y'all...the story is PRECISELY about how creepy and wrong this is. This is the story about a woman whose obsession is "nurturing a kid into a genius".
Have you seen the film? That's a genuine question. I haven't seen it myself. The trailer appears to be portraying her as sympathetic rather than creepy.
Dan Phillips I’ve seen it. She’s supposed to be a woman spiraling into madness
@@dgphi You turn from sympathetic to creepy instantly when you abduct someone...
I saw the film. I want to try to give a nuanced assessment of it. In a way, the film is genuine art in the way that it tries to explore an idea and to see where it leads. There is some genuine honesty there, which I appreciated. It's not just an exercise in ideology. It was surprising in that sense. On balance though I would have to say that it is kind of sick. It is sick art.
Watched this film the other day, incredible acting by all involved. There is no paedophilia; there is no sexual/romantic relationship between the teacher and the child. Is it inappropriate? Yes, but she is purely about 'nurturing' his talent and trying to make sure that he doesn't fade away and become ignored in the society obsessed with technology and kids growing up too fast. Maggie Gyllenhaal was incredible as a woman descending into madness and none of her actions are at all encouraged or made to feel like they are supported or shown in a good light.
@@xamyyylolx I don't think you're cut out for movie critiques mate. Leave it to people like op.
@@xamyyylolx If she had children of her own to love and nurture, would she have kidnapped this child? She tells herself she is doing it for his own good, to “support his genius” but is she really just motivated by her need to love a child? Just wondering...
There was a point where she called the kid just to talk about her issues. The kid was going into the zone
she went from being kidnapped by the joker to kidnapping children
Actually... it would be worse if it was a sequel of the Secretary instead of Batman
Lol people saying it's disturbing or creepy. THAT'S THE POINT. She's sneaking off with someone else's kid ffs. The movie isn't trying to make out like it's ok to do that lolol grow a brain
I just think there's been so many jumpscare simulators in this era of cinema that any alternative form of unsettling storytelling is enough to perplex a lot of dumbass modern teens.
That Rad Guy what the??? Someone else says “grow a brain”?? Damn I thought I was the only one 😂
Imagine someone kidnapping you to develop your talent and be famous one day... No teacher does this.
I think that's the point... That she's so obsessed with 'nurturing his talent' that she does crazy unpleasant things
My students are bad as shit, I be afraid that they are going to kidnap me!!
A teacher with a severe lack of self fulfillment might.
This is common among teachers, they feel like they give and give, but they're always stuck in the same place while everyone else around them is moving on, so they start to feel like they're doing nothing with their lives.
This movie seems like it takes that to the extreme.
The Gyllenhaals are beyond talented. Jake's films include some of the most successful and iconic of the 21st Century. And then there's Maggie, whose roles consistently explore unprecedented dynamics of human perspective, motivation, and experience. Jake's a great artist, but I think even he would agree that Maggie is about what makes art GREAT.
My first wife was from Chicago, just like the Gylenhaals. . I learned my lesson. . .I should've just praised and admired her from afar too.
Agree! She is fantastic, I have loved her since I saw her in Secretary, a strange and wonderful film that shouldn't have worked, but with Maggie and James Spader it was great.
The ending just crushed me having just watched the movie.. Give this movie a chance if you're on the fence. Its heartwarming, yet unsettling and scary at times. However the ending makes you feel to the child and the warning his teacher stated about his talent not being appreciated. Damn near breaks you're heart..
This comment section is just people totally missing the point interspersed with people saying this is SUPPOSED to be "creepy," but they might just as well be shouting at a brick wall. It's a very frustrating read, so I wouldn't even bother.
'' Talent is so fragile it's so rare and our culture does everything to crush it'' ❤️
Jen V It was definitely meant to come across as creepy lol, the movie clearly did it’s job for you!
O.k.. . . that was creepy.
I just said out loud, "Well, that's creepy." Then I scrolled down to see what the rest of the internet thought. So glad to see this is the first comment. :)
She went from the secretary to a kindergarten teacher..
when she was crawling on the floor i still see the secretary so this creeped me out more than it should
LOL - hilarious - and that was a weird one too - Shades of gray was just a copycat of that one.
