The Ripley is also my best bike ever, I completely agree. I bought a few others and I always come back to the Ripley, because it rides so much better
You can install shock the other way so the controls point up and do not interfere with the water bottle (that way have it also Ibis on their web btw). Thanks for the video, was checking for it every day for many days :D

Great job with this video. I like that it was long and that gave you a better opportunity to articulate things a little more. I also liked Tyler chiming in with some of his observations. Looks like an awesome place to ride. And again, the fact that you rode the Exie in the True Grit race is supper impressive. I am not sure people understand how good of a rider you are.

@@ErichVonCartmann ,....Yep, I agree. We that love bikes love to hear someone go into detail about a bike and how it compares to other similar bikes. For someone like me, not only do I not get to ride any bikes that I don't own, I don't ever get a chance to even see them in person. I think many of us buy bikes pretty much blind with the only insight we have before we spend 5-7 thousand dollars comes from guys like mtbyumyum. The more he speaks the more I can glean from those words. So the more words the better.

Great comparison! I am glad companies are making bikes like the Exie with most bikes getting heavier and more enduro. For me my 120mm bike really is the best fit for how I like to ride. With some good tires I can do any trail at the speeds I’m willing to ride.
Totally agree. It's nice to ride the exie and not feel so far forward on the bike too. Modern geo is good for steep climbs and descents but for more even terrain and low grade climbs the geo on the exie is very welcome. Switching between the element and the exie has been very eye opening on my local trails. I'm surprised by how often I grab the exie and leave the element at home.

If you want the Exie to feel a little bit plusher, take out the token in the rear and add a few psi. For technical trails I had a hard time using all the travel, and that solved it. At the moment I am running the Cane Creek Inline DBAir (with three bands) and that opens the rear end to new levels. High volume, linear travel and good ramp up with the rubber bands installed.
I would also highly recommend trying 2.6 Kenda Booster Pro TR tires on the exie. They should be about 2.45" on the rims... super fast rolling, great traction and lightweight 660-680 grams... a true Goldilocks tire. The higher volume will make it feel plusher. They fall somewhere between a rekon race and rekon... just lighter weight and faster rolling

Great comparison, got my eyes on a Ripley, Fezzari Signal Peak, or Trek Top Fuel. Curious if you'll be looking at some more short travel bikes like the Signal Peak and Top Fuel. The Fuel Ex is an old design so curious to see how the Top Fuel does now, or if that rear end still feels loose.
I can’t recommend the Ripley enough to people… hands down best bike in the short travel category for 90% of the people out there on 90% of the terrain I ride. Can’t do any better than that!!
Love your channel. Question: I’m in Phoenix area - ride Hawes mostly (if you haven’t ridden it - mostly chunky rocky loose over hard - pedal to the top. I currently ride a 2018 SC Hightower. I like it but always wonder if I’d like something else better. If you had only 1 bike for this ? Switchblade, Trail 429, Ripley or RM Element? Would an average guy like me notice a meaningful difference from the Hightower?
I live in AZ too and looked at the Ripley, Trail 429, and ended up with the Stumpjumper. The value you get is worth it over boutique brands. I understand the Element gives up some climbing ability (compared to the Ripley) to be better at descending, which doesn’t line up with our trail systems and style of riding.
Since Fezzari is local to you, have you considered hitting them up for a test ride on the new Signal Peak? It is on my short list in addition to the Ripley.

Look at the geometry on the V3 ripley vs the exie. The sizing is more modern on the exie but the geo is almost identical.

another GREAT VIDEO! then again, all your videos are great. It is nice having a rocket ship! My 2015 China Bike (carbon fiber and full-suspension) is 22.8 lbs, and I paid much much less than a true FS XC bikes like the scott spark rc and the ibis ixie. the build kit I have on my China Bike is basically a $10k build! and I paid only $600 for the frame (with no shock). HAHAHAHAH

@@mtbyumyum , this China Build I have basically has $8k parts kit on it now (retail price)! The frame was only $600 painted from Velobuild (painted white), and it came without a shock, shock mounting hardware, and did not even come with a rear axle, basically it came to me bare. I have slowly upgraded her since 2016 to make her the build she is today. I really have no choice but to keep this bike now as no way I will be able to sell it as is for even a 3rd of what she is worth. If I do sell it I would have to part it out. I would be lucky to get $500 for the frame and shock on the used market. That is OK though, because I like the bike enough to keep it "forever" or until it breaks.
Hi, I just picked up a V4 Ripley pretty much based on your glowing reviews of it. I live in Los Angeles and the trails I ride are mostly hard pack with loose stuff. My bike weighs 30.8 lbs. it cam with a Minion DHF 2.5 in front and an Aggressor 2.5 rear. Wheels are Ibis S35. I think I can shave off 1.5 lbs if I go with you suggestion of tire Rekon 2.4 and Ardent Race 2.35. I’m not racing but I do appreciate a lighter ride. Anyway thanks for sharing your valuable insight!
A set of custom built carbon wheels are what will get you going faster. Make sure your brakes are ready though because it’s a lot scarier😂

