It’s exactly been 8 days since Hiatal Hernia Repair, and Nissen Fundoplication Surgery.
Stopped pain meds Friday so that’s 5 days only on pain meds. Still having issues swallowing so my diet on day 8 is mainly clear liquids, Cream of Wheat, popsicles. No dairy at all it causes diarrhea.
Just had my surgery today. It's the best thing you could have done if you have gerd or LPR. I am experiencing zero symptoms after surgery. It's been almost 12 hours since the procedure. I have a sore abdomen and pain the upper chest near shoulder's from the anesthesia they gave me. However I have made myself walk ten minute intervals every three hours. Walking has been the BEST relief in my opinion. God bless everyone 🙏
How are u doing now?
@@user-cj4sq6pb1c today I'm 4 weeks out. So far so good. I'm still on a soft normal diet and won't be cleared from that until the 6 week mark when I go back for another follow-up. Every surgeon is different with the diet part. Mine saw me at 3 weeks and advanced me from liquid diet to normal soft diet. Absolutely zero heartburn and reflux 🙏. I'm having minor swallowing problems and my surgeon told me it's normal because everything is still swollen and will go away between 6 weeks and 3 months. The first week was the hardest part for me and that was from the gas from the anesthesia. I had more chest and left shoulder pain than anything. Everyday just kept getting better. Walk as much as you can and follow the diet instructions. Those two things helped me the most 😊 it's really not as bad as I anticipated.
Hello Stephanie! How are you now ?
Thanks for giving your reviews on it Steph, hope you are well x
@@stephaniefoster8009 hello
How are you now?
Thank you for sharing your story thought I would share mine to help others, my first Nissen laparoscopic fundoplication was a failure surgeon tied the knot too high and too tight I could not swallow food it would sit above my stomach and felt like it squirted in, when food got stuck I would try drinking some water it only put more pressure on it I got by with applesauce and baby food when I got it redone it was open surgery, way more pain and recovery started to come good then got violently ill as I was heaving I pushed the knot above my diaphragm got another open surgery even more pain and recovery because of dissecting scar tissue poked my stomach back down put mesh on my diaphragm and sewed me back up took a long time to recover I had hemorrhaging class 1 ulceration in my oesophagus, last surgery was 6 years ago now I'm going well, very appreciative of the help I got take care all the best.... Just want to add best thing for pain other than ketamine was hot water bottle
Benjamin Rogers wow, thanks for sharing! I’m so glad you’re doing great now!!! Sorry you had to go through all of that!
Gayle . In 99% of the comments I troll but I also am going through GERD, no medications work anymore. Hard to breathe and sleep a lot of times. It’s rough .... and let me tell you.... both you and the gentleman who wrote his story above are an inspiration to me.
I have a ton of respect for you, you are so positive. Can only hope that I can get the will to have the nissen surgery. Something has to change. I’m so glad for you that you where willing to make that happen for yourself. Life is scary sometimes. Hope you are doing well.
I am doing well it has been 7 years post surgery I do not have stomach ulcers anymore, I still have medication I am on pantoprazole, I get a bit of reflux if I don't have my meds but nothing compared to how I was, I highly recommend Nissen fundoplication with reflux you aspirate acid breathe it into your lungs and do damage and it's hard to sleep because you're laying down the acid comes up, you need lots of pillows all this gets resolved after surgery.
A few months after surgery when you can eat properly again and swallow without food getting stuck you will have quality of life, all the best.
I took that medicine for a year and then it did t work anymore, took omeperazole, that stopped working as good then they prescribed me 80mg if it, that just made my belly hurt, now I’m on esomeperazole, and that’s starting to not work as well. These quack doctors just wanna throw more meds at us. It clearly ain’t working. So what is the solution? Double up! Great! Let’s double up on stuff that doesn’t work. It’s the definition of insanity.
Thx for sharing your story Ben. I’m looking into a tif procedure.... almost like nissen except it’s done via endoscopy and from the inside so less invasive. But I’ll try anything at this point. Sleeping on 6 inch blocks and three pillows only getting 4-6 hours a night if I’m lucky. Wake up everyday to chest pain.
Sounds like me for months. Maybe my knot was too high. My Doctor never returned my calls after surgery. Not one. Eye roll.
I'm 63 and I had big hiatal hernia repair with Nissan Fundoplicaption on Jan 4th 22. Everything went well, stayed overnight, witch was the best decision. I only had to take pain medicine for 2 days. I was able to walk 5 hours after the surgery.
After the surgery the shoulders hurt more than the incisions and still a bit sore.
I'm glad it's over. Still on clair liquids diet.