Does no one Pay attention to the fact that she just kidnaps the kid lol
I think that's the point of the film! Also, the trailer wouldn't want to give everything away, but it does feel like it's alluded to that she will be in big trouble
The fact that you point out the obvious plot point is moronic.
That you think it doesn't says far more about you than it does how this movie was produced...
I think she's been brilliant in everything she has ever done. Saying she went from The Secretary to the Kindergarten Teacher leaves out such a huge arc of her work. But there is something about the way she commits to an unstable character with humor and diligence that is so great its unnerving. hahahah She is awesome
I'm pretty sure we're SUPPOSED to find this trailer creepy and unsettling, so could everyone stop acting as if they are the only ones being creeped out by it? Thank you. What's next - people watching a trailer for a Christopher Nolan film and saying "OMG! Hans Zimmer did the music - and Michael Caine's in it?"
No its not creepy man
Maybe shes just a little obsessed and addicted to the child that she had an idea to just
kid...nap ... him ...
Aahhh well you know what your right maybe its a little creepy.
Technically creepy tho
iii'm pretty sure that's what they were going for. To take this relationship of perceived altruism from her perspective, and present it as something else.
If you reversed the sexes and made it about a male teacher kidnapping a female kindergartener to recite poetry you'd go to jail just for writing the script 😂😂
Yeah it seems like my tone wasn’t heard when I wrote it. This is full on creepy there’s no need to sugarcoat it.
Bonga Ndimeni I only say technically because there is no sexual themes thank god
And her character seems to be pushing for a good goal just in bad way
This movie was amazing. The end is very dark, made me cry tbh
Just saw the movie ...though the teacher is wrong in all way but last words of the boy after he is in the police car.. I have poem ...and no 1 listens just filled my heart..
Maggie is currently one of the greatest actresses out there. Always has a slight unhinged and edgy quality about her.
Watching this trailer gave me a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. She kidnaps that child and forces her own agenda on him.
And people complain that Hollywood pumps out mindless repetitive dribble... Good movies invoke discussion, question humanity and leave lasting impressions.
and remember the dad says, "I just want him to grow up like a normal kid." So he knows he might be special but doesn't want to push anything upon him.
Both the teacher and the father are pushing their own agendas on this boy. Her kidnapping him scares me shitless though.
Have you ever watched the movie prisoners? It's disturbing but loud in its artistry
Netflix is really producing some good material !!
Maggie Gyellenhall should get an academy award nomination for this. She is brilliant in this.
This is disturbing. really.
i think it’s supposed to be disturbing, idk why this is so shocking lol it’s a movie
Yes, the word "disturbing" is even used on purpose at some foreshadowing point during the movie
What's with all these "am I the only one finding this creepy?" comments? IT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF THE MOVIE. Jesus Christ.
Can't wait to see this ! Maggie is such an amazing actress !
This movie makes me so sad. You can tell she didn't want to hurt the boy but the world would never fully understand his talent either. It will be a forgotten part of him, just like the rest of Lisa.
Just to be clear this is a result of her own loss as a person, the obessions she has is merely just a reflection of how damaged of a person she is. What she did was most certainly alarming.
It's brilliantly told and acted... When he at the end holds her hand, it's almost like he is, in all his freakish wisdom, comforting the little girl deep inside of her that got lost in growing up...
Maggie was such an excellent actress in this film.
sad this is only on netflix, looks like a great performance by maggie, hope it gets the recognition it deserves without being in theatres
Grace try see if any film fests are showing it! i saw it at nziff last month, really good movie!
Netflix is just cranking them out huh
I‘m studying to become a kindergarten teacher. Title about my profession? Yeay!
2.35 min later 😕 oh nooooo....😰
Just finished watching this movie. Very disturbing and sick. I need to now watch a funny movie to wash my brain of this sickness.
If Maggie is as good as they say, it will be very sad that she will not get big awards or nominations, because, you know, a netflix film.
