    I am very sorry to have to write this comment. It is not to show disrespect, not to show lack of appreciation, nor is it to disparage. -- My honest motivation is to enhance the enjoyment and increase the number of subscribers to this channel.
    Now, I was very happy with Felix, especially before the time his family moved to the US. Even after that, I was very happy with his narrative. But then one day someone else had to do the narration because Felix was unavailable right then. -- To my astonishment, I found that particular episode more engaging, easier to follow, and less intense, less gripping, less enthralling. Up until that I always found myself out of breath after Felix' flamboyant, haranguing, sensationalist and escalating narration.
    Make no mistake, I absolutely admire Felix' adherence to fact, to respected sources, and absolutely to a relentless pursuit of excellence!!! That is the True Value of this channel compared to the nearest competitors! At least IMHO.
    -----
    Combining today's narrator's grounded and relatable reading with Felix' ambitious and effusive transcript actually reaps the best fruit of both worlds.
    So, I hope, in the future, Felix advances to the Main Producer and assigns this guy to the default Narrator.

      The only thing I would change is to consider viewers who watch all Felix’s videos. There is a lot of time dedicated to introducing each advance in general terms (calling each advance as historic game changing rapid progress in technology/capability which is good context) … except when you’ve already heard it 5 times in previous videos. I would cut it in half and get to the specifics quicker.

    I certainly don't mind alternate hosts of this programme. You all know what you're talking about. However, following the same narrative format and identical script language, including catch phrases that are supposed to convey the sincere thoughts of a individual, actually degrade the message by making them pro forma, rather than sincere. So, find something different to say than 'You rock', or 'Let's dive right in'. Cronkite had 'that's the way it is', and NOBODY tried to adopt it other than Cronkite. Same with Rather's 'Courage!' but for different reasons. Informative vid. Thanks very much!

    My thought is that the Starship should just practice, with attached legs, landing multiple times with "test" chopsticks to see if the ship can be controlled enough to maneuver for the chopsticks. Then after the Starship proves it can work with the test chopsticks, practice on the booster. You have to build a dedicated test chopstick structure and landing platform for this. But you can improve the accuracy and reliability of the landings now without having to attach the ships. And you can improve the chopsticks quicker too. In the near future this dedicated test area can be used for other updated capabilities, new prototypes, etc. In the meantime the launching tower(s) can be send up the ships that have been tested.

  • @benjaminshropshire2900
    @benjaminshropshire2900 Před 2 měsíci +4

    Re the test stand; My guess is that that heavy footer work behind the flame diverter is going to be one side of a railway of some sort to slide the stand back and forth. Combine that with a permanent/fixed gantry crane over it and the setup becomes simple: bring in the test article on SPMTs, pick it up with the gantry, remove the SPMTs, slide the stand under it to set it down, etc.

    The launches are exciting and the way the testing gets faster and faster but the changes in the build site are pretty amazing too. Star Factory is going to be huge - what a change from the three tents that they ran with for quite a while - and looking at that helicopter shot I also remember how I watched in awe as High Bay was built and dwarfed Midbay. Now I look at those aerial shots and think how small Highbay looks compared to the two Megabays.
    I do wonder if, once the new huge office building is finished or even partially finished, SpaceX might demolish Stargate (I think they’d need to buy it first since they don’t actually own it?) and Highbay to make space to build another Megabay which, knowing SpaceX, might even be more “mega” than the existing Megabays.

      Ok. The question is if Boeing, NASA or Blue origin had these same events would you also say that? Hmmm. You might but we all know a lot of Space X 'fans' would not. In this day and age a test program need not feature the catastrophic destruction that this one often does. Space X is frankly re-learning lessons that were learned by Sergi Korolev and Werner Von Braun NASA and Roscosmos in the 1930's to 1980's.

      @HontasFarmer80 It's their rocket, they can test it however they feel best. Obviously it's working since every launch it's getting further and launch wait times are getting shorter. Unlike Nasa or any other space agency who has literally 1 chance so it has to be perfect. Because of that It takes years of design, building, and perfecting the final build. I don't believe landing the largest rocket ever made back at the launch pad with "chopsticks" was something Von Braun, Roscosmos, and Nasa had done from 1930s to 1980s. Lastly, who says they aren't using knowledge from back then? They aren't reinventing anything, they are improving upon it in a that makes sense. Before you say cost isnt worth the investment, Elon is literally one of the richest men in the world, he could launch a starship out of his pocket without making a dent in his wallet. Sorry if this sounds like I'm arguing, I just see the positives in cool things like this and I wish other people did too. Have a good day:)