What's your current bike garage? I have a V1 ripley and battling the impulse to swap it for an exie (fortunately I don't have anywhere to buy one so that keep the wallet happy). I do also have an HD3 in the garage, do you think swapping the ripley for an exie is a noticeable difference from an XC race perspective, or is a weight weenie build ripley still a decent option?
Edit: maybe a better question is: if you had all the same components besides the frame and shocks, do you think there's still a resonable difference between the ripley and exie (running the ripley with a 120 fork)?
My Exie is built with an identical spec as my previous Ripley with the exception of tires. The ripley set up light weight is awesome but it's still not on par with the Exie. Much of it is frame design/geo

Completely agree. Probably my favorite bike I've ever ridden in CC. Every time I go out to ride I've got my Rocky Mountain Element sitting there and basically never grab it. The Exie is just so much fun!

Hi Jason, Have you ever felt your Ripley or the Exie getting hang up on highspeed chattery stuff whether before or after you tuned your rear shock? Just like what you mentioned with your Rocky Mountain before using air token.
No. I've not had that problem on the Ripley or Exie. If you're running into that problem, you might try less sag on your shock and see if that helps.
@@mtbyumyum, I don't own an Ibis yet but I'm looking at one now. I know on my 2019 Stumpjumper LT, the rear end will get hang up on fast chattery stuff doesn't matter what shock I use (DPS, DPX2, DHX or RS Deluxe). I don't feel that on my new Santa Cruz and was wondering if the Ibis has that too. Anyway, good to know. Thanks!
Jason. I live in Michigan. Home trails are DTE energy and Potwatami. Mostly flow. Looking at the ripley AF or the Exie. They are currently the same price $3500. Which one would you buy? Like the ripley but the carbon exie is pulling me that way.
Fun! Flow trails are the best! As Im sure you know, the Ripley will be more versatile but that Exie was made for flow!! Exie shock interference with the water bottle: is the issue solved by mounting the shock so that the lockout switch is facing up towards the frame?

Dude….I thought you sold you Ripley? I sold mine. I bought the Switchblade. I am forced into a one bike situation. I have two daughters that will both need cars in the next 2 years so I am having to scale back. I loved my Ripley. I probably should have kept it. The novelty of the new stumpy wore off pretty quick. I hope the switchblade keeps me happy for a while.
Yeah, I sold the Ripley and picked up the Exie. So far I'm loving it on these trails!
I did the same but went T429. I liked the Ripley but the T429 climbs just as well, maybe better in really technical stuff, and descends much better. Could be the Pivot just fits my 6'1 frame better.
I'm sure the Pivot will do that for you. Bikes are getting so expensive right?

I had a 2021 Epic Evo right after my RipleyAF. I thought the Epic Evo felt nearly if not as good going downhill.. although I didn't feel the bike was as nimble when trying to change lines or cornering.. it felt a bit longer and sluggish in that respect. Maybe because if longer stays and a generally more flexible rear triangle.
The pedaling efficiency was completely different. The EE felt like a slug compared to my RipleyAF... and to think the EE was a few pounds lighter. Also the EE's rear end felt like it was getting hung up when climbing going over obstacles or even mild uneven or bumpy terrain. Maybe it's the nature of the single pivot, but it felt as if it would hang up and then leverage (pull) against the front triangle and gave me the sensation the ST angle was slackening in those moments ( I've felt similar sensations on other single pivot flex stay bikes such as the new Blur TR). Sort of felt blah.. so to counter that I moved the seat forward a chunk and used more body English to preemptively counter that vibe. Meanwhile the RipleyAF I would just sit and pedal, it would (of course) haul ass but also provides great tracking and traction.
Don't know why I sold the RipleyAF. The Epic Evo lasted a couple of months and went to a new home. So here I am now watching these (fantastic by the way) videos because I'm on the fence between these two bikes. Lol

Forgive me because I'm sure this has been asked and answered, but what are the specs of your custom Salt Cycles wheels set? And what's the price for Yumyum subscribers?
I have the Berd spokes laced to dtswiss 180 hubs and 28mm id carbon hoops. I've also had regular spokes, I9 Hydra hubs and 30mm carbon hoops. They excellent wheels. I believe with I9's and regular spokes they retail for $1,650 and yumyum subscribles get them for 15-20% off if I remember correctly.... so like $1,350 or around there... it depends a little bit on the hubs and spokes. Berd spoke wheels are -quite a bit more money as they're highly labor intensive. Call Chris at 801-943-8502 and let them know you subscribe to the channel. Good luck!!