Still on clear liquids 5 months later? I had surgery 2 weeks ago and just starting a soft diet! Hospital stay was 3 nights , suppose to be 1! I’m a little older then you! Hope all is well now!
@@joannpaulsen8145No, that was 5 months ago, liquid/soft diet 8 weeks.
@@Savetino didn’t know I would need to be on a soft diet for 8 weeks!
Thank you for your honesty 🙏 I finally got my hiatial hernia surgery ❤😊 and im glad I am not alone! God Bless
My Dr. mentioned that I have Hiatal Hernia although I have H-Pylori as well which they cured. As of now, they're disregarding that the Hiatal Hernia might be the cause of my heartburn, belching, hard to swallow and just bloating... I kept telling them perhaps it's the Hiatal Hernia... after watching this, I feel like it's safe to say I want to bring this issue up. Thank you for sharing this and I hope you feel so much better now!
My doctor had me do a CT scan drinking dye, and having IV dye, and I had a swallow scan done. I've had a hiatal hernia for 20+ yrs with no problem, next month I will be having this same surgery to fix my stomach from coming up into my chest.
Omg this exactly me. Doctor said live with it. This not an option.
@@deannah9485did you have the surgery
I'm so scared went In for consultation waiting for surgery date this did help a lot thanks for posting
did you go for it?
Yesss i need to know also
Rebeccah please keep us posted
GEt those charcoal pills Rebeccah They are EVERYTHING so glad she mentioned them. Also, order the high protein broth to keep a little energy up and a GOOD electrolyte powder ( I get a plant based sugar free one at Whole Foods Called Ultima that is EXCELLENT for energy and to prevent leg cramps in bed.)
Hope your recovery is going well. Just had my surgery the day after your posting. Currently doing the pureed food stage and it sucks. Only benefit right now is the enforced weight loss due to the low calorie diet. I expect in the next couple of months, both of us will lose a lot of weight. Eight pounds in the last week. Speedy recovery from Oregon!
How are things going for you?
datahead15 I weigh 117 now. Hope I don't loose weight. Is that possible after an operation like hiatal hernia
Sorry for not responding sooner. 5 weeks out and I'm finally starting to work solid foods into my diet. For weight loss, I was told that some was to be expected. I was starting on a weight loss program before the surgery and lost 13lbs. Since then, my total weight loss is now 30lbs. I'm hoping to be back under 200lbs by the end of next summer. For yourself, don't be surprised if you lose 5-15lbs in the first 4 weeks. The liquid/pureed diet is pretty calorie restrictive. Allow your body to eat what it can. I was normally having about 4-6 meals with a total of less than 1500 calories a day. Eat a healthy, protein heavy diet and you won't have to worry. Your calorie intake will get higher as you include more solid foods. As long as you are not on a weight loss plan, your body will balance out. Hope that answered your question.
how long did you have to staff out of work for recovery?
I only took one week off after the surgery. However I should have taken at least two weeks off to deal with the recovery. Fortunately, I was confined to a desk for the first couple of months while recovering.
If you're about to have the surgery, make sure to take enough time off to recover. The longer the better. The first few weeks can be painful to move or sleep.
I can not swallow anything but broth and tea so far. I can't swallow cream of wheat or protein shake. They get "stuck" and then I throw up. I am 4 days in but hope I can eat cream of wheat at least soon. Thank you for the advice about the other broth. I will look for some. UPDATE I can not tell you how helpful this video has been. I got the high protein broth and the charcoal pills. I am so glad to know about them both. I was uninformed by my surgeon. Both of these have been MAJOR in my feeling better. Thank you for this video and all you shared.
Hi Anne, Is it because your swallow reflex isn't working or is it because you feel sick after swallowing thick stuff? I'm currently having difficulty swallowing and I haven't even had the surgery.
you should be on liquids only in the first week
@@wolfsy4759 I couldn't swallow ANYTHING but liquids for 3 months. Then, the next two months semi solids only. It took a full year to swallow without pain. And, my heartburn is not really any better. Maybe I "should" be but there was no way I could swallow anything except CLEAR broth the first few weeks.
@@annenelso I'm still in my first week on liquids only and my swallowing is getting better next week I'll start with more thicker liquids but I still feel like there's a reflux when I ley down after drinking I feel a lump in my throat and I need to swallow it
I have my surgery monday morning and curious to see videos on people who have had the same procedure and the outcome.ill be praying youre able to swallow soon.My surgeon explained to me that ill have to eat blended food for about 4 weeks,so hopefully ill have a great attitude about it like you.😊
I'm having hernia repair with muscle repair tomorrow. Did you experience bloating? My surgeon suggested that i stay on complete bed rest for 2-3 weeks.
I watched this before going for my surgery. thanks for sharing your story.

