The Clark Sisters’ “You Brought The Sunshine” Caused Controversy Within The Church | Unsung

- Being raised in a strict religious household, it was shocking to many that The Clark Sisters were branching out from traditional gospel to sounds that reached a wider audience. Watch the special Easter edition of #UNSUNG Sun 9/8C. Visit tvone.tv/ for more.

I think it’s absolutely crazy how the church didn’t accept the fact that they crossed over and was reaching people outside of the church I thought that was what we were called to do 🤔🤔
Right
Live in this world... not be of it. Crossover is not the problem... it is the future compromising and contaminating of the message. Look how watered down the message is in the gospel music today.
Amen
Exactly smh
That's how goofy and stoopid they are!!! But don't talk about white supremacy!!😁SAD!!
This Clark Sisters Controversy is what paved the way for the John P. Kee’s, Kirk Franklin’s, J. Moss (OBVIOUSLY), and all other Gospel artists after them.
If we also bring super real, they paved the way for Mint Conidtion, tony tone, and pretty much all RNB acts of the 90s. Listen to the composition of the music for similarities.
you're forgetting Mary Mary. They are a huge part of bringing the Gospel artists to mainstream charts
Medy Lema Productions not forgetting, but the should be mentioned.
Exactly
J.T. Robins ....Remember Walter and Edwin Hawkins with “Oh Happy Day “????
Dorinda is so pretty
Right?? She's beautiful
Absolutely stunning!!!
Did she even age ?
What’s amazing is that she looks exactly the same at now 62
she’s gorgeous
The Church: We don't want your music.
Also the Church: We don't want the world to have your music either.
TruCentrinoTech You can't win. I was raised in the church but I always asked these same questions as a child. Luckily my mom was open minded enough to explain.
@@keepitfrankwithfentse Can you help open my mind, with what your mom explained?
But we want your tithes and offerings that you can give from the money you make on the music.....SMH
TruCentrinoTech COGIC was upset because the Clark Sisters was becoming bigger than them but yet bringing souls to Christ
TruCentrinoTech holy rollers and hypocrites in the church... tax free dodge too... I said it...
I love when Dorinda imitates their mother 🤣🙏🏾
“How can you write Gospel music, and you have all these worldly people buying your music?”
Uhhhhhh, ISN’T THAT THE POINT????
Sheesh...leave it to the church to stand in the way of its own message.
Facts facts facts 😂😭
The Church is giving exactly the message it wants. It is man that confuses that message with the true Word.
@@44akaladd The church is just a building.
44akaladd I’m tracking with you, but break it down a little more.
@@brentduanefoster It is my understanding that the 'christian' church was established to spread the teachings of Christ. The two 'testaments' are before and after collections of guides and instruction for how to live in a manner which would be pleasing to God and provide for the afterlife.
The 'New Testament' or covenant (the after the birth of the Christ) is meant to supercede the old. Both were written in a combination of Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic. English had not even been invented yet. Anyone that speaks more than one language knows how difficult it can be to translate anything and keep the meaning and the words exact from one language to another. So immediately error is introduced.
Evidenced by all the different christian sects that exist now - each decided the words as written meant something significantly different.
Personally I read very little Greek and no Hebrew or Aramaic at all and have never been blessed to read the original texts. I know there was significant socio-political influence attached to the King James translation (which has at least 4 variations to my knowledge) and multiple other translations available.
Again, I personally don't know which one is closest to the original and am cynical enough to not completely trust any of them even though I know many do.
I do acknowledge that many believe it is the exact and true Word where I believe it is the documentation of another man's interpretation and anytime it represents any belief other than loving one another is the greatest commandment of all, to me it is suspect.
I too, am just a man, but this is what I believe. God loves me. I love God and do my best to love all my fellow men.
Probably more than you wanted to hear but I hope it explains my point.
I love the way Dorinda said "The Money" 😆
Me too hahaha
I've always loved the tone of Dorinda's voice (speaking or singing). I'm so looking forward to watching the movie tonight.
Yessss
right!
She's my absolute "favorite Clark sister"! :)
Them songs was sowing seeds in their spirits I’m sure a few ppl got saved off that
Amen!
Exactly
Yes, their songs brought me through some tough times as a girl, hearing you brought the sunshine still brings me to tears
Amen coming from one raised in Islam. I love gospel music!
Its so sad how the church did not accept that song because I bet you so many people got to know about God because of that song! I remember when hated on Kirk Franklin when added hip hop to his music but at the end of the day the norm wont reach the people the un norm will!! That song is still a blessings and one of my favorites from The Clark Sisters!
Roise Joram I cant with church folks sometimes smh
No where in scripture does Jesus use music to reach people. Jesus used the word of God. That is what reaches people and brings about changes in peoples lives. Music just makes you feel good for a moment. When the song ends, after while, so will that good feeling. But God's word is everlasting. Jesus the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). His wheel does not need recreating to reach people. People dancing in the club to a song are not thinking about God. And anyone who has been to a club can vouch that statement.
It's simple. Folks hate change.
@@sarahp.3772 I've never been to a club where any single gospel track was played and JESUS is NOT the Messiah's name! It's YESHUA!
@James Thompson You're creating an entirely different argument. Yes, music should be in the church because God assigned people to be singers and to play instruments. No, holy music is not a sin because David played the harp and unclean spirit name out of King Saul. "In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God". John 1:1. "And the word became flesh and dwelt among us." (John 1:14).
Gospel is suppose to reach the people outside of the church !! 🤦🏽♀️
Amen the clark sisters did that
Facts
Amen!

