Joeli Vidiri - The pioneer Fijian Winger

  • Joeli Vidiri was Scottie Pippen to Jonah Lomu. They playe together for Counties Manukau and the Blues. They had a lot of success. They were both wingers with power and speed. They led the revolution of wingers, who suddenly were big men that are the size and power of forwards, but have the balance and agility of small backs . They were pioneers, and led the way for guys like Rupeni Caucaunibuca, Lote Tuqiri, Joe Rokocoko, Sivivatu, Hosea Gear, Julian Savea and Frank Halai. If Jonah Lomu had played rugby in 2010, he would not have been so dominating and bulldozing, but because they were pioneers in an age of small 80kg backs, they shone bright and led the way for the next generation of wingers.
As shown in this documentary, Vidiri was struck down early by kidney disease just when he was breaking into the All Blacks.

What a legend. Joeli made me proud to be half Fijian when I was growing up. Not only a Great Fijian Winger, but one of the greatest Wingers I ever got to witness.

Although i admire JV i think there were two exceptional rugby wings b4 hin. One is Kini Nalatu who played for Counties when Bruce Robertson was just starting; the other is Paula Bale for Canterbury. Both did not reach ABs ststus like JV. There is also Bernie Fraser from Wellington who is of Fijian origin.

At least with Jonah you knew he would:
    1. Feign a direct run
    2. Perform a huge left swerve
    3.Outrun you
    4. Fend you
    5. Run over the cover defence for the try/ look for the offload to the openside flanker.
    Joeli was much more unpredictable.
People always underplay his size and strength.

A mate played fullback against him & Jonah. He rated Vidiri as the better of the two.

@@greylynn-snakevenom113glc7 Jonah got to play more for the AB's because he was born in NZ and didn't have a 4 year stand down period. Kidney disease also hit Joeli a lot earlier. So he didn't get the exposure over a long period at the top level like Jonah.

Erm... Bryan Williams? Va'aiga Tuigamala? Lolani Koko? Timo Tagaloa? IMO these guys were the pioneers of big wingers years before Jonah and Joeli burst on the scene.