    As a long time Texas resident, I am curious about weather mitigations. I am sure they have to do this at the Cape in Florida. Is all of this infrastructure protected from a tidal surge of 10 to 15 feet, and 200 mph winds if a hurricane comes in. My first hurricane experience was Carla, back in 1961, where she just about covered the entire Gulf of Mexico in clouds. She came in at Port Lavaca. In the process, she sucked all of the water out of Corpus Christi Bay. All of the boats at the Marina were on the sandy bottom. The water came back, hitting Galveston. The devastation was incredible, looking like a bomb went off. Lots of tornado damage, and the tidal surge went over the top of the seawall. Houses within a mile of the beach were obliterated. I am all for SpaceX, so I do get concerned about a Starship factory and launch towers, and tank farms disappearing. I always look to the future, expecting the best, but preparing for the worst.

      I do love SpaceX and will always take up their cause, but they can be a bit shortsighted. I was complaining for a year prior to the first launch that the lack of a water suppression system would doom the rocket. It did. Looking at the tank farm dented to shit as well. But their hardware-based approach works, for the same reason it worked for the Russians in the 50's and 60's.

    SpaceX seems finnaly adopting a flame deflector, at least for testing . They also took a long time before using water deluge. It is a mystery to me why they have not done for Starship what almost everybody have been using for decades: flame deflector and water deluge at liftoff.

    • @Whataboutit
      @Whataboutit  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Same but also not. The reason behind this strange behaviour is simple. They want to question every detail. Is this needed? And if, can it be done more efficiently? They go at it very open minded.

    • @jujenho
      @jujenho Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, but they paid a heavy price for that. Another thing is the absurd closeness of tanks to the launching pad. A lot of damage was caused on them by liftoff debris. Just common sense would have avoided that.

    After flights 1 to 3 with the beating the quick release system, I think, they should get the quick disconnect to swing away horizontally, as they have to do with the crew walkways, so they have as minimal heat distortion or broken flexible pipework like in flight 3. Maybe using some of the chopsticks cables and guide gear?
    It's obvious that the qd hood can't totally cope with the heat, vibration and raw violence of the worlds biggest booster ignition. Swinging it away horizontally allows a greater distance from the booster lift-off flames and turbulence, minimises potential repeat rebuilds of the hood and frame every flight. That would simplify post launch repair and allow faster stack and launch cadence.
    And it's going to need something radical like this for when spacex innovate even more powerful rockets, and larger booster/starship versions coming on stream.

      I will say that one of those ideas, or maybe something else entirely is or will be in the work. Probably current repairs are just for next launch, or modification will be that substantial that it is waiting for launch pad 2 ready to overhaul pad 1

      Guys, does it make sense to expect that the Starship has a camera under both upper wings? Since the available clips showed only the side shielded from the plasma (the left one), I think it would be fantastic to get a glimpse also from that side which went down first, right? As we didn't see it, I think the SpaceX team has it however and can see what this plasma cloud did with the heat tiles.

    Obsolescence is not just cover for lack of political will or commitment. Parts like chips get discontinued and sometimes replacement, board re-design and re-qualification is prohibitively expensive. When left with the choice to pay the bill sometimes the customer looks to something new. Love the show and space coverage. Take care!

    The new footing extending out from the flame trench could be for a test stand slide system. If the new test fire stand was dropped on slides and slid over the flame trench it would eliminate the need for a crane.

    What about putting a clear coat around the heat tiles to try and stop them from breaking up. Kind of like ceramic bathroom tiles that some require a clear coat to seal the grout? Just throwing it out there. Also, great job on the re-light footage... But will it work in its purposed fashion? I guess we will al have to see.

    Thanks for sharing your videos. Good job with the presentation. With so many companies looking to build a second stage I’m surprised that Elon doesn’t see falcon 9 boosters as a turnkey product. You come up with the launch and recovery facilities SpaceX supplies the training and first stage. Your on your own for the second stage. Seems like it would generate extra revenue for SpaceX since they aren’t exactly building new boosters every day since they really don’t need them. They are already launching at a good pace expanding as they are able. As long as they price them high enough to not be undercut. I would think the more they make the better for economies of scale

    im worried about the longevity and safety of the tower chopstick cable, it was glowing and sparks shooting off it in flight 3, and with no backup cable, and it hasnt been replaced or inspected as far as i know it would be a good idea to have some sort of redundancey or some kinda brakes or way to lock it down instead of relying on the drawworks to hold it the pads it sits on at the bottom
