Hailing from Cambridge MA, the self proclaimed "low rock" group Morphine were a dynamic part of the 90's alt-rock movement. The trios' distinctive combination of saxophone, double bass and drums merged with the vocal stylings of lead singer Mark Sandman to create a truly original sound. Morphine's most popular releases include the albums "Cure for Pain", "Good", and "The Night" which was posthumously released by Sandman's bandmates after his passing.

My roommate in college used to play this song and I never knew any of the lyrics but the sax riff has been in my head for like... 25 years.
Bro this sax riff has been in my head since 1995, my highschool graphic arts teacher played all the Morphine albums almost none stop in the shop 1993-97. And today I went hunting for this wicked sax riff, I'm 44 now & it's still badass. My teachers name was William C Dick, (Mr. Dick) not a joke. He was the coolest teacher that ever lived, I learned a lot from him.
Still rocking this album these days. Nothing compares to that sax and bass. RIP Mark Sandman - he is still so missed.

@@Biscaine No mention was made of drug use at the time of his death. It was reportedly nearly 100 degrees, either on that day or at the venue. The inquest also attributed it to stress. His heart could have been easily damaged, especially if he was involved in heavy drug use.

Billy Conway (December 18, 1956 - December 19, 2021), aged 65

Such an absolutely legendary band. Being from MA, I was extremely fortunate to have seen Morphine at small clubs throughout the years and lived seeing them get the success they so rightfully deserved. R.I.P. Mark. You are so missed by so many, whether we personally knew you or not. Thank you for all the wonderful music. It still moves me so deeply and strikes a chord (pun slightly intended) where my eyes tear up and I lose my breath. There will never be another band like Morphine. Lightning in a bottle. 🔊💜🎶⚡️
Seeing them at the Middle East is one of my fave memories of them. Damn we had some good music come out of Mass.
@@themisfitmama4397 We sure did, and just going and seeing live music would lead you to following other bands. I’m not even gonna try to start listing any, because I’ll end up thinking about it all day and thinking, why didn’t I add so and so to that list. 😂
RIP Mark......I was lucky enough to see Morphine play live a handful of times. Being from Massachusetts and only a short drive to Boston, seeing them live in their home turf was awesome! I STILL listen to these albums all these decades later and they will stand the test of time because of how original they were

I discovered these guys in a long boarding video in the 90’s and they stuck in my head all the years since then. They had 3 songs in the video Longboard Magazines: Powerglide which was such a great video my non surfing friends had me dubbing tapes for them and the Morphine songs just made the video that much better. I ended up buying cd’s of Good and Cure for Pain as gifts for a few people. I still love to watch that video and hear You Speak My Language and Buena blasting while watching guys just kill it on 9’ logs. They were truly unique when so many others were cookie cutter versions of each other and Mark’s voice was truly his own and nobody else’s.
I had tickets to see them in Seattle about a week before he died. Amazing band that I never got to see live. RIP Mark, hope you are still making music wherever you went to next!
