- On board with Andy Newall in the 900bhp McLaren M8F as he goes head-to-head with Rob Hall in a V12 Matra at Silverstone Classic! The full throttle race got too close for comfort as the pair competed for the lead...

Thanks for the owners for putting those beasts on the track. Better to have a little scratch here and there than to left those cars to be garage queens. Cheers and keep it up.
Epic! That moose motor, the under steer, the speed from corner to corner, so much to focus on, a real brute even with the space to play on at Silverstone. I was worried about collide, but it was just a bump n run, I hate to see beauties like these damaged, respect to the owners n drivers for giving it some out there.
That gearbox certainly has some very close ratios!
Racing boxes usually do.
Two of me favorite cars. M8F and MS670
Collide? You mean that tiny bump? C'mon Goodwood, do you really think you need to resort to clickbait titles to get people to watch your videos?
collide
verb
hit by accident when moving.
I see what u mean, but in this case, i'm pretty glad for the Matra ^^
Funny calling it a tiny bump. Luckily that was all!
What was once world firsts (Koenigsegg One;1, Petty's Suerbird, etc...) has become trashy clickbait. Looking at the numbers, you'd think they'd noticed this by now?
you have to factor in that those cars cost well over $10 million, and they are classics of racing.
BOAH ... that hurts ... two of my favorite cars ...
Love the sound of those colse ratio gear shifts😚👌
Epic Drive Andy !
Gee, I thought I was the only one who noticed.
Is he on/off with the throttle or do these big blocks stumble when they are too low in the rev range? I'm thinking you'd want to be low in the rev range to drive out of corners with all that torque but it doesn't look smooth at all!
Fast on straights wobblee in cornering
mclaren twerkin
When too much power is just too much.
That McLaren is begging for traction. He cannot even open 15% of the throttle in the curves because he is spinning the wheels.
And that with tires as wide as a Congo watermelon!
No more like 16.5%
Bullshit.
Big v8 is a monster on the straight! I could hear it hit the Rev limiter a few times. 🏁
C’est quoi ce bruit de tondeuse à gazon sur la McLaren?
Having large attachments helps to drive these beasts!
Looks like this car could do so much better than in this video..
Nope the 8 litre Detroit monster was giving its all but was no match for the science of the 3 litre European.
The Matra is just a bit too quick.
Andy was driving the wheels off it. If you notice later in the lap he tries opening the throttle a little bit earlier in the corners and the car is instantly sideways. Not really a racing car more an engine with wheels.
Certainly a handfull,
omg niiiiice
it was just a bump, stop the drama
Wow!!!!
Went to a number of can am series events in 1970s watched mc larens which could even be quite dull as they outmatched all competition...and you never saw opposite lock or sliding in corners as both Bruce and Denny were dead smooth through whole race jacky Stewart in the Lola was more exciting as the car was much more prone to drift...though the Macs were just faster cars
CanAm became known as the Bruce n Denny show
@@psk1w1 And both kiwis by the way.
That L&M Lola didn’t handle particularly well in the early days. They eventually sorted it out then Lola gave it away.
rough throttle applications through the corners by the mc laren driver. not at all smooth and it upsets the chassis' grip through the corners. very entertaining video. those cars were wonderful to watch in their day.
I know these cars are fast but that video looked like it was in 'fast motion' to me.... just a bit faster than what it should have been. Is this possible?
Hi Buzz, this footage is at its original speed.
Goodwood Road & Racing amazing
60 fps,probably.
Buzz65 You have to appreciate that Silverstone is also one of the fastest circuits in the World. These boys were having as much fun as you can have with your pants on.
This is all real-time and I'm Jeleous. 'They just don't make 'em like they used to'. Good to see the two of them racing, the cars feel proud. Peace
Buzz65 this looks sped up to me, especially with the mclarens engine note, it just sounds off, and looks slightly too fast.
so..now big block chevys put out 900hp!
i wish this was in 3d
lol at people in the comments. they must be europeans.
these raced in north america. they had no brakes, no downforce, no abs, no handling but just sheer raw straight line speed.
Andy Newall has been around these cars and racing them for afew years now. this is how they are. nothing but wild beasts
#1. I don't know why I bother #2. These cars raced in EUROPE it was called Interserie #3. They WERE FASTER than the F-1 cars at tracks like MOSPORT they BOTH raced at the in same season, so how do you figure they had no downforce, brakes, etc?
No brakes, downforce, or handling. Are you fuckin' MAD??
