A big part of enjoying the Keys is the drive down from Miami. There’s 45 islands connected by 44 bridges. The longest bridge is 7 miles long. There’s plenty of party spots and restaurants all the way down.

Honestly the only thing that hasn't changed is Duval St. I was born here over 50 years ago. We used to have a abundance of exotic parrot's, many fruit trees, mangoes of all sizes, all kinds of Banana's, Tamarinds, Papayas,Giant coconuts, Wild honey all over the Islands. you could even find Watermelon on Stock Island. The Beaches used to be huge until they put Condominiums on them. The beaches had seashells by the handfuls. I remember the enormous mantarays that would swim in packs by the sand bar. Also there was Queen Conches everywhere, and the Florida lobsters crawled along the shorelines at sunset and sunrise. To me that was real Key West.

Yeah I hear you .Went to grammar school there for a year in 1966 to 1967 . A kids Paradise , Especially ,for an Northeasterner As a 13 year old living with an older , very disciplined , Military Officer stationed at BC .I too had my duties at a rental property Being " shipped " there to " learn " some disciple The dread of not really knowing what to expect in such a far away places in a new school with no friends I was so afraid But it didn't last long when the Huck Finn in me came out .Even " strenuous labor was fun. Some I even made enough money to frequent the town docks often Even enough to fish on the head boats , that turned into a " job ' of washing boats to filet or cleaning customers caught fish Both numbers and sizes which today would be next to impossible I was ever more responsible ,organized , disciplined , prompt ,courteous.etc ..and always more helpful , considerate .than that rebellious, could care less kid I was in the NE I tearfully left when my big brother , whom I idolized, said Well kid you have to say your " good byes " At first , I did not understand it or perhaps knew it but hoped I was wrong .But when he said I have my " orders " report by 0 900 hundred to such and such.a base by ...and I knew exactly where his next mission would be assigned anywhere in North America It was a very long drive up to my aunt's home in St Pete that was essentially a senior citizen waiting list to eternity Only then did the tears flow BUT I discovered sort of an appreciation there too .Now in my late 70s .I've returned to the Keys so many times I lost count sometimes once sometimes 4 to 5 times yearly depending .It's not the the wilderness that it once was Not that secluded ,hideaway from the crowds type place BUT for me and the very few friends left there is still that charm No matter if it's your 1sr or 100th time there Seeing that you hail from Wisconsin you can still root for the ":Cheese heads " back in GB ...AND you won't be alone !! Hope you get a chance to return ! Haven't been physically there since post Irma or Pandemic years .But pray fully in Feb 2023 ll If the coveted gate of heaven are Like the Keys ,I'll do my darnedest to gain admission!

I live in the Keys, so I have some advice.
-Don’t take your eyes off the road! When you drive the overseas highway, don’t let the views entrance you, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy it. Our highway is literally the most deadly stretch of road per mile in the United States due to distracted driving.
-Don’t be reckless on the water! Lately following the pandemic, I’ve seen way too many people act like jack*sses on the water and endanger their lives and divers. I’ve seen way too many jet skis tear though ft deep water and nearly kill swimmers in the water. If you see a red flag with a white stripe, that’s a dive flag, give a wide berth around that boat in the water as there are swimmers/divers.
-Do take a walk in Key West at the crack of dawn. Just take basic situational awareness and you’ll get a much less crowded walking experience.
-Do always check the weather. Way too many people get caught in storms which were forecasted for hours ago. Check key west NWS when you plan your day, a lot of weather apps think we’re in the ocean and give inaccurate weather.
-Do get your gas in Key Largo or Marathon. Other islands absolutely tax on their prices, especially key west.

