The birth of the what became the #Saab 9-5 started in February 1993 when seven designers were individually tasked with creating an all new mid-sized car that reflected Saab's #history and values. Tony #Catignani's design was chosen since it was the "wildest idea" that pushed the envelope for a mainstream family sedan. For a #design that is now celebrating it's 25th anniversary in 2018, it has aged remarkably well and still competes favourably with what has recently come out of Detroit, Bavaria, Japan and Korea. It was widely applauded during internal reviews but their were some practical implications that we appreciate like the lack of rearward visibility due to the height of the huge trunk and shape of the rear window. His original design saw a sedan equipped with Viking style rims so don't think a nicely refinished set of Vikings rims can't work with your winter typres. As the exterior was so dramatic for its time, the goal was to make the interior calmer so that driver and passengers would have a harmonious and balanced ecosystem to provide a place for the necessary focus and attention on longer drives.

I actually like the '98-'01 9-5 a bit more than the '06-'10, but my fave is the '02-'05. Overall, IMO, the OG 9-5 was Saab's latest interpretation of the original 900, which is quite apparent in the design mock-ups during early development stages. In many ways, the 9-5 was more like the original 900 than the NG 900/93, one perfect example being the obligatory "clamshell" hood.

I saw a very nice video in Swedish ( english subtitles) about the development process of the 9-5. Also a documentary about the end of Saab and the struggle during Spiker era. Let me see if I can find them.

I’m the only one that likes the ugly 2006 through 2009 ones. It took me six months to find a wagon that I liked from those years. And I’ve dumped 10 grand into it but I do love it

At the time, Saab was too competitive with Western brands so they finished him off. I don't want to make conspiracy theories but I think the Swedes have sold themselves.
