    • @FujishimaAkiko
      @FujishimaAkiko Před 4 lety +8

      It's not Wal-Mart, it's the laws. The same thing goes in food service as well. I used to work for an Italian fast food place, and any pizza that was in the hot box for longer than 20 minutes had to be tossed. Perfectly good pizzas. Sometimes they'd let employees take them home, but that would only be if the franchise owners were not there. The managers would sometimes skirt the rules, but it was only employees. When I asked why we don't just donate all these wasted pizzas to local shelters it was explained that it can't be done due to food safety regulations. Even if the food is fine, there are guidelines that have to be followed when it comes to food and how long it can be on a shelf and sold or even given away. So, it's a good thing there are Freegans out there. They're a big solution to an even bigger problem. Of course they can't be expected to take all of it, but they definitely prevent a lot more waste than there would be.

      They actually do donate to food pantries. When the items on sale in the food departments don't sell by 8pm the day before expiration they freeze them and give them to pantries. Of course they rip all the labels off that have to do with Walmart ...The food that makes it to the trash is if there's a recall or the company says to toss them or it's the day of expiration and they toss them that night because the department manager/supervisor forgot to do the donations to pantries for that day so then good food makes it to the trash..

    i dont know which walmart you are at, but that does not happen at the Walmart I work at. I work in grocery reclamations. I am the person that gets rid of all the expired, damaged, and recalled stuff. I throw away as little as possible. My Walmart donates on an average of 17000 lbs of food a month to a local food pantry and soup kitchen. I donate all of bakery, deli, meat, produce and dry grocery that meets the donation criteria. The rest goes into our compostable bins which are picked up by a third party. The only thing I would throw away like what is seen in this video is something on recall where the recall instructions direct me to throw the product away. I agree that is a horrendous waste of food.

      This is to some of the comments that were made out there I don't remember who said what but yes they should donate more food to food banks but I think by law are not allowed to donate certain things or not to give certain things away because they think someone's going to sue them.?? I don't think the consumer pays for the waist and it could be possible but the store get store credit back I believe that's how that works so the store doesn't really care.. most big stores and corporations could care less about the little person all they care about is that all Mighty Dollar how much sales they rang up course they all still have a lot in loss prevention to.. and this is for the people that think that this food is horrible to eat let me let you in on a little secret half the stuff that's in the store might not be that good for you either you don't know where it's been you don't know who's been handling it you don't know how many germs it's had on it so sometimes the stuff in the dumpster is probably better not always but it's still sitting in the store getting more contaminated people come in and cough put their germs on the the piece of fruit and do people really take their time to wash all their stuff off I wape off even my creamer bottles when I bring food home it does not go inside my refrigerator until it is washed & wiped down..

If by chance the charitable organizations didn't show up to pick up the leftovers (happened at least once a week), everything was thrown away. I would definitely also be worried about getting sick, because of food is in the trash at a major retailer like Walmart often it is something that was recalled... I’ve been watching all of your videos and thought “we should do this!”, but of course we live in Texas and they have a law saying that if something is in a business dumpster, it still belongs to the business until the trash company picks it up. 😕 Hubby is a 100% disabled veteran and I have seizures due to an inoperable brain bleed, plus our 26 year old daughter passed away and we are raising her son who is 8 years old, AND we have our 17 year old grandson AND our 21 year old son and his fiancé all living with us. Several years ago at an Aldi store in Dallas I got 40 spiral cut hams over a five month period out of their dumpster. I got them as they came right out of the Aldi freezer so they were still frozen and it was also during cold weather. I took them home and stuck them in the freezer. Gave to neighbors and friends and nobody got sick. They all loved 'em. WHY would any store do this? Totally insane and Aldi is INSANE in regard to wasting edible food.
      And at another store I actually got 3,000 full-size Baby Ruth candy bars that were in sealed cases sitting right by the dumpster ready to be dumped the following day because they were 2 weeks expired. I donated 2,000 to a local food bank and gave the other 1,000 directly to homeless people in Dallas, Yes, I have pictures to prove it! No bullshit. Where I live the requirement is if a stores freezer goes down they have three hours to move it to another freezer. That time includes getting it to a Foodbank freezer. Most stores wait two hours hoping the power comes back on, technician shows up to repair, etc.. before trying to figure out plan B. They don’t usually call a Foodbank to pickup because there wouldn’t be enough time left. My guess is that all the food you found in the dumpster was from a down freezer.

    On another note, I've heard that businesses would rather throw food away than donate it because if the food is not 100% perfect, then they are opening themselves up to lawsuits if someone were to claim they got sick. Does anyone know if this is true?

      J Pet it does suck that one has to throw away so much food. You have only seen a fraction of what gets thrown out. And to answer your question. Yes its best to just throw it out because welcome to America home of the ill sue you for anything. I live in Las Vegas and work in the fast food industry and know people who work at casinos at banquets and tons of food it thrown out. Reason why is because if someone claims to get sick its a lawsuit and so many people out there looking for that easy money. It sucks because so much of that food could easily feed people in need. Before people started to sue they would give out that food to shelters and other places now it just all goes in the dumpster. So sad to see but it happens.

    • @Marklapfeifer
      @Marklapfeifer Před 5 lety +3

      Some more BS. There are federal and state laws that protect grocery stores from any kind of liability if they donate, not sell, reasonably wholesome food to 501 non-profits and churches. The federal law is called the Emerson Good Samaritan Law and it's been around since the mid-80's yet ignorant store managers know nothing about this law.Or. more likely they don't want to know as its easier to simply throw good food into the dumpster rather than working with a non-profit to pick it up on a daily basis. Lazy, lazy sickass stores that can't even get thrown out food to people in need.

    • @momzillainnova
      @momzillainnova Před 5 lety +1

      On October 1, 1996, President Clinton signed this act to encourage donation of food and grocery products to non-profit organizations for distribution to individuals in need. This law:
      Protects you from liability when you donate to a non-profit organization;
      Protects you from civil and criminal liability should the product donated in good faith later cause harm to the recipient;
      Standardizes donor liability exposure. You or your legal counsel do not need to investigate liability laws in 50 states; and
      Sets a floor of "gross negligence" or intentional misconduct for persons who donate grocery products. According to the new law, gross negligence is defined as "voluntary and conscious conduct by a person with knowledge (at the time of conduct) that the conductis likely to be harmful to the health or well-being of another person."
      The law changed many years ago. People just dont know it and chose to believe big corporations bullshit. Its cheaper for them to throw it away ....so thats what they do and they lie about why.
