even aside from the really horrific context and lyrics of this song, I think there's something so fascinating about how just through the right combinations of volumes and pitches and discordant noises , a musician can hit this spot in the human brain that activates such primal terror and discomfort. it's really so amazing.

This sounds like the inner world of the hamburger lady. The siren and motor sounds are the traumatic memories of the ambulance rushing her to the hospital after the accident and the repeating "hamburger lady" represents the contempt of the nurses and the shame that her predicament is causing her. This song is not based on a real event, it's based off a poem by Blaster Al Ackerman but it's still very unnerving to imagine

Some backstory, apparently it's about a lady who was burned so bad on the top part of her body no one could stand to look at her or stay with her. They described her upper body as if you put meatloaf in an oven and crushed it up (idk something like that) but pretty meaty or something. So pretty much it was like a doctor describing her.
The qualified technicians are people who can stand to look at her and change her tubes etc, and there is a lack of them.

Since I’ve heard two versions of “Hamburger Lady” back-to-back, I now consider the live version from Thee Psychick Sacrifice to be the creepiest version of this song. And the reason I say this comes down to two main elements: the horn and the lack of melody.
When I went back to hear the original song, I noticed the horn itself had a tremolo effect. And while I will say the original version is disturbing, the effect on that horn stands out like a sore thumb and, in my opinion, hampers the overall experience. It sounds either like a sheep that has diarrhea or a turtle that is getting it on with a shoe. As for the version featured on, because it was recorded live, along with primitive quality of the recording itself, it complements the already disturbing song and overall creates a more immersive experience.
As for my second point, when I mean that “Hamburger Lady” lacks melody, I mean that the lyrics are spoken throughout the song instead of being sung. Compare this song to other songs made by bands such as Nine Inch Nails, Korn, Ministry and Alice in Chains. And while they feature themes and subject matter that are comparable, if not darker than Throbbing Gristle’s most notorious song, what makes them less disturbing, to me, is that they’re sung in a melodic manner. I’m not sure why, but the sense of theatrics that comes from singing lyrics from songs like Joy Division’s “Day of the Lords” make them more digestible to me. But it’s one thing to make them digestible to the listener, it’s another to find an escape through those songs. But in “Hamburger Lady,” there is no escape throughout the song, as you have no choice but to hear observations from the technicians, as well as mockery that comes with it. And the way Genesis delivers the song’s lyrics, it’s delivered in a more conversational manner and gives the impression the titular character is remembering specific sentences and insults the technicians have uttered. With this considered, the lack of melody acts as the center of the song, not only accompanying the dissonant sounds and anxiety-ridden atmosphere, but also making the live version more complete.
On a side note, I love how the comment section on this video is not only comprised of sincere comments regarding the song’s disturbing content, but also people that are fooling around with the song’s title. If that is not the Internet for you, then I don’t know what is! LOL

The original with the broken-up vocals, and the heartbeat drumbeat in the background and the more “grinding” synth drone is the version that’s more harrowing to me. Alright. After years of trying out weird abstract music, this is definitely the most intense. This hits in the psychological sense.
Pretty much I see this as One by Metallica with the intensity multiplied a thousand times. The main reason I see we enjoy One as a song is because the song itself makes no attempt to form a connection between the story and song. We see it as a hard rockin ballad, and forget about the meaning of the song completely. This here is basically the equivalent of the Caretaker, using sounds to paint a narrative violently. It's impossible to disconnect the music and story from each other. The fact that this is all very real unlike say, a Carcass song used to describe a realistic fictional scenario makes it the most uncomfortable listen I've had with a song.

‘I made contact with Blaster Al Ackerman. He'd been a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, so he became a medic. The trauma of what he saw was so disturbing that he subsequently found it really hard to fall asleep because he had such nightmares. He worked as a nurse in a hospital in Isle of Portland on the burn ward because he was really the only one who could cope with those injuries, having also dealt with them during the war. One of his patients he nicknamed "the Hamburger Lady." The words to my later song "Hamburger Lady" are exact quotes from his letter about the woman, who had been in a car crash and been stuck in the car while it was burning, 1:11 leaving her eyes and ears burned, blind, and deaf. She was trapped in this mutilated body, unable to speak or hear or see, not knowing what had happened to her. She just woke up, trapped in this body, in the dark, in pain, for the rest of her life. Trying to get my head around what that would be like resulted in the song. Al was truly and genuinely disinterested in being recognized, or in gal-leries, or anything else’ - quote by the songwriter, Genisis P-Orridge from his memoir

This used to scare me in the 80's! Listened to it in a friend's dark basement! I was allowed to leave though... lol.

This might sounds weird, but once you listen to this for a few times, it isn't scary. Makes good background music to work on

Today i had the perfect idea of playing this after listening to Frankie Teardrop and i have the feeling that the next Song will be one of the Swans. The dessert of my "SundayAudioMindfuckMenue" will maybe be a little, nice Foetus Song. Awesome 🖤😄

It's ambient song, like Enya's "carribbean blue" , I think that Enya's"Caribbean blue is cover version of TG's "Hamburger lady", because it's a same genre-ambient ! "Domino Dancing" of "Pet Shop Boys is the cover version of Suicide's "Frankie Teardrop", because it's a same genre-synthpop !!! No fear, just relaxxx!!! Right, right!!!

I think the song is so scary to represent the "hamburguer lady" horror when she was being burned alive. When i heard this song for the first time i legit cried, something not even a horror movie ever did to me, and it still scares me so much til nowdays.

The song starts after her burns were acquired, and represent her experience in the hospital.

Such a sweet song. I sing it to my newborn at night. She's a good girl. Always asleep and doesn't demand too much. Actually, she doesn't demand anything. Last time we fed her was 2 weeks ago. :)

Some people have villain songs. Others have songs that even other villains would be scared to hear in their own minds. The type of songs that villain songs would check under the bed for. The villain to other villain songs.
