Joeli Vidiri - The pioneer Fijian Winger

- Joeli Vidiri was Scottie Pippen to Jonah Lomu. They playe together for Counties Manukau and the Blues. They had a lot of success. They were both wingers with power and speed. They led the revolution of wingers, who suddenly were big men that are the size and power of forwards, but have the balance and agility of small backs . They were pioneers, and led the way for guys like Rupeni Caucaunibuca, Lote Tuqiri, Joe Rokocoko, Sivivatu, Hosea Gear, Julian Savea and Frank Halai. If Jonah Lomu had played rugby in 2010, he would not have been so dominating and bulldozing, but because they were pioneers in an age of small 80kg backs, they shone bright and led the way for the next generation of wingers.
As shown in this documentary, Vidiri was struck down early by kidney disease just when he was breaking into the All Blacks.

What a legend. Joeli made me proud to be half Fijian when I was growing up. Not only a Great Fijian Winger, but one of the greatest Wingers I ever got to witness.
Me too brother.
you surely had your moment big Joe... thanks for the memories
The only player I can remember that would run a 100metres for a try whilst maintaining a smile the entire time
Any rara in Fiji around 5-8pm - many boys doing this everyday, even to this day mate.
the only player jonah lomu thought who was could give him a good go for his money
Yeah jonah had the and the size speed but joeli is also that good
0:41 best dive I've ever seen 😂
Rest In Peace champ
Although i admire JV i think there were two exceptional rugby wings b4 hin. One is Kini Nalatu who played for Counties when Bruce Robertson was just starting; the other is Paula Bale for Canterbury. Both did not reach ABs ststus like JV. There is also Bernie Fraser from Wellington who is of Fijian origin.
At least with Jonah you knew he would:
1. Feign a direct run
2. Perform a huge left swerve
3.Outrun you
4. Fend you
5. Run over the cover defence for the try/ look for the offload to the openside flanker.
Joeli was much more unpredictable.
People always underplay his size and strength.
SuperShelley08 .
.he was 190cm at around 110kg around the later 90s...with vunibaka speed...a freak show
A mate played fullback against him & Jonah. He rated Vidiri as the better of the two.
Size and strength? SPEED!
@@MrT67 interesting they were both that good. But still Jonah had the edge always in my oppinion.
@@greylynn-snakevenom113glc7 Jonah got to play more for the AB's because he was born in NZ and didn't have a 4 year stand down period. Kidney disease also hit Joeli a lot earlier. So he didn't get the exposure over a long period at the top level like Jonah.
I think he was the most fastest winger in his era,we never know how fast he is because his so big and fast...
woah! I didn't know that he played with Howlett!!
Isa OB Sa qai maumau dina ...one of the great Fijian Flyers...
vina valevu koica............one of the best fijian wingers of all time.

Thanks.
Vaqaqa tiko Kaivata, i qoi na vuravura ni disappointment, but human beings have their own structures. aloloma yane.
I think the video got cut short
Imagine what could have been! Man he was good, All Blacks material no doubt!
Aw so sad one of the many fijian new zealand rugby greats
Steroids ? Yu fuckin serious ? Maybe your fucked up if yu think it is, this guys is just back block hard working Fijian taka !
"They led the revolution of wingers, who suddenly were big men that are the size and power of forwards"
Erm... Bryan Williams? Va'aiga Tuigamala? Lolani Koko? Timo Tagaloa? IMO these guys were the pioneers of big wingers years before Jonah and Joeli burst on the scene.
nesianrugby I didnt know Bryan was a big winger. I do know Tuigamala was big even by todays standards though. I dont know of the others.
wish i could donate a kidney at that time.
vina 4levu koi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So sad..