INCOMPETENT JUSTICE SYSTEM AND LAW ENFORCMENT IN THE KEYS !!!!! I was a victim of an attempted assault in lower keys Unfortunately I, the victim, was arrested due to investigatory negligence by the Monroe County Sherriff’s Office. There were cameras pointing in the direction of where the incident occurred. There were signs next to the front gate that stated the property is under cameras surveillance. The arresting deputy, however, wrote in the arrest report "I did not see cameras . He lied ! The deputy did not ask anybody if there were cameras there , he did not looked for them . While being transported to jail , I informed the deputy that there were cameras on the property. I asked the deputy to collect the video surveillance. That request was ignored. The next day, I requested that the fence that is integral to this incident be examined for fingerprints. This is important because the position of the fingerprints would have demonstrated that the aggressor climbed the fence to the top . The request was again ignored. The Sheriff deputies could not comprehend out how the aggressor climbed the fence. Climbing that particular fence for a fit men is actually easy. I would say a twelve year old boy could do it . Because the sheriff deputy wrongly believed it was impossible to climb the fence he stopped further investigating the case , he did not believe my version of events and did not collect any evidence of fence climbing . The deputies were easily manipulated by a perpetrator with a criminal record who arrived in the keys 4 weeks before the incident occurred. I am a 23 year resident in the keys with an absolutely clean record . Deputies exhibited no common sense whatsoever in this case. Not one sheriff deputy who arrived was older and experienced . The botched investigation resulted in the victim being arrested and the dangerous criminal let go !!!! . No evidence was collected by the Sherriff’s Office , making it now difficult for the court to establish the truth. I was forced to search and obtain evidence myself. Some evidence was luckily collected in the last moments before it was erased and disappeared forever. It should not be a luck but professional investigation which obtains evidence. I have already filed a complaint against the sheriff’s department . No response was given (Not collecting evidence really amounts to destroying evidence ) . State attorney Denis Ward was also notified, he is completely worthless. The Prosecutor assigned in this case is continuing this case on a ridiculous presumption that climbing fence was not possible. Me a 59 year old men created a video showing how easy it is to climb this kind of fence , I did it in 2 seconds !!! . THIS SITUATION IS PREVENTING ME , FROM PRESSING CHARGES AGAINST ATACKER AND HAVE him PROSECUTED . Everything stated here I can support with photos and videos .This incompetence is wasting taxpayer's money and judicial resources . I can only say sarcastically that people should not call the sheriff's department when bank robbery is occurring because they will arrest the bank clerk instead of the bank robber .......................... My reputation had been also damaged by media's employee of sheriff department who published only side of the story of attacker , my side of the story was ignored . When I protested of such unfair treatment I got response " We are sorry but we cannot retract article ".. My advice to the public anything you hear from sheriff department take with a pinch of salt , looks to me like they are more interested in sensationalism and making themselves look like heroes instead of fighting for truth and justice . It is also a CORAL REEF so all the sand on the beaches are shipped in, wearing water shoes or some kind of protection for the soles of your feet is necessary especially if you wade out into the reef area (I stepped on a sea urchin and got poisoned spines in my heel). My reputation had been also damaged by media's employee of sheriff department who published only side of the story of attacker , my side of the story was ignored . As a general rule, my impression of Florida is "meh". I like Tallahassee, US 27 to Ocala (and Ocala), SR 40 east-west across the state (and the Ocala National Forest, which is drop-dead *gorgeous*), Tampa/St. Pete -- and the rest of the state leaves me rather cold...
...except for the Keys. The Keys are phenomenal. The drive from Miami to Key West is one of the best drives I've ever taken. I really think the Keys, and especially Key Largo and Key West, ought to be on everybody's bucket list to do at least *once* in their lives. The food in the Keys is *better* than New Orleans, and the drive on the Overseas Highway is breathtaking. Just make sure to keep your speed down *and watch the road*.
One thing Mark didn't mention: you may see a waterspout during your drive on the Overseas Highway. If it appears to be crossing over the highway, *let it pass. Do NOT try to drive through a waterspout!*

    A couple more:
If you rent a scooter....DO NOT BEEP THE HORN! unless you absolutely have to.
It's tempting to beep the horns in celebration when you're scooting around with friends.....the locals HATE it.
Don't feed ANYTHING on land or in the water...manatees, pelicans, iguanas.etc......even tarpons (although some tourist destinations encourage it) They will survive just fine without your handouts.
Do not walk on living coral.
Leave the cats alone....they are mostly feral and want nothing to do with you.
Drive with extra caution and stay focused....there's only one way in/out and even minor accidents can have a ripple effect for miles and delay hundreds (if not thousands) of people...there are no detours.
Pay attention and actually listen to you boat captain, tour guide, concierge, etc....the information they are trying to relay to you is important.
The Keys environment is ultra--sensitive ....respect it and leave nothing but footprints.