Damn...Dorinda aging like fine wine.
Right black don't crack
"Ma'am we would pay you whatever you wont" Love Dorinda's southern twang.

Can’t wait! Already got it timed and set on my DVR!
Ashley Nicole Watched it! Loved it!!!!
Ashley Nicole oh no I missed it 😫
It’ll still come on Lifetime every once in a while. Really want it on DVD so I can watch it anytime
In Detroit this song was first played in the night clubs and skating rinks and that's what started me to attending church and I thank you sisters for using your gift to bring me in from the cold .
God knows how to reach you right where you are!
What twinky said is why church leaders will never be like jesus
ThatGuyyZeus That’s why I always say,
“It wasn’t the sinners that wanted Jesus dead.”
That's not true can people change
AJWH AMTHY Yeah, but with the Church, it often takes a very LOOOOONG time.
The church treats change like a Sunday morning service, always late, and staying longer than necessary.
Amen!!!!
Brent Foster 🤣
The radio station may not have played it but my grandma played the vinyl off that record 😆
WBMX and WGCI in Chicago played the hell out of this record and not just on Sunday

FACTS. You Brought The Sunshine was the first record I remember my mother playing
I'm pretty sure that I grew up in a black family but I've never heard of this group until yesterday.....😐 I am interested in watching this episode nonetheless!😁
@@winsbeyond8295 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Not all black people are Christians so think again.
My pastor use to say you have to catch a fish before you can clean it, what’s wrong with the church today is we expect people to come in already saved and speaking in tongues. Whether we like to admit it or not music draws people and after they’re at the church it’s then the pastor job to teach and preach the Word that will then want the people to make a change.
Now THATS a good saying. In gonna take that one through the rest of my life!
Yes!! I love that saying!!
"You have to catch a fish, before you can clean it." .....Whew!!!!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
The best Gospel Sisters of Detroit and the entire world I love all of them
If u are a Christian artist and worldly people are buying ur music that is amazing because that means that they feel something in ur music that they ain't finding in worldly music so glory to God and that's the whole point that u want ur music to reach those lost souls
Man, the church has come a long way from these closed minded times. Thank God! Thank God for artists like The Clark Sisters who pioneered and pushed through those barriers and waded through those unchartered waters to make Jesus known to souls who otherwise would not have know Him. Jesus was criticized the very same way for eating and drinking sitting and spending time with sinners. He came for the lost. He said it is the sick who need the physician, not the well, so bravo to The Clark Sisters reflecting Jesus in the way they did. God bless
The church folk had it all wrong! They were/are supposed to follow the teachings of Yeshua by going out and bringing the knowledge to the lost, scared and confused. It's rather moot calling oneself a Saint or Christlike, if one is not following His example. A lot of people found their way into the doors of higher knowledge and Christ because of those who dared to not judge others but instead, they ministered them through 'the word', wisdom and song.
COZmique ME Exactly!
COZmique ME Preach!
YESHUA!!!!!!
Totally agree 💯
Right. That song probably influenced people to go to church and give their lives to Jesus Christ!!!
Dorinda so pretty
Dorinda is absolutely gorgeous 😍
There was also controversy when "Oh Happy Day" came out by Edwin Hawkins in 1967. Many Baptist churches including the one I grew up in, would not sing that song. I was very young but I remember the church elders having a fit.
Isn't that something? A song that for many is THE gold standard for Gospel.
@@Arkansas86 Yes. The church elders said that there was too much hip "swiveling" when people were singing that song. This "hip action" was observed when they saw the choirs at other churches singing. One mother of the church said that people were too happy singing "Oh Happy Day". I kid you not!! 😑
@@diva70smusic ain't that the Point??!!!
They had a problem with “Oh Happy Day” but no problem with “Amazing Grace” 🙄🙄🙄🙄 ?!?!
@@cehayes74 Yes. This was 1967. What was considered Gospel music then is vastly different from now. Baptist churches (and others) did not like songs with a modern or fast beat, songs that were played on non gospel radio stations, or songs of edification. The choirs sung mostly hymns from an approved songbook from the main governing board.
