Why Bonsai Are So Expensive | So Expensive

  • Bonsai is an artform that requires years of training, and centuries of dedication. At the 2012 International bonsai Convention a tree was on sale for one hundred million yen, just under a million dollars. And many more of these trees are considered completely priceless. So what is it that makes these trees so expensive?

I just got into bonsai a while ago and it's really helped me appreciate plants and especially patience a lot more than I did before! Just knowing that you're helping to grow and nurture something that might far, far outlive you is incredible and exciting. I love this hobby and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone! It's cheap too, you don't need all the fancy tools and pots at the beginning- just go out and look for tree seeds, plop 'em into the ground and water them. You can turn pretty much any tree into a bonsai if you want to and it's so much fun to go out into the woods looking for seeds or tiny seedlings to take home!

Or the ones with really thick nebari-style root. It's done by grafting. So technically not a real bonsai.

This female bonsai master is also something of a "rebel" because Japanese traditional beliefs are very gender rigid. My wife attended an international bonsai conference in Japan, and the Japanese male presenters literally told the audience "you cannot be a Bonsai master if you are a woman" and "I am the last of my family to do bonsai, I only have daughters and no sons so my knowledge will die with me."
So for this lady to quietly go about being awesome in the face of huge discrimination makes her even more of a legend (in a quietly humble Japanese way of course).

Succulents are extremely easy to keep alive. Remember, they love sunlight. You can't keep them in the middle of a room. If you live in a cold weather state (like I do, I'm in Ohio), keep them outside for as much as the year as much as possible, as long as temperatures are above 32 F. Take them inside and keep them on a sunny windowsill during the winter. If you live in a state that doesn't experience freezing temperatures, you can leave them outside year-round. When we get a string of days here in the winter when it's above 32 F, I take mine outside. Even a cloudy day outside is brighter than a sunny day inside. Most succulents tolerate cold temperatures quite well, as long as it's above freezing.

I’ve always liked the way the trees looked but me and my cousin saw the price and was like “never mind, ain’t paying that much for a silly, but neat looking tree.” I wish I had know the amount of time and care it took to grow and produce one. @@jossi9828 No, like no I won't. But what if I did, right? Like i went to seek the help of a professional on the whim of an internet comment. I google some psychologists nearby, call them up and make sure they take my insurance, set up an appointment and show up. I show them this video and tell them I found the first few seconds really funny and that this is the sole reason for my visit. That is a waste of their time as a professional, my time and money. Just like I have wasted moments writing this reply. You have wasted opportunities finding humor and laughing at things in your everyday life. Laughter feels good, try it sometime - it is fulfilling.

@@Kanghoryang No, it means I was having an argument with someone who deleted all of their comments so now what I have said looks really out of context. But yeah, a bonsai tree takes many years of precision and discipline which I don't have. Anyone watching the video knows that I agree with you there.

I always thought Bonsai trees were neat, but I never really knew anything about them, this gives me an incredible respect for the people who work on them, I had no concept of an art form that took so long.

I had the privilege of visiting the National Arboretum in Washington DC this past summer and there is a Bonsai garden of trees that are on average 200-300 years old, including one that survived the Atomic Explosion near Nagasaki that is 600 years old and was then offered as a peace offering from Japan following the war. That day gave me a whole new appreciation for Bonsai as it is way more than just an art form, it teaches many things

The reason it is so expensive is the crazy amount of effort it take to make one a crazy amount. Japan has a lot of expensive things because in Japan almost everyone takes there job seriously and puts a lot of effort in to it. So the expensive version of something in Japan is very expensive because in Japan they do not half fast something it is 100% or 0%.