How did the surgery go?
I'm still in pain but not something I cant handle. I'm able to eat soft foods
@@yvonnerosales3394 update?
Thank you for this video, I am about to get my surgery on June 5, 2024. I am nervous but your video has calm me down some. I am ready with juices and baby food just in case at least its not so bad I can tolerate this.
I had my large hiatal hernia surgery with Nissen Fundoplication April 26th. It is going on my 5th week Post Op. I was in the hospital 2 nights ( I chose to stay the 2nd night). I am healing well and sticking with the soft food diet. But I was wondering when you were able to eat fresh vegetables and fresh fruit again and pizza and all those foods on the “not allowed list”. Thank you for your videos on the first week, week 3, and week 5, they were so helpful. I feel as though I know you. God Bless you and your family.... Stay healthy!
Please share me your.current status ..me have the same problem going to have surgery...
I am getting ready to have robotic surgery for my very large hiatal hernia. I really don’t have any symptoms. I am afraid of the recovery process. How long was the recovery and how long on liquid diet? Thank you
I just had a barium swallow and they found severe GERD (reaches my vocal cords) and a hiatal hernia. They don't seem like they want to do surgery, but I'm 25 and I can't live like this for the rest of my life, or until it gets worse enough.
Hello.. I am 19... And also i have haitus hernia..
Yeah I know for a fact I've had that hiatal hernia for such a long time. My PCP acted like it was nothing. You might want to get a 2nd opinion.
If you have GERD, then the acid will move to your lungs. That's complicated. It is my experience.
They would only operate on me after I had tried their list of medications without success. Which took almost 2 years from the time the pain started smh. Now I have throat/ear issues.... STAY ON THEM!!
@@travisbaxter6455 what type of ear issues? I am having severe earache that will not go away. Are your issues the same?
I had my hiatal hernia repaired with a takedown of my Dor Fundoplication from my previous Heller Myotomy that was done in 2002. My hernia repair was done on 9/11/23. I have Achalasia that was diagnosed in 2000.
I’m having trouble with severe diarrhea post surgery. I was on a clear fluid diet for five days prior to my surgery. Every time I drank broth I have severe (almost instantaneous) diarrhea. I let my surgeon know about this before my surgery. In the hospital I drank a cup of broth and instantly had horrible diarrhea.
I was sent home the day after my surgery even though I was not able to pass gas. I burped a couple of times and still felt very bloated. Since getting home I was told I could switch to a puréed food diet. I’ve pretty much been living on water, iced/hot tea and jello. I’m hiccuping all the time and having extreme pain on my fourth day post op. I spoke with my surgeons nurse and she said to use a heating pad to ease the hiccups and to take Imodium for the diarrhea.
The thing that irritates me the most is my post op check up will be four weeks and it is going to be a televisit! SMH!
This is awful! I see it's been 3 week since your commented here. How are you doing today?
Iam having trouble. Also I had nissen wrap in 2007 and have been having it stretch esophagus like ever 3 yrs and have been tell them that I have had trouble bending to tie shoes, twist, and top breast bone would feel like something was pushing out. I would by hand push in that area snd try to push it back in. So I here you. So now after a upper Gi scope I need to see surgeon next
I need this surgery right away and I’m too scared to do it. Do not want to be able to burp or throw up. Have a hernia and GERD and have just been dealing for years. I now have chronic gastritis and so sick when I eat or don’t eat. Thanks for sharing!
Kari I understand what you’re going through! I would do this over again if I had to choose. Definitely nice not having any GERD symptoms since the surgery 🎉. Keep me posted.
Try to get a partial (toupet) wrap. It's been proven to have the same effect as a full wrap, and you can most likely burp, and throw up if you have to.
steffmeister this is so helpful to know. I will ask! I’m so very sick right now with my stomach. I put off for a few years and can’t anymore, I have an auto immune disease and causes so much inflammation that is slowly destroying my body joints and organs. Stomach pain will not go away at all. Chronic gastritis, esophagitis, GERD and no matter what I eat, don’t eat, just bad. The pain and nauseous! I just don’t want that test where they put a tube in your nose to your stomach. I did the one where they placed a pill thingy and wore a halter monitor. That was two years ago, hope I don’t have to do again.. venting.. ty both!!
Feel better!!!
@@MyWorld-nt1sk I understand. Glad to be of help, as this is important information to be aware of. Also, the recovery itself should be less, than the full Nissen. Just make sure that you find a surgeon that does this. I will leave you a link to the study between original Nissen and the Toupet variant: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14717528
My mom had what was at least a similar surgery this morning. Her stomach was nearly all the way in her chest. She was lucky to eat about the equivalent of an egg without having issues. Other than that, nearly no pain. Doctors were amazed by that.
Thanks for posting this video. I am scheduled the end of the month for NF. I am so freaking scared. My anxiety has kicked in and I am making myself sick. I have watched so many videos and I have seen good and bad results.