"Amazing Grace" is considered a classic hymnal sung in Baptist and Methodist churches since 1779. Even though the author was a slave owner, it hard to find musicians, artists, writers, scholars and the like from that era who were not. Some people have problems with the Bible, especially the King James version. He was the head of the Church of England. He didn't write any of the Bible, it was written in dedication to him. There are other translations that invite controversy e.g., The New World Translation, the Reader's Digest Bible, and the Living Bible among others.
This is why it is necessary to worship and to have Bible study. Godly scholars can help us understand the words of Christ. We can still sing the songs and read the Bible understanding we are worshipping and praising the Lord, not the authors. We cannot rewrite or change history. Moving forward we can hope not to repeat the same mistakes. It is hard to be a believer in confusing and trying times. We must always keep the faith🙇🏽♀️🙇🏽♀️!! Not
I'm a believer and I've seen churches become the biggest cults and clubs. Jesus" mission was never tied to four walls for select people.
That last sentence 👍🏽
Danggone right
You said it so well. I feel this way also. It's all "in" the relationship with our father.
I'm having an all-day Clark Sisters videos marathon in anticipation of TONITE!!!! The movie is finally here. Can y'all believe it?
That's my favorite song they made
That song was my grandma’s favorite song ! RIP grandma 💕Brings back memories from my childhood.
I don't care, say what'cha want, these women are Legendary!! There will NEVER be another group of women as Iconic & diverse as these women were & are! What Gospel group you know getting played in clubs?!?! I'll wait! 😭🤷🏾♂️
Mary Mary did with "God in Me", but I get where you were going.
The Lyons Legacy Kirk Franklin's Stomp was played in the clubs and Go Get It from Mary Mary. And maybe even some others. But I believe You Brought The Sunshine was first. And I loved it and still do.
I've never understood the mentality Twinkie mentioned people having around 2:20. If church & gospel music was only for church people then how would sinners be exposed to Christ?
SportsSpeak73 I agree whole heartedly!
I agree , the Clark sisters music and their talent needed to be seen and listen to
everywhere not only in church .
Yep I remember this but they weren’t the only ones !!! Deniece Williams caught it for “They Say” & Alicia Myers as well for “Thank You” which didn’t make any sense at all !!!
Don't forget Kirk Franklin with stomp and revolution
francheska landfair Yep 👍🏽 True Dat !!!
They sound like angels 👼🏾 I just love them.
Yeah I'm from Brooklyn, and I remember this song playing on WBLS here in New York as a small child back in the day. So the story about Frankie Crocker playing the song is on point.
Since that I have found Christ there has been such a change in my life.❤I LOVED THIS SONG A LONG....TIME❤😊
Sometimes those church folks forget why our Master, Jesus Christ came to this Earth. He came for those that were demon possessed, sick, needy, unsaved, and the list goes on. Unfortunately, there are still church folks that don't want to be around worldly people, but God wants we Christians to minister to the worldly. I'm not a saint, and have fallen many times, but God. Love the Clark Sister's and Pace Sisters, too.
The notion that only church people should be the ones listening to gospel music is completely ludacris and completely not bible. Jesus sat at the table with sinners and tells us clear as day "I came not to call the righteous but the sinners for repentance." These church folks be so holier than thou, acting just like the Pharisees.
Reginald Evans that’s why I always say,
“It wasn’t the sinners that wanted Jesus dead.”
PRAISE THE LORD these Clark Sisters broke BARRIERS !!!! Thank y’all for using yo gifts !
I grew up with my mom blasting this record it’s one of my favorites and will continue to be forever
Twinkie is a legend she is a gem. Pls give her her flowers 💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐 we love the Clark Sisters
This was my favourite song and the first gospel Album I ever bought ❤️🙏🏽
The way the Clark Sisters were treated by the church, is one reason why I don't go back to the church and why people of the world have a hard time trusting the church. In particularly, the black church.
Those strict rules were not God rules, they were rules by man.
Let the church say Amen!

