Yeah man. I’m a sparky in NY and do mostly residential. The richer people are, the more they b1tch and moan. I’ll give them an estimate to redo their totally gutted kitchen and they act shocked at the price when it’s only a couple of thousands dollars. Then when you come back to finish the job and see that they spent $15K on appliances and $100K on cabinets. That stuff is so marked up by the stores that sell them that those companies are making a fortune. I’m barely charging enough to get the job done and get by. The people that have a lot of money don’t mind spending it on top of the line stuff but it pains them so much to spend it on labor.
You did rob him. The deal was to connect the water line to the fridge. I didnt hear anything specifying that the deal was to connect it directly or there would be additional labor fees. You agreed to hook the water line up as the customer asked for a given price. That WAS in the original scope. Why would you assume it to be a direct connection without asking? That's on you. Frankly, I'd pay another contractor even more to do it if they were upfront with me simply out of principle. It was gonna be this much to hook up a water line that was it. You could have told him more. Maybe you did maybe didn't but I don't know that from the story is all of you have an external filter. It's going to cost you this much. If you get the built-in filter, it's going to be this much, so if you didn't inform your client correctly. It's kind of your fault too. Just saying this as a heavy duty mechanic. I ran into similar issues. Nothing to do with plumbing in a fucking fridge. But similar issues, but just my opinion. And he lost himself a repeat customer, as well as possibly this person family, and friends that he complains about it to. But hey, he made 350 I guess.
As an arborist who knows how to take care of trees, I do know the situation… people feel like they are paying you so much $2500/day but they don’t understand that in order to get the job done safely you have invested 10x the money they are paying you in only a few of your tools.

I dealt with a lady that just couldn't understand $250 labor charge on a job changing broken bathroom tiles,3 shower racks, 1950s door knob rebuild, and carpet removal from the entire upper floor and stairs in the hood. I thought I got bent.
Doesn’t matter you pay for experience, time, and accountability. Ask yourself would you charge less, you have to get up in morning, pay for insurance, fuel, parking, employee, for $50 ? I can change out a toilet in 15-20 min should I be punished for my experience and efficiency?
Ultimately, it comes down to what you charge for your services. However, your pricing should remain relatively constant, fair, and not artificially increased due to personal bias or pride. Your experience and efficiency are saving your most valuable resource: time. Attempting to extract more money and time from the equation is both dishonest and lazy. Charging customers more for less of your time often stems from a sense of pride and can result in long-term losses. Upholding the ideology you just discussed is only fertile ground for potential corruption, greed manipulation, and lies; which is what most modern prices are built upon nowadays. Like I said, comes down to what you charge. If someone is charging $200 in labor to install a toilet and it takes them 15 minutes, id say that's a consequence of untrammeled pride and a bit of greed because theyre essentially saying theyre worth $800/hour to install a toilet. Absolutely silly no matter how you want to use words to justify it and any customer with half an ounce of sense is not going to call them back.
It's better to have the filter outside, because most fridges put the filter next to the blower and freeze the water in the filters. That causes the water to stop working. Your way is better.

I spend 15 minutes making sure the customer is happy and collect payment. 6. I spend 15 minutes writing a description of the job I did, uploading pictures of the work, debriefing with the office, and being dispatched to my next call. 7. The Customer also gets a 1 year warranty on all my work. In conclusion, I as the licensed plumber spend 2 hours of my day to hook up that fridge, and the customer knows that if anything goes wrong, they can give us a call and we will immediately come fix it! What price were you expecting!🤣😂 That also doesn’t include the cost of gas, office workers time, marketing etc.

Ultimately, it comes down to what you charge for your services. However, your pricing should remain relatively constant, fair, and not artificially increased due to personal bias or pride. WHY??? Because it's all free information online. There are how-to-videos for anything your want to do.
***Please people stop hiring scum bag plumbers electricians etc...remember if they don't have the tool to do your job they are up charging you for them to go purchase said tool and when the job is done they get to keep it.
You may as well buy the tool you need for the job and watch a few CZcams how to videos rather than buy the tool for a random stranger who will, not take the tool in trade for the job as they perhaps should (or they should be the tool on their own dime and not charge the customer for it.),but they'll just keep the tool and sometimes even return it for bonus money on that job. Same goes for materials. They''ll charge you for some material that they had extra from a previous job, that another customer already paid for.
Wise up people and don't get caught listening to some idiots story about how they overpaid for a box truck and tools and therefore are somehow worth the ridiculous price their asking.
Karma is real buddy.
There's a special place in hell for plumbers, contractors, eletrictions, mechanics...etc... You know who you are and may God ensure you end up in Hell.
I'm a minister and I hope you all receive the ultimate justice. I'll be praying for it.
Karma
Is
Real
Amen
"Yeah, now you know for next time broski"😂😂😂😂I
Yeah that’s my fridge. Great filter on the top right of unit. Change it every 3 months. Exact same as you just installed. Still gotta change that one In fridge. You’ll reintroduce bacteria if not.
Absolutely he should have spent the coin on it. I would explain to him that now he has to pull his fridge out to change the filter now too. It's business. Being cheap up front costs you in the long run 99% of the time. 350 is honestly a deal for that install too
That’s a $650 in Houston. I thought everything was more expensive in New York?
650 in houston what the fuck you guys doing over there, i’d feel bad charging 200 for this😭 i live on a island of rich ppl 10k pop, 2 plumbers here
What type of cliental do you have, you probably charge 1k for cartridge replacement.
Not sure about free work but putting a filter on a line shouldn’t take more than 20 min and $350 for a 20 min job is ripping people off, saying it as a contractor
I stopped feeling bad about that stuff. A few hundred bucks is way cheaper than spending years of your life, busting your ass to learn a trade so you can have people tell you how to do it.
You charged $350 for that 6 minutes of "work?"
As appalling as that is, the more concerning thing is that someone paid your 350 for pushing in 4 connections and driving two screws.
One thing I learned from my father is that in this type of case people pay more for the knowledge and convenience than for the time or effort of the job.
In the case of my father who works as an accountant for a job of less than 1/2 hour people pay an absurd amount of money
When did he say it takes him 6 mins... Maybe actually listen.
350 for that install.... you robbed him
Im also a contractor and people literally expect shit for free its truly insane
You felt bad but this is business..... that's exactly why you don't feel bad
Idk why at first glance I thought you were wearing a spiderman suit😂
Didn't even realize they made them without filters if the fridge was from the last 20 years.
"Yeah you really should've" is always an acceptable answer
They need to teach a class in school about home ownership. From buying to maintenance to repairs and a special chapter on insurance companies and home warranty companies.
