Only thing worse that bare legs making fire is a full mountain man beard catching fire because the bird nest ignited on the raise motion! I saw this happen in the 80s.

I have found you can easily start fires without really trying by leaving your smoldering patch wad to burn in the dry tender where it falls when shooting. I figured many woods were set ablaze during wars and rendezvous or just shooting in the yard. I have started warning people of this fact and someone told me a story of a fire started at a Scottish
gathering when wadding was shot without the ball to be safe around lots of people. None of the old timers ever told me of this obvious hazard. They just shot and went about their way.

I soaked some char cloth in a saturated water/potassium nitrate solution and dried it. Works well too. Long, thick pieces (seams f.e.)can be used as a primitive fuse.

I wonder how many bags of rags a mountain man would have to carry, along with all his other provisions, to last a winter. Sure, a fire can and would be started from last evenings coals. But considerable travel from place to place would draw upon a fragile tote. Perhaps a study of the fire starters nature provides would be source of reliable, inexhaustible “char cloth.” For example, I have found popple punk wood, that soft as a sponge, will char nicely, and though perhaps not as readily to catch a spark, burns slower and steadier.
I’ve tried punk char. Works for sure, certainly not as good as cloth but it does the job

Horizontal shots are the toughest for me.
I definitely hold low as the majority of the time I shoot over it.