Good job, sir. I think I would have emphasized the lack of sandy beaches more. There are a few motels that shipped in sand but for the most part the "beaches" are coral rocks and coral sludge. We retired here 4 years ago at MM10 Big Coppitt and were surprised by the lack of sandy beaches. In fact we boat out to local sand bars and party. Great fun.
The cost of living down here is so bad many locals are priced out and have to move to the mainland or live 4 or 5 to a house and share expenses. Getting service help is near impossible. We love our small community here at Seaside.

We had a great time, it started to rain so we ducked into the first bar to wait it out, which turned out to be 'Bull's Bar' & they had EXCELLENT strawberry & banana daiquiris! I do want to go back because we didn't have much time & I'd love to go through Truman's winter white house along with a few other 'sites'. We did do the trolly tour & still laugh that a guy on a moped came up behind us & yelled 'Start drinking now!' Coincidently, it was after that ride that we ducked into Bull's Bar to wait out the rain so yes, we did have a couple 🍹😄

In case you want to try it be sure to open her up and put the petal to the metal as your passing through Layton or The Key Deer Refuge. If your lucky you’ll have a little memento to take back home with you or even free overnight lodging courtesy of local law enforcement.

Sure has changed since I lived there in the early 60s. Half the population was stationed at the Naval Station - like my dad - the rest were mostly fishermen or worked at businesses catering to scuba divers, snorkelers, outdoors types & nature lovers etc. And my folks should have kept our house on Roosevelt Blvd, new in 1960 @ $10,000 or so!!

It wasn't until we moored our boat in the marina that I appreciated being in KW was worth the price of admission. We could walk out at 2am and there was a party going on. Made all the difference in our KW experience as opposed to staying in marathon and driving in. Good job!

I have some good friends in Rhode Island who are of Italian heritage. They run a business where they use conch meat chopped up to make their snail salad which they sell commercially. It is delicious ! They also make and sell excellent Italian sausage, both hot and mild.

You're spot on with your comments. It's easy to just walk around Key West. Having a car is really a waste and pretty much a general pain in the neck. And the chickens...they're crazyyyyy and they're in charge. Lol.

I just finished with a weekend at keywest and I’d suggest in regards to the southernmost monument, I’d suggest go early in the morning if you want a picture with it, me and my fiancé kept trying to take pictures but that line was longgggg So we went back the morning we were set too leave key west, we went at about 8am and their was maybe like 2/3 people there. So if you don’t mind waiting in a long line then it’s fine to go at anytime but if you hate waiting then I’d definitely suggest going in the morning to get your pictures.

Thank you Wolter. That video brought up some nice memories. In 2001 my wife and I stayed in Key West in the Youth hostel (we were travelling around Southern Florida). We used the coach service from Miami to go there.
We liked it a loi, and the food really is nice, and people are easy going. But what we never could understand was the thing with "The Southernmost part of the continental USA". Key West is an island, so what is the point with that? :-) I think tourism promotion.
When I metioned the food, yes, it really was good and tasty. Our exception: The lime pie: We couldn't eat it as it was much to sweet. I even warned others after that experience: Eat anything, but lime pie. :-)
The colours of the sunset were very beautiful, but we considered it a little bit awkward when people were clapping after the sun had set. It gives the eerie feeling as that must have been the last last performance of that play. :-)
So, yes, one day I like to visit Key West another time. And thanks again for that nice video!

I was there in 1997 and still have fond memories of the trip. I even enjoyed the drive down from Miami to Key West, seeing it all, stopping places. However, the drive over the 7 mile bridge was a little unnerving. Only water below you and sky above.

My wife and I flew into the keys in October and stayed two weeks and enjoyed it! We talked to the locals and ended up eating at some great off the beaten path restaurants and food trucks without breaking the bank. We partied with locals at the places they hang out in and had a great time and made some life long friends . We rode the free bus from the hotel to town and then rode the free bus around town to do the tourists things during the day, sunset at Mallory square the southern buoy and tried some of the restaurants on Duvall St and they were all great but partying with the local people was an experience that made our trip awesome! We are already planning a motorcycle trip from Maryland this year to visit our new friends. Cannot wait!!