I had my hiatal hernia surgery June 6, 2024. The first 4 days was very painful, but I chose not to use strong pain meds, only tylenol. I was on a clear liquid diet for 1 week and lost 11 pounds. I am on day 16 and I have lost 15 pounds. I am now eating a little more food but no fried or heavy foods. I am scheduled to followup with my dr in 2 days and will hopefully be going back to work. The pain for 4 days was terrible but the clear liquids was worse. Glad it is all over.

Had hernia repair surgery 8 years later. Fast forward 2018 ,I found out that I have a HIATAL HERNIA 😳That would explain the PAIN AND INTEstinal acid pain!
Lady Ghana I’m wondering if I have Hiatal hernia after my 3rd baby two years ago. What were your symptoms of the hiatal?
Anyone experience a lot of pain coming out of the anesthesia? It’s the morning after my surgery and it’s very painful. I was given morphine every couple of hours during the night but it’s hardly touched my pain. Just wonder anyone has had the same experience? Still waiting for the doctor to come in to talk to him, and the surgery was yesterday morning. Don’t let it scare you, just make sure your prepared. I knew there would be a pain but not like this
I experienced this last week. Everyone was acting confused about the amount of pain I was in.
Nurses/dr.s I mean. It was very frustrating.
I know this is an older video but thank you for doing these videos. I am scheduled and interested in the videos. However, the Drs not following up on your complaints is medical gaslighting! This always upsets me.
I had a TIF procedure two years ago. Was told it was OK as I only had a 1cm HH. Six months after the procedure my gerd was back. Fast forward a year after that and esophagram showed a 4cm HH. Surgery for my HH was two days ago (Thursday 4/21). Surgery went OK but I had some post op nausea and vomiting. Hoping that this didn't cause anything to go sideways. I'm on day 3 and still feeling pretty bad. So far, however, haven't experienced any GERD symptoms so fingers crossed.
That's a lot! I'm so sorry you're going through this!
@@GayleRobinson Hey Gayle kind of strange but I think I might have developed IST as a result of the surgery. When I did a search for that condition one of your videos came up! It's kind of a surprise because I've been very mindful of my heart health for the last 12 years or so. Are you still dealing with IST? I had read somewhere that it can be transient. I have an appointment with a cardiologist in a few weeks. Thanks, Brian

