  • The Berlin wall would become a symbol of ideological division and suppression of human rights during the Cold War.
    In August 1961, the Communist government of the German Democratic Republic of East Germany began construction of the wall and placement of barbed wire between west Berlin and the East.

    When the wall first went up, a Russiam soldier managed to get through it by ramming an armoured car into it. After he crashed through the wall, West Berliners dragged his unconscious body out of the vehicle, and hid him in a local bar to prevent his capture by East Berlin authorities.

    My former German teacher was from East Berlin, he was a border guard directly at the Berlin wall during the early 80s when he did his conscription service. He told us in class how he escaped: He jumped down the wall when there was no other serviceman around, ran across the minefields and crossed the spring-guns to reach West Berlin, where they allowed him to leave to West Germany where he became a German teacher in a small Westphalian town until today.
    It's almost miraculous that he survived the incredibly dangerous death zone.

      This is one of the funniest I've heard from translation

    • @TruthNerds
      @TruthNerds Před 4 lety +34

      "Berliner" is ambiguous, it *can* mean a type of jelly doughnut (which, unlike the American variety, has no hole in the middle), but in context it's clear that it means "person/man from Berlin". You can also make the same joke with many toponyms (names derived from places), e.g. "Ich bin ein Neapolitaner." could be interpreted as "I am a person/man from Naples, Italy." or "I am a layered waffle with hazelnut filling.", and "Ich bin ein Hamburger." explains itself.
      Sometimes it is claimed that the correct way to say "I am a person/man from Berlin." was "Ich bin Berliner." (without the article). While it *would* be more *common* to say "Ich bin Berliner." in conversation, the use of the article does *not* automatically change the meaning, and is in fact entirely reasonable for emphasis. I.e. if you don't want to just convey the information but drive home a point.

    I once had a discussion with an elderly German lady about the fall of the wall. She said it wasn't all jubilation afterwards. West Germans taxes went up in order to pay for the upgrading of East Germanys infrastructure, also many East Germans were so used to the gov't providing housing and employment that a lot of them began to complain. I suppose however, that it was simply growing pains.

    I'm not for sure if the first video on this topic mentioned it, but an interesting fact was that East German troops were never paired up with someone they knew. The East German military always feared they might let ordinary East Germans escape or the soldiers themselves might defect. We have seen this lately with North Korean troops escaping into South Korea.

      @@arawn1061 Nice try but no. Conservatives and constitutionalists have historically been some of the biggest pushers of social justice. It's the social justice that devolves into tribal identity politics and censorship that conservatives tend to associate with radical. Socialized medicine IS essentially communist. So half of your statement is untrue and the other half is justified. There would have been no reason however to associate the west with fascism at the time the Berlin wall was built. Actually fascism was a lot closer ideologically to the Soviet Union than it was to the capitalist west. The wall was built to shield East Berliners from the prosperity of the West, it had nothing to do with fascism or keeping people out in general.

      Leaving east Berlin to east germany was possible. But leaving eastern germany was extremely difficult. the border was almost the same as the berlin wall (armed guards, dogs, land mines, etc...). Although, some people made it.

    • @antontrees2455
      @antontrees2455 Před 6 lety +5

      Getting from East Germany to West Germany or even from eastern Europe to western Europe was pretty difficult, because the iron curtain was basically one fortified border from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea. While the fortifications mostly weren't as strong as in Berlin they still were there so you couldn't simply cross the border. Most East Germans that wanted to defect to West Germany did this via detour to Hungary or Czechoslovakia.

    • @aoli8142
      @aoli8142 Před 6 lety +2

      Plus, its easier to cross from building to building, which was essentially what the Berlin wall was; a wall between neighbourhoods.

    The Ubahn, underground trains ran full circle between East and west Berlin and many East Germans attempted to escape to the west via the underground trains. I lived in West Germany in 1981 and was allowed a 1day pass to travel to the DDR via the underground train system, as a foreigner. I remember feeling very nervous when returning to West Berlin because I was asked by border guards to stand in front of one of them whereby I had to endure being stared at for nearly 5 minutes without moving my head ? Very unerving, the idea was to rattle me and get me to crack in case I was an East German pretending to be a foreigner in order to escape to the west.And yes, I did crack in front of a guard but it was in a fit of laughter and he looked throughly disgusted because he knew no East German would have the nerve to act like that. I got back ok to West Berlin. I don't know how many East Berliners got caught trying to escape via the underground train system ? I was told some did .