Guy Van Brussel yeah braking from 190mph without brakes seems reasonable
Jeff Wagner this particular mclaren raced in America in the can am series, goodwood interviewed the driver, andy. He also says in this interview that it actually generates quite a bit of downforce, and it has close to 900hp
czcams.com/video/WrSDAnnMLi4/video.html
no down force Mike Hunt? Please watch the video where Newell explains the car.
Don't know if he has but, i have. Though the shape is meant to create downforce it's not even remotely enough relative to the horsepower it produces. Sadly, modern LMGT cars can turn faster laps because they're so much faster through the corners. Wish they could fit modern bodywork (with all the little aero bits) over the chassis. The laps it could probably turn (even still using the 70's era suspension layout) would potentially be wicked quick.
TheQwaz Don't compare these to modern cars.
@@TheQwaz What’s wrong with modern cars being faster?
speed limited for the Mclaren?
may be limited in rpm .. for don't damage the engine.. easily the engine ? am i right ?
may have been valve float. its only a 3 speed, and 2 and 3 are super close together
Stop making excuses.
@@stevewilson2745 They were 4 speed Hewland gearboxes, not 3... This one was not geared properly for here.
No, just not as quick.
Just seems like the McLaren is unable to put the power down or something. And the throttle usage sounds more like stabs instead of smooth. Am I wrong?
Surya De Remember these are using 70s tech. These engines aren't nearly as refined.
These cars are light and with 8.0ls of big block chevy over the rear tires the torque curve is probably very much biases towards low to mid range.
No, the Matra is just a bit more modern and better balanced. You don’t win races just by having the most powerful engine.
The McLaren driver could make his job a lot easier by just leaving it in top gear. It must have more than enough torque to spin the rears at any revs, even in top.
There’s a bit more to it than the engine. The Matra is making most of its gains under brakes and in the corners.
Obviously the V12 Matra had 2 Many Ponies 4 the McLaren. Went by like a rocket
The Matra was making all its gains under brakes and in the corners.
I agree that car needs a better driver keep up that RPM in those Corners note heel-and-toe work when needed
Power is a big issue in these cars it's hard for a torque monster to be pleasant
Great action! Rich guys are cool! That love tap cost some money, remember a tin of McLaren Orange paint cost a zillion dollars. Just ask Tiff.
I was thinking of painting my Probe tuner McLaren orange, so I checked with them for a gallon of the paint a few years ago. Holy Jebus! &1,700 a gallon!
That must be some dam good paint!
Some understeer eh?
lack o heeltoe and downshift.. hum
I'm confused, what exactly do you mean..?
Watching the video he's utilizing the "heel toe" method on nearly every downshift.. If you listen closely when he enters his braking zones you can hear him kick the clutch in and disengage the gear, which is then followed by a short blip of the throttle just before releasing the clutch in the new lower gear.
The McLaren has the legs, but the Matra has the handling & there aren't enough straights to get around. Either the McLaren driver isn't the smoothest or the damn thing is horribly tuned.
Or maybe the Matra is the better car.
Is the Matra drived by JP Beltoise ? 🇫🇷
Ragnotti and Beltoise big fan
Sure. Also Pescarolo, Cevert, Larousse, Depailler and Wollek!
it sound like the honda 50cc 4 stroke single cylinder moped my classmate used to ride in the '70's...
😮
C'est bien beau d'avoir de la puissance... Mais quand elle passe pas au sol..... Ben elle passe pas..... 😁 Regardez la fluidité de la Matra... Avec 400 chevaux de moins.... 😁 😊 😊
Sounds like misfires , he's lifting his foot !!!
That car is pushing like a pig..
So I guess they're both written off now ? They wrote off my Fiesta for less than this. Shame, as they're both very pretty cars !
Pretty poor driving. Not smooth, throttle all over the shop...
Says the keyboard racing driver. Can you send us all a link of your driving prowess?
Jason O'Reilly ... I have done enough racing to know when someone gets it wrong.
@@sueneilson896 ok kool :)
Yes, I’m sure you could do so much better. Andy has been driving this car for years. What do you have on your résumé?
Cause a bro fist isn't a bro fist unless it's at 130 mph..lol
I very much doubt that this thing makes much more than 700 hp.
I think it looks slower on video.
No, I just mean that an naturally aspirated pushrod V8 isn't likely to have anything close to 900 hp in this kind of car.
In period (1972-74), they were making +/- 750hp. Today, after 40+ years of development, the big block Can-Am cars are making closer to 1,000hp.
I find that hard to believe. Are they running alcohol?
there's no replacement for displacement
A little too much "red mist" and testosterone!
