    In this video, I compare the Boss HM-2w Waza Craft to a Boss HM-2 made in Japan, 2 HM-2s made in Taiwan, an Oliver HM-20 and a Decibelics Angry Swede V2.
    Only chainsaw sounds, because that's what this pedal and this reissue is all about.

      I think it could be cool to do a new axe fx video that replicates the HM-2W custom mode EQ curve.
      Especially because Fractal’s drive modeling has changed since your last video.

    I'm really liking the sound of the custom mode it's just more beefy and aggressive, I've got one of the HM-2W pedals on order can't wait to try it out also I'd like to see you running it through the MT-2W into the Peavey Bandit.

    Thanks Dome, I've been following you for a few months ever since I got my MIJ HM-2 and I've been waiting for this video! Thanks for the detailed analysis and comparison, I'm excited to try my HM-2w when it finally arrives.
    I was wondering if you had any tips on tightening up palm mutes while using the HM-2. I'm looking for best of both worlds I suppose with the chainsaw open power chords, but also cleaner and tighter metallic palm mutes. The closest I've come so far is running a FAS boost or tubescreamer type model into the HM-2 and turning the drive down on the HM-2 to almost 0. (I run my HM-2 in the Axe Fx II's FX loop so I can use fractal's digital pedals in front of it)
    I'm curious what your thoughts are and would love to see a video covering the subject of tightening up the low-end of the HM-2 for heavy palm muted stuff while still retaining most of the chainsaw sound. It seems like there could be multiple ways to approach this such as combining other pedals with the HM-2, automation/controllers on the Axe Fx, multiband compression or dynamic eq, ect. I might be chasing an impossible tone, but it seems like I'm getting pretty close and I would love to see you take a crack at it.
    Thanks for all the content, keep it up!
    *fixed I meant dynamic eq or multiband compression

    Finally getting to comment on this great video. The Waza is a respectable alternative to the OG HM2. Have you seen the God City HM2 shoot out with the guy from Trap Them, Dome? I like that comparison video but I think this is better. Every single variable and control is dialed. Once again, great video Dome 🤘

      HM-2w is still on the wishlist… mainly there because I got a superhyper fuzz pedal instead. 😬
      However, thanks to you I’m now very disappointed by the noise floor of the HM-2w. 🤷‍♂️
      So… I’m wishing for maybe something else now! 😂🙈

    As I said at the HM2CULT video, sounds 1:1 enough for me. The HM2w does have a little more of that hollow upper mid boxy thing and a bit more treble going on compared to the original. The only other thing that I could see that the HM2w could have as an issue is the SLIGHTLY higher volume but it is really not that much more than the original and as you have shown before, even HM2s from the same era are mildly different, even ones from the same year.
    Willing to bet that in a blind test with a full band mix that almost no one would be able to tell the difference. Maybe you could do that for a video for the HM2w. I personally love blind tests the best because they remove the mysticism and falsehoods people think are real in the gear world.
    I honestly only bought mine since it is likely to fail like the original run did. I guess the nice thing is I can keep my MIJ safe at home. Although, it is not often that Boss pedals ever break.

    Have you ever tried the Zoom TM-01 Tri Metal? It was one of Zoom's premium analog pedals (made in Japan) released in early 2000's (now long discontinued). It is an interesting pedal as it has a range knob which allows you to alter the frequency range of the mids control. Some people swear it is the ultimate Death Metal pedal. I would love to see you get your hands on one of those and see if it can chainsaw!

    I'd love to see you superimpose the pink noise freq output display over audio of the what the changes sound like on the guitar signal - then we can hear what changes in the display sound like in real life, which really helps understand the characteristics of a pedal and how different parameters affect the sound.

    What other pedals would this work well with? Maybe run two amps in stereo, one got standard chugg distortion and the other got the waza, find out the perfect blend, don't be afraid to use EQ either pedals either, maybe do a stream of just tryin different things out, I don't know. Whatever ya do I'll be here.

    Hey Dome, much respect on your work and this review! Can I ask (and apologies if this is a recurring question or you've already covered it!) But have you tried the relatively obscure Boss DF-2 ? A variant of the DS-1 I assume to see if it chainsaws? Cheers

  • @NickSwe
    @NickSwe Před 2 lety +3

    imo, people claiming that a clone is better than a Waza for getting as close as possible to an original simply can't tweak the thing, there are many pedals out there to choose from, most of them will get the job done with a good tweaking and the Waza version is no different, and if someone really wants to get the exact Entombed/Dismember sound then the equipment used is a big part of it, you know, Peavy amp/HM-2, cause the overdrive of the original didn't really sound that good with other amps actually, and also Tomas at Sunlight studios blended the chainsaw-ed guitars with another pedal/combo, then tweaked it all on his board to finally get "the" sound, so, to sum it up, nobody will ever actually recreate the original sound properly without spending thousands of bucks in equipment, crying for small variations in the sound of all these pedals is kinda useless, they are all unique and yet a good tweaking will make them all sound almost the same. Is the Waza a good pedal to get the chainsaw sound? yes it is.

  • @EvilBlakey

    Nice vid! I was holding out for the HM-2w because I was told the Custom mode moves the bass center frequency down to ~60Hz, making it better for downtuned and bass guitars, but unfortunately your spectrum analysis doesn't support those claims. Can you confirm or deny whether the HM-2w is better for bass guitar than the original? Or am I better off with a Wurm (or the new Guardian) or something else? Cheers!
    Edit: Bass demo please! :D

    • @DomeNightbearer
      @DomeNightbearer  Před 2 lety

      If I would use a chainsaw pedal for bass, I would buy one with a blend control for sure 🤷‍♂️
      That being said, the HM2w has indeed more bass in custom mode.

    Stupid question. It's louder, but is it due to the difference of the expected input voltage?
    IIRC the original HM2 expects 12v. Maybe WC tries to give the same results with 9v.
