  • In this video I share my first impressions of the Jackson's Art Watercolor paints. Jackson's art recently started selling half pans of their paints for the first time. Thanks to your wonderful support of bookmarking and using my jackson's art referral link I was able to purchase this set of 24 half pans. There is a rumor that these paints are the same as the Sennelier professional watercolor paints. In this video I got through my first impressions of these paints as well as test out this rumor.

I was thinking about buying these colours for my database mainly because of the rumors of them being "made by Sennelier", so thank you for adressing it and comparing them. The color grid in Jackson's website sometimes doesn't list all the pigments a color uses, the best way to be sure is clicking the specific product link, for example, their Hooker's green uses PG36 and PY83, according to the specs page for its half pan version. In general it seems their paints are rather good, I got myself a tube of JAS french vermillion (PR242) and looks quite good compared to Schmincke's geranium red (also PR242).

    Private label paints don't have to be exactly the same to be made by the same company, especially when the private label paint is less expensive. There are enough similarities to hypothesize that Sennelier makes a modified or customized version for Jackson's, much like other companies make various retailers' paints. The clincher for me is that Sennelier has some unique color/pigments that match Jackson's. The price at Jackson's is really very affordable so very tempting to buy a few colors. On Jackson's website, Hooker's Green is listed as PY83 & PG36 (same pigments as Sennelier) probably a typo on the packaging as you mentioned.
    Thanks for comparing these paints!!

    • @ColoringKaria
      @ColoringKaria  Před 5 lety

      You are right of course. It’s just for the sake of fairness I can’t say with 100% that they are the same but only that there is clearly some sort of connection. Being sort of “a CZcams” I have to try to be more circumspect about what I say and how I say it. You are right though that there is enough here to say that Jackson’s is almost certainly made by sennelier. I did not know that about their brushes! Now I have to check them out.
      For me though the clincher is really that burnt sienna burnt umber. Sennelier’s are distinctive in how they are. Not only distinctive but radically so. It always stood out to be because it’s not an expensive pigment pbr7 so it’s a choice to make it more subbed than any other professional grade paint on that first pass. It also has this way of mixing where even though that first pass is subdued when it is mixed with other colors it sort of isn’t as much anymore. It’s not my style so I don’t usually use it. But I can see why it might be to for some.

    Quinacridone purple and helios purple are the same... PR122. i've read somewhere that a third party makes both brands paints for them under license that could explain the whole issue... sometimes its simply sennelier tubes with the jackson's label on it (see Teoh Parkablogs video)

    Excellent vid cuz, these look very nice and very much like the Sennelier paints I’ve tried as well; is there a big price difference? I love viridian it mixes very nicely with quin rose or any pinky red especially when it’s a nice granulating version of viridian to make a nice neutral or you can mix it with ultramarine blue (pb 29) and athroquinone red (pr 177) to create your own moonglow which is a beautiful shadow color, made even better if both your viridian and ultramarine are heavily granulating. Viridian like pthalo green is a mixing color and should never be used on its own. Give them a try in those combinations and you’ll find you’ll fall in love with viridian. I’m hoping your well and enjoying the new year!

      @@ColoringKaria Well, I've never come across paints that smell quite like Sennelier. And my theory was that the probability of Jackson coming up with the exact same mix of gums, sugars and dispersion agents should be small. Well, it was an idea.
      'Bout "too many blues", the way you use paints, coloring, and pans, you kinda can't have too many :). But if you paint, do paintings, then lot's of paints totally get in your way. About 8 - 12 is plenty.
      'Bout Viridian and "some place for it", watercolors are not like pens and pastels. You don't buy different hues. You buy different pigments, and their specific chemical and physical properties. The role of genuine Viridian is that it's absolutely permanent. Very, very few pigments are. Phthalo green is not.

I know some artist work with very limited palettes, but i have seen Daniel Smith share from artists who use what has to be at least 30+ in these tiny wells.

      @@ColoringKaria Lol, when I use pans, I'm an even greater sinner 😉. I have 48-sets.
      I forgot to say that Viridian isn't staining and lifts well. That's probably a more common reason to prefer it to Phthalo green in watercolors, because Phthalo is also very permanent and not really a concern unless you intend to bake it in desert sun. Genuine Viridian tends to be difficult to dissolve from pans and is maybe a bit weak in watercolors, but it's a lovely pigment in oil. But expensive.