As a preschool teacher this makes me very intrigued to watch this...but also for the record not all early childhood teachers are like this most of us are normal ordinary people lol.
I feel bad for child actors as young as this who are in films with dark unsettling themes.
I doubt they really know the depth of it sometimes and honestly it's more a lesson on how it's bad so it's not really a negative impact. Children are a lot smarter than we think and they are able to distinguish between "playing" (acting) and reality. They know they're playing a part and this isn't real as well as the fact that the stuff happening isn't normal behavior and they should be aware of it.
Honey Croc there is something very wrong with your reply .... the first thing you say to the comment above is i doubt they know the depth of it etc etc ......... seriously???
Yeah... I always used to feel really bad for the kid in The Shining, but apparently he didn't know it was a horror movie until he saw it when he was 18. Kubrick tried to make sure he didn't know what the film was about, and keep him away from the stiff that would have terrified a 5 year old. I'd like to think that other directors do that for their child actors.
I have never been to kindergarten then go to first grade without knowing that country’s language and survived just fine.
My son never went to kinder, my daughter did. My son is an excellent student, my girl hates school, takes a lot to get her motivated.
Sick, very well done. At first I was upset that the ending was ambiguous, but now I appreciate it--did Jimmy's talent get lost? Would the teacher have eventually looked at him in a sexual manner, a surrogate spouse? What must her family have felt/done when realizing her crime? Why didn't Jimmy's father file charges against her the first time? What did her classroom aide think or do? What did the teacher think when she realized she was caught? Did Jimmy do any debriefing/counseling of any kind? I saw this many days ago, and I'm STILL thinking about it. I wasn't a Maggie Gyllenhall fan, but this movie made me strongly reconsider her. Again, really insidiously sick, very well done.
Clever, complicated and creepy. Excellent acting and a real story! Well done!
I love the casting of the little boy.
Dude this looks epic.
And creepy. But mostly epic.
You can watch the original on Amazon for $3.99 with subtitles. Interesting psychological thriller.
This is going to really crazy and really good...
Brilliant scenario, brilliant Maggie. The movie is very interesting. It is a real drama. There is no annoying kindergarten atmosphere. There's a lot to think about behind this story.
Looks amazing, I love Maggie Gyllenhaal
I’m a teacher and I find this sickening :( edit: some of you don’t seem to get my comment. OBVIOUSLY this is not a feel-good movie. I realize that.
I think you're supposed to. She doesn't just encourage his talent, she forces him to live out her wishes. After which she kidnaps him. All while ignoring his father, who actually wants what's best for him (which is to be a child).
Can i just say i did the biggest eyeroll when she cried after Jimmy said he loved the Kindergarten assistant. Jesus Christ...
I am not condoning her behavior. But she does make a legitimate point especially at the end of the movie "Whereas he stated I have a poem", later on in life he would realize that nobody would care and not give a shit. But what she did was no excuse, if she did that to my child she would be catching these hands.
The Gyllenhaal siblings are geniuses
As a teacher, I could hardly make it through the trailer. This is creepy. And so inappropriate. And it just screams blue pages. (We get newsletters each month that shame teachers that do bad enough things to make it onto the blue pages)
yeah, the point of the movie is that it's creepy. and inappropriate. congrats on your gross misinterpretation of the tone. are you really ignorant enough to think that a production company and its base of supporters would market this movie in SUPPORT of what's happening in it? maybe you should quit teaching...
mtilley08 ummmm I never said anything about them supporting it. And what does your assumption on what I think about a production company have to do with whether or not I should keep my job? I’m just saying that as a teacher, the premise of this is just creepy times 1000. Just like some parents can’t watch horror movies where children get possessed or hurt because it hits too close to home. Caring about kids too much to stomach watching something where they may be put in harms way, is an asset. Not something you should “quit being a teacher over”. It’s like telling a parent who doesn’t want to watch a kidnapping movie, that they shouldn’t be a parent.
congratulations janet, you're a human being with feelings. my god some of you are so dense. the whole point is to make you feel uncomfortable, it's a freaking movie. it's what film does.