Wow. Welcome! I learned how to walk in the 80s because I wanted to dance to their songs!
mattbynumfilms omg 😂 well you know now
@@LeeLee-pw1qg Really? Legends.
Why would church Ppl be mad that their music was reaching the World’s ears when they were talking about Jesus? Do you know how many ppl must have gotten saved off of that 🤦🏽♀️
and then the same happened with Kirk and Stomp🙄 people are so adverse to change its crazyyy
It's "worldly people" that need to hear the message. The message is for saints AND sinners alike....
Dorinda is so beautiful❤️
I remember Harold Washington died in Chicago and this being played at his funeral. This was early to mid 80s. Fell in love with the song as a very young child then
It actually surprises me that alot of people don't seem to recall that this is something that happens with every generation in church or otherwise. Its typically an issue with the older generation when the next one starts bringing in the new.
Wow! I had no idea, and that was the 1st song that I remembered the most. Such a blessing to learn of their story from lifetime
Legendary Song, legendary group! Unbelievable singers, wonderful performers!
Still one of my favorite songs to this day!!!😇💖💚
My favorite song from the Clark sisters. Still listening to it weekly!
I will always love The Clark Sisters and their beautiful blessed music!!
That speaks to the corruption within the church, that they want to withhold gospel music from the general public is disgusting, Im not christian or catholic but I grew up listening to gospel music BECAUSE of ppl the Clark Sisters, CeCe Winans, Aretha Franklin and soo many more women
I see that is a good thing when "worldly" people can connect with spiritual music.
Their ALL BEAUTIFUL!
Let me say this to you marvelously talented Ladies i love your Family Unity and the way y'all sang... Im not even into the religion but i will play this song because its so uplifting.
How often is "but the church wasn't ready" the answer?
Brycen McCrary FAR TOO OFTEN. As it was in the days of Thomas Dorsey, who was a jazz and blues musician before he became the “Father of Gospel Music”. That SAME church had the same mentality.
The paper paper $$$$ such powerful vocals I was 7and getting chills from the vocals
How close-minded of the church to only want to keep gospel music to that themselves and not spread the word. Shouldn’t the church meet people where they are and deliver them from there. Is this not “spreading the good news.” This is one of the reasons why some people just don’t fool with church...because of judgement and close-minded views. While I understand not performing in Studio 54...their reach was amazing.
Dorinda so gorgeous
Church People Are More Wordly Than The Wordly People. - Hornz.
This is STILL my song today....35-40 years later.

What about Vanessa Bell Armstrong, when she did "You Bring Out The Best In Me"? That song was controversial for some in the church.
The movie was really good🙏🏾🙌🏽💋❤️

She really is. I think Dorinda and Twinkie are the prettiest but all the sisters are lovely.
The church: "Sinners should not be listening to songs about Jesus."
Jesus: "It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
Church folks are the problem. They stand in the way of the relationship between God and the sinner. But, ahhhhhh, they will be held responsible for causing God's children to stumble and fall.
GOD IS WONDERFUL FOR THESE SISTERS LOVE THEM
I love this song!
When I 1st heard this track. I fell in 😍 love . It was playing on the secular stations. I never thought of the beat being wrong. It was and still is the gospel. Kirk Franklin got the smoke to. Church people are haters and religiously Judging all the time. They ministered to the lost in the night club and people was praising God dancing. That's what Jesus wanted when he sat with the sinners. Jesus Christ came to save the sinners not to condemn .
That is ridiculous! You can not control what people like. This is why I left the church and I worship everyday at home. The church should be happy that the sisters were reaching people outside of the church. That is why I love Kirk Franklin. His music gravitates towards the younger generation (mostly) with his upbeat/ hip hop style sound on some of his songs. When I’m sad, I listen to Kirk Franklin; it is almost like it is he made it cool to praise God lol
The movie was soooo great! 😭😭💗
The Clark Sisters show was fantastic, so much so, Imma watch the encore presentation, again at 12:01 tonight on Lifetime!!!
I remember we didn't realize that it was gospel music it was such a great song.
I love this song, didnt know it was theirs with stevie's beat.
I remember as a little girl, my friends and ppl in the neighborhood dancing to this song like it was secular music. . ."Gettn down on the funk". I was like, Hey y'all. This is a gospel song. God is being worshiped and uplifted in this song, is that booty shaking going with the theme/spirit of the song??
LaSundra Brown they did the same to Kirk Franklin
COGIC (like so many other dogmatic religious sects) is so oppressive and restrictive. Which is interesting given all the scandals and mess that has gone on in that sect. God loves the people dancing in the clubs as much as the ones dancing in church and there’s not much difference when you examine their lives.
Totally agree. I don't care what anyone says; no way (as a woman) that I'd want to be a member of a COGIC. And don't think it's changed from what it was years ago. Still the same misogynistic, homophobic, sleazy males in positions of authority.
