The period in World War II immediately after the Fall of France has always fascinated me, because it was probably one of the only points in the war where Germany could realistically have won. It was a period when the British had legitimate reason to question if the war could still be won, and if terms had been sought with Germany, the whole course of history might have changed considerably for the worse.

It could be argued that Churchill not only saved England but all of Europe almost singlehandedly. One of the greatest leaders the world has ever known. And he was the one lone individual world leader that Hitler feared.

Probably could be argued that his actions saved the world from these fascists. If the UK had made peace with Germany, who knows just what could've happened. In fact, if Nazi's had managed to invade and control the UK and perhaps even the British Empire, then the history of the whole world would be very different and very much darker than it actually was.

An Irish work colleague of mine went to see this film at the cinema. The next day she came in and I asked her how she liked it. She replied "It was a great film. Halifax was a (insert expletive here)!" Poor Lord Halifax got a bum wrap in this film. As Foreign Secretary he was the one who pushed for the UK going to war with Germany if Hitler invaded Poland. He didn't want war, but after the defeat of France he truly believed that making peace with Hitler would save Britain. We know with hindsight that it would not have, but no one could predict the future and he was trying to save British lives.
I remember seeing an interview with Churchill's Private Secretary. He said the crises moment about who would run the country came at a meeting between Chamberlain, Churchill and Halifax. Chamberlain turned to Churchill and asked him if a Lord could also be Prime Minister in this modern age. This left Churchill in a quandary, because if he said yes, then Chamberlain would've immediately offered the job to Halifax, but if he said no then he was giving Chamberlain no choice but himself which seemed a selfish thing to do. So Churchill did the only decent thing he could think of, he turned away and didn't answer the question. The final choice was actually made by Halifax himself. He began getting terrible abdominal pains, so he pulled himself out of the running. The abdominal pains then resolved themselves. It was, I think, at this point that he realised the enormous stresses that the job of Prime Minister during wartime would put upon him and didn't even try to re-enter the race. Once Churchill was in power he kept Halifax on as Foreign Secretary, and then in 1941 sent him to Washington DC as British Ambassador, a vital and important appointment as the USA was drawn into the war in Dec that year. Halifax was not a coward, or an appeaser, and he worked tirelessly to ensure full cooperation between the UK and USA. But in the film he's cast as the antagonist, as it would've been less exciting if everyone had just sat around and agreed fully with Churchill.

Amazing movie but not many reaction channels to this because there aren't any yank heroes winning the war when they didn't even join in for several years lol

Then you have films like u-571 where the Americans who weren’t even there replaced the British as the heroes of the story

Apart from Winston? The reason they love him is because he was half American through his mother!

Mans got a petty fued with america for no reason. I can understand americans being portrayed as heroes in movies but you must have forgotton most movies are made in america. You also mustve forgotton all the american supply ships that got sunk by uboats trying to get supplies to YOUR country. Shit youre lucky you got that. Most americans didnt want to fight another war in europe but teddy still helped how he can. You also mustve forgotton that a massive chunk of the american navys fleet was destroyed at pearl harbour months later. Did you forget about the american fighter pilots that volunteered in the battle of britain too? Or are you just mad disrespectful for fun
