    I use dyes and stains at times and I put them in a plastic spray bottle to apply it. Spray it on wipe it off. Works pretty well.

    The dark mantle matches the dark around the fireplace nicely. It unifies the overall look. Great job.

    Nice piece of work. Interesting method of attachment. It looks very good. I have no comment on the color except that I think it looks nice. I'm all out of snide remarks, sorry. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe. 🙂🙂

    Well, I don't like coloring or dying any woods, but in the case of oak, the ammonia fuming is nice, and the wood grain tends to show through better. Maybe the vinegar and steel wool might work also. Not sure. I have only seen the end results of these processes, and haven't used them myself.

    Nice woodworking job! Too bad the stain ruined it. Wouldn't the client want to match the stain to the existing wood in the rest of the house? Looks really bad!

    I thought you’d get it to its final stained color using vinegar and steel wool. Especially with how effective it is on white oak.

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  Před měsícem

      On the test that did not get as dark as was wanted. And it tends to be more blotchy on rough wood.

    When obtaining reclaimed wood, or free lumber, how do you control for bugs? I’m worried about bringing bugs into my shop or accidentally selling an infested piece of furniture.

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  Před měsícem +1

      I don't worry about it that much. Usually the lumber will sit in my garage or someplace else for a while before it comes to the shop and I just inspect it before bringing it in. You'll see small piles of sawdust under the wood if there are any bugs. In that case you treat it with Borax or put it in a kiln and that'll take care of him. But up here in the north we have another option. Just leave it outside the winter and that will take care of it.

    Did you do anything to ensure that the two flats on the end are in the same plane along the length of the beam?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  Před měsícem

      Yes. That's why I was using the whining sticks.

    • @pettere8429
      @pettere8429 Před měsícem

      @@WoodByWrightHowTo that only takes care of the twist, you could still have a bow. (Both flats slanting towards or away from the middle of the beam.)

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  Před měsícem

      I see what you're saying. That is judged by looking down the corner of the beam and you can make sure that one line matches up with the other one.

    is that stain alcohol based? I noticed that in the US there are multiple products that are called stain and they are all on different basis, while we have only one "stain" that happens to be alcohol based, and every other product has different name based on what the primary solution is.

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  Před měsícem

      Most stains in the US are oil-based. Usually if it's alcohol based it's called a dye here but there are a lot of other bases depending on how you want it to absorb.

    Never support Jamie! He did a video on the Veritas low-angle block plane vs. DX60, and then he had the audacity to tell me about the NX60 in the comments. He is all but ensuring I spend every dollar I have on CIHI. He is an enabler!😤 (I hope its obvious that I'm joking😂)

    So really what's holding it up is the screws that hold the short 2X4 studs to the longer 2X4 that you attached to the wall? Seems kind of weak to me.
    And I would run any screws from the bottom to be better hidden.
    But I'm no pro.

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  Před měsícem +1

      No there are lag screws running through. I mentioned in the video that I didn't get a chance to show them. Sometimes you don't get every clip when you're shooting it.

    When it comes to instructional videos, dramatic fancy low angles and lots of movement don't help. It's distracting.
    This is about woodworking, not about artistic filming. Maximise clarity, minimise distraction.
