NTNON: The Two Ninnies

  • "The Two Ninnies" comedy sketch from Not The Nine O'Clock News (BBC circa 1980), parody of the comedy series "The Two Ronnies". Mel Smith (Ronnie Barker) and Griff Rhys Jones (Ronnie Corbett).
"The Two Ronnies", a popular British comedy series of the time, is parodied to perfection here. The sketch includes the obligatory silly stage performance, in which the Ronnies "march up and down on the spot" in silly uniforms and recite risque double-entendres, in front of scantily clad female dancers.

Interesting to watch Ronnie Barker's interview on Wogan from 1983 where Terry put it to him about the material the Two Ronnies do, and he defended the material saying that it is up to the viewer whether they think the material is rude or not, that is the point of double entendre. I love this sketch and I think it sums up the change in the world of comedy from 1980 onwards. The old guard suddenly realise that their humour was becoming dated and the newer comedians were becoming so popular, you would expect the old guard to be defensive. I remember someone saying that Ronnie Corbett took it better than Barker. Corbett was always a stand up comedian, whilst Barker was always a comedy actor.

This was explained by Richard Curtis in a documentary recently, saying they did it as a reaction to the hassle they were getting from Ronnie Barker slagging them off every way he could when they started getting very popular. This was an hilarious way to say "up yours!" to them, or at least RB as he was quite scheming against them, apparently. A political victory I think; well done lads.

The ironic thing is about this time Ronnie Barker had been slagging NTNON as being crude so they did this sketch to show that the Two Ronnies were no better. The difference is Ronnie Barker always said that it was up to the audience to get whether his "spousands of thoonerisms" or the double entendres were actually dirty or not whereas NTNON were open about it.

It's a strange dichotomy that I suffer with too, I fairly adore Ronnie Barker's comic acting - 'Open All Hours' (orig.) and 'Porridge' being up there in the top-25 of my all time favourites. On the one hand I appreciate that the old guard were indeed under attack and their uppitiness at the way in which the 'alternative' comedians were behaving - the problem was, that for the old schoolers, the fact that Mayall / Elton / Edmonson / Smith / Jones / Atkinson / Fry & Laurie / French & Saunders / Richardson, Allen, Sayle, Planer etc were not only merciless but absolutely f***** hilarious with it. The 6 parter-genius that was 'Filthy, Rich & Catflap' was so much worse when it came to the - almost - contempt the new folks felt for the old-guard - Ben Elton and Rik Mayall (as writers) just came right out and said it - "we are the future and you lot should stay in the past. And retire"
'F,R&C' not only named the 'variety' comedians without bothering with spousands of thoonerisms but they had their pictures in A1 posters hanging on the walls of the set (Richie Rich's Flat) and had Richie Rich fawning over the likes of Freddie Starr and Jimmy Tarbuck with Ade's Edwardo Catflappo character tearing them asunder (never mind that Nigel Planer played 'Ralph Filthy' who was a self confessed Liar, thief, alcoholic child-pornographer!). 'F,R&C' is some of the cruellest and laugh out loud funny material you could have to piss yourself to!
I love them all really and they can certainly co-exist in the comedy pantheon - room for both 'horny-pornothologists' and 'Scumbag College' ...

I watched The Two Ronnies as a child, but even then, was disturbed by the sexism, particularly from Barker, and in the weird, disturbing "The Worm that Turned". I always found it very worrying. But this sketch not only mocks and parodies it amazingly, but is also insanely hilarious! Strange to watch, because you'd never usually hear the Not The Nine O' Clock Newsers (my favourite program as a child!) utter childish words such as "wee wee" or "willy"! So funny... I could watch it dozens of times...
The sketch is written by the wonderful John Lloyd and brilliant Nigel Planer, and the song is written by Peter Brewis (who somewhat ironically wrote songs for The Two Ronnies)! All geniuses!

John Cleese, Michael Palin and Terry Jones used to give the Two Ronnies the stuff the rest of Monty Python turned down or they didn't even offer to them. I heard this went for most comedy writers in the 70s and 80s who had their own series. If there was anything left unused which could be re-worked into an obvious pun or smutty punchline but.couldn't be improved much beyond that, into the Two Ronnies pile it would go.
"Hey, I've come up with a play on "fork handles" and "four candles", set in a DIY shop. Can we use it in our show?"
"No, but it sounds ideal for the Two Ronnies."
"What about an edition of Mastermind where they answer the question before last? That might be one for Eric and Ernie."
"No, they did one a few years ago which fell a bit flat. Maybe the Two Ronnies will do your sketch."
Which is a pity really, because both Ronnies had been capable of so much more.

@@anonUKRonnie Barker wrote the Four Candles sketch. And that Mastermind one was written especially for their show.
This show did a funny parody, but there’s no need to drag everything the Two Ronnies ever did just because NTNOCN did :)

One of the reasons why the Two Ronnies were funnier and better remembered than NTNON, was because the Two Ronnies left a bit more to the imagination rather than being outright vulgar. The other factor was that the only real talent in NTNON was Atkinson, and to a lesser extent Langham, who was sacked after the first series. Whilst it might have seemed original at the time, there was little that was unique in the writing and the format of NTNON, it just added more vulgarity to what had gone before it and approached topical issues in an anti-establishment but politically correct way.

Langham was sacked because he was a prevert.

Atkinson is more than enough talent to carry any ensemble.

It was Ronnie Barker's fault that this song got made, he bad mouthed the Not the Nine O'Clock News team, slagging them off at a BBC function, calling them not real comedians, so he deserved this. Payback.

@@jpc2470 Yes, he did. He said it and meant it. John Lloyd was at the function and heard it.

I am not surprised. Comedians knock the previous comedians, and it is the easiest laugh in the world to copy/parody, no real skill in it. I'm a fan of both The Two Ronnies and NTNON. The above sketch was weak though and not their best. TWR had some real classics and great wordplay.