One of the best movies of this year! People need to understand that art comes from different forms and we can't judge storytelling (at least done right). This movie dares to go to an extreme that literally pits you on a wall making you thinking what's right and what's wrong and the lines that are crossed. Giving me intense Lolita vibes without the romance involved, I think Maggie did an amazing job playing this bored uninspired mother on the verge of a midlife crisis that really makes you empathize instead of criticize. A must watch, but not for the closed minded.
This is seriously a good movie. Hooked from start to end.
A nice way to characterise nowadays people, always having a reason for what they want to do any idea that comes into their minds, no matter what is correct or not.
Gael Garcia Bernal.
The end.
"why are you calling me?"
Me: OMG that is so creepy!!!
Also me: Why does a five year old have a phone????
Omg, I feel in love with the little boy, he reminded me of my son... I felt really sad for him in the movie 😭 Just let a kid be a kid...
I need to give this movie a go later on Netflix Maggie is brilliant actress loved her in Sherrybaby
The amount of captain obvious people in these comments is astonishing
The eerieness is real. This one's *perfect* for Halloween!
the trailer looks great, Gyleenhaal performance seems superb.
i hope it will match up the original film, witch i highly, highly recommends everybody to watch.
This story is going past many boundaries. I don't think that is ok. A teacher is a teacher and a parent is a parent.
So she's out here snatching kids and not ONE teacher on the playground saw this !!!
You could see that based on a few seconds of footage wthout even seeing the film? You need to be solving murders - just like famed Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot!
In California you don't have to even snatch them, just walk out the front door!
I THINK IT WILL BE HER BEST MOVIE SCENSE " THE SECRETARY ". AAAAAAA' I LOVE THIS WOMAN! 😊
I don't know how I feel after watching this trailer
The secretary becomes a kindergarten teacher.
Maggie still looks goergous
Not really.... her face is weird.
Her face looks 30 yrs older than it should
MAGGIE Gyllenhaal is an amazing actor
Okay who else got soooo excited because Rosa Salazar was in this?
my thoughts during the trailer: wow it looks really good!!...wait a second...why is she kidnapping the boy????? is she MOLESTING him??!!
Wait a 5 year old has a cell phone & his teacher is calling him to take him out on a date?
Netflix got creepy AF😳😨
Oh my this looks beautiful😍😌✨👌
Gael is having another encounter with Mozart.
it does look kind of creepy but it seems like there's something in her past that this boy is reminding her of. The question is what is it
Reema Ameer there was one part on the trailer where she talks about how our culture destroys Talent 1:30 curious to see what happens in this movie.
Grace Elizabeth Edgin it seemed creepy to me but after I watched the movie I don’t think she’s a bad woman. I believe she helped the guy. Hear what he said at the ending of the movie.
Ruhm Glory she wants to help him but she trespasses boundaries!!! She gets obsessed with the kid’s talent
I love Maggie G...
Wow I luv her since The Secretary, she's brilliant
That was creepy.
Total creep vibe!!!
Gael💕
Creepy imagine if the teacher was a guy this would get a totally different feeling 🤔
EMONEY yeah there’s a movie about that...it’s called ”call me by your name”
lol
I still felt like this was the same level of creepy. Super wrong, no matter the gender.
Reema Ameer I know, but so often there are people saying things like, "if I man did this..." when a woman does something creepy and of course women should never be allowed to do something creepy either, but this is obviously not really a man or woman issue, it's just a problem across the board. (Kidnapping children, I mean.)
Don’t quite get the boys point of view after calling the cops but then comforted her and still wanted to share poetry at the end.. guess he appreciated her but knew the whole deal was wrong..
I'm not sure about the genre of this film(?), but the trailer is more creepy and suspenseful than most of the thrillers' we see nowadays.
Stealing kids is uhhhh not normal
Dakota Gibbons That’s the point of the trailer. It never suggests it’s normal.
wow... thanks captain obvious. i wish they would have made a movie about completely normal behavior, and i could spend an hour and a half watching someones completely average normal life. Because THATS the content i signed up for.
