This is not just a problem of mountain towns, this is a problem all over the world in any town that is popular with tourists in particular. I didn't really get the emphasis on people moving from cities during the pandemic (due to remote working) being the biggest problem but then almost glossing over the AirBnB/VRBO component. On top of this you didn't mention companies like Blackstone buying up housing and housing developments all over urban and suburban areas pricing people out to rural areas and other low population towns. Companies like that would rather let their development sit empty than lower lease or buying prices. Housing isn't an investment scheme, housing is essential to living. If you were going to take on this issue Outside, I would've expected it to be done a little better than just blaming "city folk" that want to move out to mountain towns. That is so very "Oh no the Californians are ruining my city" when they problem is actually much more complex.

Lived in Breck in 08 before the bubble burst,my 4room mates and I were paying 4k a month, couldn't find anything else. Summit Cove had the only "affordable" housing around and solid booked,no availability. Definitely a problem,I can only imagine how pricey it is now.

When Vail buys another mountain they should probably be building a new dorm to house 25 more employees instead.... crazy idea
