    I remember John Peel playing this over several nights on his late show in the '70s, in amongst the punk, new wave and others. Great times.

    Life can be divided in two periods: before you hear Kevin Burke and after you hear Kevin Burke. Simple as that.

      Back in the 70s I loved British and Irish folk music. How the hell did I never hear of this guy? Oh well, better late than never.

    Kevin has said that he studied classical violin and Irish traditional music at the same time. One characteristic of his playing is that is up bows are just as strong as his down bows, so he often starts tunes on an up bow. That amazing bow technique powers his perfect rhythm and his exquisite tone.

    I remember when I bought this album on vinyl. It was so exciting. You would usually hear a review on The Long Note on RTÉ and that would really whet your appetite.
    Even the cover was revolutionary for its time. Mulligan Records brought modern graphic design to Irish albums. It’s still one of my favourite covers. Not to mention the incredible playing and arrangements. From the golden age of Irish music.

    Sometimes you come to youtube looking for something specific. Sometimes you're looking for something general. Regardless of what intentions brought you here, if you're lucky you'll stumble upon a previously unknown gem that sticks with you long term.

      Or rediscover something that set yer heart racing 20 years ago and reminds you that your true purpose in life is to play beautiful music. I got this album off my uncle maybe 6 months to a year too late to realise my destiny in life. This and Matt molloys stony steps were two fantastic recordings my wonderful late uncle gave me. My biggest regret in life so far is not getting together and learning tunes from him and jamming with him. I can only ask him to send me them and help me on the spirit level now.

  • @tbladon1
    @tbladon1 Před 13 lety

    @gillieduncannon You can find them if you buy the CD (which I did long ago). The first and last are the same, "Toss the Feathers". My personal favorite is "The Hunters Purse". It's the bad myxolidian tune towards the end with the pipes. Or just go to the store and look at the CD and write down the name of the tunes. They're all great and some are probably in the Fiddler's Fakebook.
