) that she better get to a lawyer and rescind the power of attorney and put my Dad or me in charge of it, since we'd been running her business for her for decades anyway. She had me drive her to the lawyer that afternoon and he drew up the papers, and had her presented with them when she got back. Turns out my aunt had made off with my Grandmother's mom's jewelry, and all her business papers, and the fancy recliner they bought Grandma while she was "recuperating" at my aunt and her second husband's home, that Grandma bragged they "bought for her" had been paid for by a check out of her own checkbook on her own account... all without her knowledge or permission... She REALLY got hot about that!
    After being discovered and "outed" my aunt basically never spoke to my grandmother again... she would send a fancy spray of flowers to her every mother's day and a poinsettia at Christmas, usually with a sugary card, but she never apologized and never made amends with grandma before she died six years later. She never spoke to my Dad again either before he died in 2015. She considered me the devil himself since I upset the applecart of what she had planned. Grandma didn't leave her out, though, she gave her half the mineral rights on the farms and a building in town, which she refused to take the building-- she threw the deed back at the judge and he was shocked as he'd never had a refused bequest before, so he ended up researching the law and gave it to Dad. She COULD have walked into any real estate office, threw the deed on the desk and said, "Sell this for whatever you can get for it, don't call me again until you have a check for me" and left it at that, and just took the money. Instead Dad sold it for about 40 grand IIRC. Oh well her loss. Just stupid. Well, the old witch finally kicked out at about 85 years old a few months ago... she smoked like a chimney for decades and drank nothing but tea with that pink death powder stuff every day of her life, and she lived to a ripe old age, and the old buzzard's last act was to have herself planted beside the mother she wouldn't speak to for the last six years of her life...just crazy... but that's the sort of folks you have to deal with sometime...

Your relative’s schemes and traits were limited compared to those described in this segment. The “deals” these Texans made infected darn near 5 “degrees of freedom” of people around them!! Legg-Calve-Perthes (LEG-kahl-VAY-PER-tuz) disease is a childhood condition that occurs when blood supply to the ball part (femoral head) of the hip joint is temporarily interrupted and the bone begins to die.
    This weakened bone gradually breaks apart and can lose its round shape. The body eventually restores blood supply to the ball, and the ball heals. But if the ball is no longer round after it heals, it can cause pain and stiffness. The complete process of bone death, fracture and renewal can take several years.
    To keep the ball part of the joint as round as possible, doctors use a variety of treatments that keep it snug in the socket portion of the joint. The socket acts as a mold for the fragmented femoral head as it heals.

    • @peter_waldo3715
      @peter_waldo3715 Před rokem +1

      It is a problem affecting the growth center (the epiphysis) of the upper femur. Some think that mechanical trauma is the cause of the loss of circulation to it. If the ball separates from the top of the femur it is deformity with a person having a shorter leg and that side of the pelvis drops. They used to put kids in leg casts at that time, maybe.

    Yeah Billie Sol was probably the archetype for the character of JR Ewing on the TV show "Dallas" which started in 1979, at the beginning of the "greed is good" era of the 80's... Billie Sol was a business genius, but his deals were always on the gray edge of legality and complicated, and he almost always made a ton of money where a lot of guys failed, and that engendered a lot of jealousy and animosity towards him, plus his liberal Democratic politics of the time (being supportive of integration and other such social issues) along with his ostentatious lifestyle (having a limousine and driver, who took his kids to school and drove his wife and daughters on shopping trips to Dallas in the finest stores, and flying about in his private planes with his own private pilot, etc) didn't exactly endear him to those who were prone to jealousy. Billie Sol didn't just live the jet-set life, though, he gave back, bailing friends out of soured business deals or failed projects, putting Latino and black kids through college free of charge, etc. He liked to "spread the wealth" and "pay it forward" while still living a very pleasant lifestyle.

Nonetheless, outside of being tall, he was hairy. Fair skinned with black hair. Everywhere. All over his legs, arms, and face. When I 1st saw him, I assumed he must’ve been a senior, in need of a credit or something. Nope, he was my age. Currently, at the age of 39, I can only imagine how much older he appears. Very interesting how that works.

    Yeah the head of the local paper was a staunch member of the John Birch Society, which was supporting segregationist causes and policies at the time. Billie Sol ran for the school board, and when the local newspaper refused to sell him ad space (IIRC) Billie Sol just bought up another small newspaper in the area that was about out of business, and used his substantial funds to build it up as a competitor to the existing newspaper, and of course running his ads and stories and stuff that was not only uncomplimentary of the local John Birch society and segregationists, but also was a competitor to the local newspaper, so it basically created a vendetta by this newspaper man against Billie Sol, who then started digging for the "dirt" on Billie Sol, and he stumbled upon the fertiizer tank deal and managed to construe it as fraud and "break the story" which then started the investigations that led to Billie Sol's downfall...

      That isn't how it really happened. Estes didn't try to buy advertising space. He wanted the paper to formally endorse him. He offered them money donations in return. The paper declined and then the editor called him out on it in the paper. Estes then tried to burn the paper down but the fire didn't take. Then he bought the competing paper, selling subscriptions at a loss, to run the Independent out of business. This was a tactic he also used against other businesses that wouldn't work with him. The newsman didn't stumble across the story about the tanks. It was a solid lead based on farmers who had been bankrupted. It took time and effort to track down the paper records and decipher the scheme.
