1982 CB450 Valve Adjustment

- Valve adjustment procedure for a 1982 Honda Nighthawk 450 (CB450SC). This procedure is essentially the same for any engine using screw and jam nut type valve lash adjusters. This type of adjuster was common on Japanese morotcycles using overhead cams with rocker arms.
For the CB450SC, the lash values are below.
Intake: 0.08 - 0.12 mm (0.003 - 0.005 in)
Exhaust: 0.12 - 0.16 mm (0.005 - 0.006 in)
I prefer to adjust to the loose end of the spec because, in my experience, the valves tighten over time as the valve seat recesses into the cylinder head.

How much should the play be?
When checking to see if the valves are fully closed? Enough to feel. If the valves have become so tight that you cannot feel any play at all in either valve, you will need to remove the side cover and use the top dead center markings on the alternator rotor.
what is the torque of the valve cover
As mentioned in the video, it's just a valve cover; it only has to seal against splash, not against pressure so simply cinched down snugly is fine. I don't have torque values for it beyond that. I will say that when I took mine off it took almost no effort at all to remove the bolts, so you definitely do not need to crank down hard when putting it back on. Nice and snug is fine.

What are values for intake valves ?
They're listed in the video description (click "show more") but I'll add them here too. For the CB450SC, the lash values are: Intake: 0.08 - 0.12 mm (0.003 - 0.005 in); Exhaust: 0.12 - 0.16 mm (0.005 - 0.006 in)
Thankyou for quick reply..so i rotated to top dead center, did left side, now i will rotate 360degree (1 full turn) back to the T then do right side ?