This is going to be one of those underrated movies
Super creepy. It gives a different feel, Maggie is such a talented actress.
Is it an Israeli movie remake ?
@Are you sure you've entered that name correctly? At least some real political facts
FACEPALM. Dude am talking about movies not political stuff. STICK TO THE SUBJECT.
I'd like to say that you shouldn't hate Israel because of the whole place itself. The majority of the citizens don't want conflict at all, so I don't think it would be fair to blame *everybody.* Blame the government for their wrongdoings, not the people.
Oh it looks great Im excited! Novel premise!
I can't believe I'm looking forward to a Netflix movie
Ok, this went from a teacher realizing a childs' potential more than their parents and simply wants them to shine......to, "Imma kindnap your kid and imprint on him so h-------um, you know, I---I don't wanna finish that sentence...…*shudder*……..
I got the impression his parents did know his capabilities but they wanted him to have a normal life.
This trailer shows way too much. Worried I didn't turn it off in time to get everything I could have when watching the actual film.
Davida21 I feel like it could be one of those films that shows you everything, but really it's nothing. An illusion of what's to come.
sososohaunted fair but given the way trailers are made these days I think that might be rather optimistic. I would have loved a trailer just showing us the conflict between her and the parents and stopping right before the kidnapping.
Davida21 I see your point, but Gyllenhaal has rarely chosen a movie or been in a movie that was everything it appeared.
sososohaunted agreed! I think you're taking this as an assault to the film which it is absolutely not. She has no control over how the trailer is cut so while the script might be unexpected that doesn't mean the trailer isn't showing too much.
I will absolutely watch this film and it will most likely be fantastic! I am merely saying that while the trailer might not show every twist and turn, I personally feel like it could have shown one twist less than it did.
Davida21 I think you've misinterpreted my tone. I didn't feel attacked. I just offered a differing opinion and based it on her past work.
"... But she's ugly, right?"
"Errr... no, not really. It's the kindergarten teacher Maggie Gyllenhaal."
"Niccce!"
Wow, Maggie never ages, she’s gorgeous!!! I became boxxy software user and can’t stop watching movies lol The service is for FREE, guys, can u imagine?!
That was so weird and creepy. I don't think I want to sit through a film where an adult obsesses over a 5-year-old child to the point of kidnapping, it's just not my preferred style of entertainment. Every kindergarten teacher is going to be triggered.
AJ Walker it is unfortunate that you did not take in the context provided in the movie to learn the real message of this movie.
The comment section is cancer here! Maybe watch the film before JUDGEMENT?! The entire point of this film is she recognizes talent in this kids poems. She knows with time as he grows older this world will crush him and he will lose his talent. Because that's what we humans like to do to each other "crush each others dreams". Because god forbid someone is a successful and has true talent, and god forbid human encourage someone with talent. INSTEAD we got a comment section full of dream crushers who say this is creepy...LOL you people are monkeys wearing clothes lol!
Yes please.
the most ironic thing about this is that the actor for the little kid, has anything but talent
JayC I think the role was supposed to be for a quiet child someone who doesn’t really “need” to necessarily act for this particular role , I’m sure the role required him to be a introverted child
Wait, South Park already did this, sorta. Ike's Kindergarten teacher is in a "relationship" with him and all Ike can say is "I did a doo doo"
Maggie Gyllenhall's face is melting......
i think some of the people in the comment section are missing that by the end of the trailer, you're SUPPOSED to think it's weird and creepy. it's not unintentional, it's not 'wow if u think about it' creepy, it's purposely about a woman who projects onto a little kid and goes way too far about it- that's why he's calling for help at the end. she isn't supposed to be a hero here
But why even doing such a movie? I think is to distort people's mides even further and then show them even more disturbing movies. This is goings to hell
Hans zimmer's time from inception please !!!
@@kiniarobik8429, because that’s the point of the thriller genre and there is a message about women having the ability to be predatory
@@kiniarobik8429 That's what great stories do. They give you a conundrum. They make you think. They make you see the complications and complexities of life.