Great bike! Mine was right at 22 lbs... depending on what tires I had on it.... I've since sold it and moved onto the Pivot Mach 4 sl.... there are still things I really love about the Exie... both are excellent bike! Congrats!
Got my ripley v4 a couple months ago after watching these videos, fantastic bike! I am a heavier rider (225lbs geared) and am finding a lack of midstroke support on the shock. I’ve read the McLeod does well, do you have any experience with the shock?
I weigh 220 and I’m running a DVO Topaz T-3 on my Ripley V4. It’s set up with 190 in the bladder, 230 in the shock, with 2 positive and 1 negative spacers, as DVO technical support suggested. Completely changed the ride. LOVE it now.
how would you compare the Exie to the Pivot 4SL?
Exie is far more easy going than the Mach 4sl. Not has harsh or stiff for my lighter weight. Easier to ride and just more fun in my experience for a riding my size and weight.

Oh wow, so you're taking the Rocky Mountain over the Ripley - OK, _but what about the Trail 429?_
Yeah, I sold the Ripley. I've been looking for a replacement for some time for that bike. I love the T429 and thought it was the right replacement but then decided to go with the Exie for short travel rides and some racing.... once I landed on the Exie I figured I get something a little slacker than the T429. That's where the Element comes into play. There is enough of a difference between the Exie and Element to justify owning both bikes.

Sadly yes. Love the bike but with the exie in place I wanted something a bit more slack... went for the Rocky Mountain Element.

@@cliffsangelsphotography I agree with you totally. However, I'm enjoying this new DVO topaz rear air shock, so easy to set up and its been impressive. Also trying WTB tires again, VIgilante 2.5f and Trail boss 2.4 rear, I'm impressed with them on the Ripmo.
Although Rocky Mountain customer service is less than satisfactory, I'll stick with RM Altitude....

The Exie with the Ripley v4 geometry would be interesting and probably closer to where XC bikes are going. The Ripley was a trend setter... next Ripley I bet ranges from 65.5-66.5 HTA depending on fork travel.
I sort of hope they don't change the next Ripley too much.

The geo of the Exie just isn't progressive enough for me. I keep hoping some bike manufacturer will take a leap and make an XC bike with truly progressive geo. Build an XC bike with a 76* STA and 65* HTA and I would rush out to buy it. Even the carbon Ripley could be more progressive and I'm hoping a new more progressive version comes out soon with a 77* STA and a 64* HTA.
Scott Spark is pretty close to what you’re describing. I have a 2021 model and it’s great but they made all the changes I was looking for in the 2022 model lol. 65 hta, wider rims, etc. Feel like I bought mine a year too early haha. Love that bike still though
@@mtbjoser I've actually taken a test ride on this bike but I'm not a fan of of the Twin-Lock system or the hidden shock nor the way all those cables are managed in the headset. It's just too much proprietary tech that's expensive and difficult to maintain. The Spark is just too techie for me. My local bike shop is having trouble selling these bikes. I guess other riders aren't liking all this tech either. While Top Fuel's, Epic Evo's, and Spur's are flying off the shelf.

@@marksandoval5361 I just got the new Spark for the geo and I got along with the twin loc very fast and feels just as natural as dropper at this point but you could take the twinloc off if you wanted to... Its just a fox 34 and the rear shock can be ran without twin loc also. The cables in the headset you couldn't change but I mean how often do you take your headset apart now..
@@marksandoval5361 Right on, personally I love the Twin Loc, as the other comment said it quickly becomes as natural as working a dropper post. It almost becomes like an alternate gear or something. I can see your points though, it’s different for sure from a service standpoint. Happy riding to you!

Omg why people compare two way different bikes! Exie is a XC race bike. People should compare this to trek supercaliver. Exie is a formula one race bike for people like me 139lbs who actually race! Funny to watch videos. I wonder why not allow pro players to actually review these XC race bikes!