Hi I had surgery too it was bariatric and they fixed my hiatal hernia at the same time I’m having a pain right in the middle of my chest and I think it’s from my hernia repair I can’t eat mushy solids because it make my chest hurt... is that the same type of pain your having?
Hi! Did you have pain or just heart burn?
Do you have an arrhythmia?? Did the surgery help ?? 🥺
So for years I have had occasional issues where I have trouble swallowing... Feels like the food hits the spot between my breasts, and kind of gets stuck. Sometimes I vomit it back up, sometimes it eases and I'm good. I just recently switched Dr's and as I glanced through my medical records, I saw noted that I have a small hiatal hernia. After googling what it was, here I am. Is that what the difficulty swallowing feels like?
What other foods did you have in your liquid diet?? I’m about to have this surgery and just curious

I had bleeding in my belly button from what they thought was an umbilical hernia. I had to see a general surgeon and he did more testing and he was the one who found it.
I am going to have a large hiatal hernia repair soon. Did anyone have bloating as a side affect? What happens when(if) you have to vomit?
Thanks for your sharing experiance ..me i diagnosed with hiatal hernia ,GERD on top of this bad breath made me mad ..please can you share me your experiance regarding bad breath .thanks

Did you lose any weight because of the surgery and diet ?
Sandra Ard yes 20 pounds, but once you start eating again you gain it back. I’m currently walking every day, and trying to eat better. I’m down 13 pounds 🎉. Hoping to keep every pound off this time 😊

@@MaithaS how are you now?

Did you have to be a certain weight for the surgery, I have to get both done as well.
Hi, Gayle! How are you doing? Thanks for the video. Everything ok now after 4 years? Any updates or everything is holding up? Im thinking on having the cirurgy, i love to eat and GERD is turning my life a living hell..😢
Everything is still going great! Thanks for asking 😊
I also had the same operation on 25 th Jan 2021, pls tell in ur starting are u swallowing food with water because I am🥺🥺, and pls tell the exact time of full recovery
Again I answered your other three comments with it’s been a little bit over two years and it’s hard for me to remember everything. That’s why I recorded as much as I could while things were happening. If you are having problems I really suggest contacting your doctor. As I said before small sips of water. If I drink too much while I was eating I would feel like I was choking. Today February 16, 2021 I still drink very little while I’m eating I also do not drink with a straw. Small sips is my best suggestion small teeny bites of food also. Your body has changed and it’s going to take time for you to get used to it. You cannot eat as fast or drink as fast as he used to.
@@GayleRobinson 🙏🙏 thnks Gayle for ur wonderful explanation
Watching your video makes me feel better but im really scard to have this operation did your stomach go down how long did it take you to feel 100 Ty so much for sharing
yes it did, however I can't remember how long after. I'm pretty sure I talked about it in one of my updates.
Thank u
What happens if you need to vomit from food poisoning or infections?
Did the GERD give you constant bad breath?
I don’t think so 🤔 but I could be wrong ☺️
Praying for you
Thank you so much 😘 I am swallowing food now with no big issue 🙌🏼
Hey, I’m waiting for my manometry test to then have the NF. After the surgery they say you cannot be sick or burp again, is that the case? Can you drink alcohol once it’s done? Thanks in advance
I'm 20 months recovered now... I chose not to drink with a straw, and I no longer drink sodas. No one told me I had to I just made the choice to not go back. I also don't drink alcohol ( I never liked the taste so never started). Burping I think I started burping around the 1 year mark. or if I did burp it would hurt a tiny bit.
@@GayleRobinsonhow are you now. Can you eat anything
@@rekhasharma-jy8xh yes, everything is going great. I eat whatever I want now 😊
@@GayleRobinson Hi do you have any swallowing problems currently

