On Christmas Eve 1978, Chris Rea needed to get home from London, so his wife Joan drove 250 miles to collect him in their black Classic Mini. As they journeyed back in the snow, inspiration struck... creating one of the most beloved Christmas songs of all time.

I never had a Mini or a Cooper. BUT: As a former Soldier from the German Army i was stationed in the UK for a while at ´91 and heard that song for the first time. It was around christmas and after my deployement on the Outer Hebrides we were flown out with a C130 Hercules by the RAF back to Gütersloh; Germany. At that time i had a Sony Walkman and that sound on a tape. Listening to that music ... homebounded after months ... looking forward to see my family again which i missed so deeply over that time! Priceless feelings.
Always "Driving home for Christmas" is since then related to me with joy.
I am 61 years at age now. I am still working and there is since that very moment when i put on my earphones at RAF Station Benbecula when boarding the plane ONE habit that i love soooo much:
On the last work day before our christmas vacation i step in my car, open up my stereo and i start the engine with the first tune of that wonderfull, soul- and joyfull song! My way home at the moment is normally only 4 miles. But: I "waste ;-)" fuel to make that way longer and just stroll around for an hour or two.
That is the REAL starting for me for my personal christmas feeling!
So: Than you so much, Chris Rea for enriching my life!

It is wonderful to see Chris Rea being interviewed again and in great spirits. He has been through so much health wise. "Driving Home for Christmas" is one of the Best Christmas songs ever written in my opinion. In Ireland we have a "Green party" idiot (To put it very mildly) who was allegedly trying to reduce radio time for playing this song in order to reduce the amount of people from getting behind the wheel of their car!!! I KID YOU NOT!!! What is the world coming to...

Outstanding advert and my gosh, 100% true to the Mini brand in terms of a great positive international vibe!!! Just perfect! Sums up the MINI to perfection. My MINIs were awesome. I remember driving to a party in my first MINI - a 1987 Mini Park Lane in black. When I parked my car, I really beautiful, elegant lady walked past and said 'What a lovely car'. Then I bought a brand new fully spec'd Mini Cooper upon gradating from university in 2005. I was driving around Liverpool. At the traffic lights a guy in a Ford Mondeo opened his window and said 'I bet that is great unto drive' IT IS I said. Then when driving home, I saw an old boy in a classic Mini from the 1970s and we both nodded to each other - proud of our MINIs :) :) :) :) :) mine was cooler as it had the FAB Harmon Kardon sound system and the lovely sunroof :) :) :) JUST PERFECT CARS!!!!!!!!!
