Thank you _so_ much for making this video! There are not many videos encapsulating the quality and effectiveness of practice mutes, but this video goes above and beyond! In general, a massive thanks for making videos; I find it very inspiring and useful to hear in detail about playing the French horn from someone at this high a level of playing, and thoroughly admire your enthusiasm :D
Sean Whelan Sean! You’re amazing! Thank you :)
I love the french horn
I play the horn too and is amazing
i play the horn also
me to
the tags in the bottom right during the audio test have the mix engineer in me so pleased 😁
I'm glad! Had to make sure I let everyone know what is happening behind the scenes for such an important test! It also helps show why there is a gain boost once my voice comes back. Or I'd be much too quiet!
**sighs** I still wish I could play the French horn. Your playing is an example of why I want to play it so bad
Maybe one day, you will find your way back to the horn!
@@FhornPatrick hopefully... my parents wouldn't let me do band when I was going into 6th grade, and so I chose orchestra over choir (for obvious reasons of the fact I wanted to try something new and possibly difficult) even though I was already good at singing (this is why I went into theatre) and so I went into orchestra, playing violin out of spite for my parents who wanted me to do cello XD

Talking is hard sometimes
I met Mr Balu, really great guy. I’ll have to buy a mute or two when horn of plenty finally calls
see, this is what I need. I was trying to find a review that I trust for practice mutes, and this is awesome!
Hmm this is cool I’ve been using the Yamaha Silent brass and I spent way too much on it and I barely use the earbuds on it so I’m really intrigued in this
Is silent brass worth it? I am looking forward to buy it, so I just want to know..
Danggg that difference was so crazy, I might get one!
You HAVE to hear it in person. Even making that review, I hadn’t played the mute that day. And when I played the straight mute I was thinking, shoot is it going to be that much quieter? YUP!
@@FhornPatrick I'll definitely check one out! It's really good for principal assitant horn players when they have to come in on a high note lol I could've used it in the 3rd horn solo in Der Rosenkavalier
I love French horn I played it for one year and also got in a solo competition
Amazing! French horn is the best.
I really love The Marksman!!!
Thanks for the tip!
I got an anon noise complaint from one of my neighbours lol (I live in a house so no shared walls or anything) but they claimed they were pro musician but spelt bass wrong and suggested I go somewhere 30 minutes away to practice...
Wow! In your own house!? I have had someone leave a note when I lived in a townhouse. However the only time I received a note was when I accidentally left the window open.
I’ve played French Horn for 7 years and am going to college next year and will continue playing. However, I’m losing my straight mute as it belongs to my band directors. Any recommendations for a straight mute on the lower end of the price spectrum?
That mozart horn concerto 1 2nd movment though!
My 8th grade private lessons teacher gave me the entire thing! So suprised to hear it!
Good old page 3
I've been looking for a practice mute for so long! But do you have any budget friendly options? Is a wood mute superior? Could it cut sound if it is metal?
Thank you for sharing :)) Would you tell me please if you tried the Yamaha SB-3x-2 mute? Is it better then this one or worse. I really appreciate your help. Best regards from Germany!
My colleague gave me to play once on balu practice mute. It's incredible how good it is.
But the price....
09.09.2022 practice mute range from 240 - 400 $
When I first moved into my apartment, I bought a Yamaha Silent Brass. Those things are wonderful, but they're very expensive. It seems like this would be a great option too
I had the silent brass for a few days but I just couldn’t get used to the tin sound so I returned it after a couple days. That was in maybe 2014?
@@FhornPatrick They've redesigned them since then. (They did trumpet and trombone in 2014, but it took ours a little longer to release, iirc.) I have the old version, which I disliked and no longer use -- not just due to the sound, but the back pressure. I wish I had a new one to try out. Supposedly it is night and day as far as how free blowing it is, but I'd have to see it to believe it. And the electronics are supposed to be more natural sounding too. I imagine the tinny sound comes from them really not being designed to use without the electronics, though I often used the mute without them anyway.
Its a suppressor for a horn
Bang! and the sound is gone!
How did you hear about Ion Balu and his company? I met him at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago last year. Do you live close to IL?
What song is he playing
Mozart Horn concerto No. 1
I did not make my high school top band. I am first chair on second. I thought I played my etudes to perfection
I’m sorry to hear that! This just means that we know there are some things to work on. This has happened to me lots! Not getting in just means that we can work harder and try again. Time to prove some people wrong!
i play the french horn for 1 year now and i still cant play it
Keep practicing!
I've been playing cornet for a year and I love it more than ever, but it's the hardest instrument I've tried so far.
Just accept that it's tough to hold the embouchure and keep working at it. It's frustrating when the notes fall apart and you end up playing whole chords instead of single notes, but when it comes together it's gorgeous.
Keep going! I wasn’t good after my first year but I put the petal to the metal and achieved 1st chair in All-District. Just keep going and soon it will be you sitting in the 1st chair slot!
I’m at about a year too. You really have to power through the bad days, use a tuner, follow an agenda, buzz on the mouthpiece, etc. don’t skip lip day (which is every day).
Man don’t worry when I first started horn I was Literally put in a room and given a book and then my teacher just left and I had to learn on my own, back then if I was asked if I like my instrument or if I would continue it I would say no. In the long end I pushed through and Eventually got private lessons in high school and then I skyrocketed , I gained a new love for the instrument and I decided that this will be my career many years Later I’m in college pursuing horn and I love it
Hey man where are the new videos??
Great video! Thank you!
patrick do you have any experience with the yamaha silent brass systems?
I’m going into my 3 year of f horn I’m in band btw
Just take my money :D
