State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)’s 4G subscribers base has reached the 8 lakh mark in the initial phase of launch across the north Indian regions, including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and western Uttar Pradesh, Business Standard reported citing a senior Department of Telecommunications (DoT) official. A Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)-led consortium comprising the Tata group firm Tejas Networks and Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) are deploying the indigenous 4G network for the telco. The abovementioned telecom department official told the publication that the network core is expected to be installed in the eastern, western, and southern regions by August, while the nationwide rollout is “scheduled to coincide with the festival season”. This will be followed by the introduction of 5G services within the next 12 months, the official said. BSNL has deployed over 3,500 4G towers, and aims for a full-scale commercial launch across the nation after hitting the 20,000 towers mark, according to the report. In May 2023, union telecom and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reportedly said that BSNL was aiming to corner 100 million 4G customers within 12 to 24 months, alongside its plans to erect 100,000 towers pan-India.