Yes everything has been fine, I do have a small pain 🤷🏻♀️ getting that looked at today. Dr is doing a upper GI test.
@@GayleRobinson did you gain weight after losing it?
Just curious did your doctor tell you that you had to be at a certain weight limit before your Hiatel hernia surgery??
no
@@GayleRobinson Odd my doctor told me i had to be at 184 pounds for me to have the hiatel hernia surgery.
Hello Gayle, I couldn’t help but notice how hypermobile your hands are. I was wondering if you know about that and if you experience any pain. Thank you for making this video.
What does that mean???
Look into the Beighton score assessment test that can be found on line and done on your own. Depending on that you can ask to see a geneticist. May be helpful. Wish you all the best Gayle. I had my TIF surgery 5 days ago and I’m hungry lol
I have Ehlers Danlos and having this surgery Thursday
@@erindaugherty514 I do too. This surgery was by far the hardest surgery for me and I’ve had 8
@Life Happens wow. I'd never heard of this before. While I always knew I could "push" my knees in and I never thought much of it. I took the test and even things I straight up said 'I possibly couldn't do that!' I did with ease.
Then I researched the correlation between hypermobility and GERD symptoms!
Did you have shoulder bone pain?
Did you have any problems swallowing before you had the surgery
no
Why were you having trouble swallowing?
can you lift heavy weights?
Can you add sweeteners to your cream of wheat?
I'm so afraid Gayle. Where did you find the bone broth?
After recovery you’ll be forever grateful! I mean it’s been 1 year and I’m still very happy! The soup link: unjury.com/chickensoup-protein-container/
U had surgery 5dayd before i had ches pain and back pain its normal
Check with ur doctor
So how are you doing now? Thank you.
From this surgery I believe I'm doing good. I've gain my weight back, and I know that isn't helpful.
Which type of doctor specialize in hertial hernia surgery? I am not sure if it's a medical doctor who does this type of surgery.
General Surgeon
@@GayleRobinson Thank you.
I have this surgery scheduled with a thoracic surgeon.
I have did the last week... Please let me know how many days of dysphasia... In how many days it goes.. currently I am on soft diet
I’m wondering the same thing! Just had this done five days ago with the partial wrap and gallbladder removal as well. I start to panic when I feel like I can’t swallow/almost vomit since that’s the last thing the surgeon wants us to do! I had seven incisions, done by the davinci robot :)

@@GayleRobinson and Gayle pls tell did u swallow food with water at that time
@@mohitmehta4286 again two years ago it’s hard for me to remember everything today. I do remember teeny sips of water you cannot drink water like you used to. Still today I don’t drink much water or liquids while I am eating. If I do it gets really clogged up. It’s important to let your doctor know about these things as I am not an expert if you are having problems it’s best to contact your doctors office.

I would talk with your doctor.
Would you do it again? Are you able to throw up? If not what does it do to you if you can't?

I lost 20 pounds, but gained it all back once I was able to eat again.
