Oh my golly, that is very hot for your climate. And humidity will make the “feel factor” even worse for you. 😓 😓 You and Hans stay hydrated and cool indoors. Thank you so much for the mention, Lyn. You are always a source of inspiration for me in the garden. 😃👍🏼☕️

My San Pedro went from 102F to covered in about 3cm of hail stones in less than 15 minutes, then 6cm of rain right after, and they have grown less than any other year. So, you are sooo right, do not water in that extreme heat... Thanks for the video! Many blessings and much love! In this hot weather,.... You and Hans, stay cool! ✌😎👍

Wow Lyn, thanks for your insight! I didn't know this at all but I thought I'd seen stress discolorations on some of my cacti who are spending the summer outside on a south facing balcony. I will certainly think of your advice, this week is still plenty hot here. Your epi's always look so fabulous, I am in awe! Over the last few years I've grown large epiphyllum cuttings, small epiplyllum cuttings, a few Lidl Schlumbergeras, a few types of Rhipsalis from seeds, but none fare here well being kept indoors year round. Or I just haven't found the right care routine yet and it's my own doing : ). But it is a treat to watch your beautifully leafy, mature, ever blooming specimens on the channel! On the other hand, I think my Adeniums are really loving this heat! They are kept indoors too (not enough balcony space), behind a hot window. 7 different types from seed, all 2-3 years old now and either they are coming into their own at this age, or they are enjoying these months in Ireland. They deflate like a tyre, I know to give them a really good drink then, and 48 hours later they are strong like a tree again: more idiotproof than my epiphytes I find : ) Best to you both from Dublin!

Btw I do get a lot of use from my ceiling fan these days (for the plants). It's nice to know that both myself and the plants enjoy this: best investment ever and, I believe, better for climate change than an airco.

Hi Nathalie :-D so happy to hear from you, the heatwave has been incredible here, although we have got off lucky compared to England where it has been so hot there, thats fantastic your Adeniums are loving the heat, I notice that my Adeniums are doing so much better now they are having this heat, when I had them in the polytunnel in the past during the summer they always looked limp, but having them out in this heat they are loving it, and thats amazing you have seven different types all seed sown, thats fantastic you have a ceiling fan too, it must be so wonderful to use with this heat, my office is so hot and the normal fan doesn't do much haha, I think the weather is going to cool down a bit from tomorrow onwards, thanks so much Nathalie for your wonderful friendship and support and comment and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Costa del Belfast to Costa del Dublin haha for a fantastic Sunday XXXX

OMG am I struggling with this right now. It's summer here, but we are also entering the monsoon season, which means heavy rains, high winds and hot weather. The storms come on so quickly and end so quickly, it's near impossible for me to know when to water my outdoor cacti and succulents. I lost another one this week, because we had two back to back storms, and I'd just watered it a few days beforehand. I think I'm just gonna let mother nature take care of the watering for right now, until the monsoons pass. I've lost too many plants! I know you and my other UK and Ireland friends were getting blasted with heat this week, it's definitely a real doozie if you're not used to that kind of heat all the time!

we were lucky not o get what we got in 1911, this time a few days of way above the norm but 1911 United Kingdom heat wave was one of the most severe periods of heat to hit the country with temperatures around 36 °C (97 °F). The heat began in early July and didn't let up until mid September where even in September temperatures were still up to 33 °C (91 °F). It took 79 years for temperature higher to be recorded in the United Kingdom during 1990 United Kingdom heat wave. did water my cacti but was at the coolest time, they drank loads and the ones what really needed it soon drank the water i left them sitting in. its strange and normally by now they lot more fatter but this year it seems i cannot give them enough water but only a few of them, one has been re potted at start of season and only seen a little bit lagy growth but did come from a very overgrown pot what it spent years in so that one might still be adjusting. temps are cooling of now so next few days i give them another really good water :) and go from there as i might need to check roots but i monitor it for now

Would it depend on the species of cacti? I say this because where I live in Southern Arizona we get monsoon thunderstorms during the peak heat of the afternoon from July-September. I can be 45 celsius at 4:00pm and by 4:30pm it's 35 celsius and pouring down rain and heat right back up to 45 the next day. The cacti in the desert grow and bloom massively during this time of year, and do not seem to be stressed. I know my Prickly Pear loves water throughout the hottest parts of the summer, yet notice my South American cactus (forgot the species) slow down in growth.

Lyn I have a 40+ year old over 7ft. Cactus. 5 years ago during the summer's it’s tallest branch dropped its head at least by 12". I watered it and it raised its head. I now have two branches that have dropped their heads again by 12”. The soil is moist. It is very humid. Suggestions on how to help this old man. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

WOW at your 7ft 40 year old cactus Gail :-D I think what may be happening is because of the warm hot humid summer, your cactus is having a little bit of a rest, sometimes cacti can droop their branches and pads in hot weather, I have quite a few of my Cacti especially my Opuntia 'Prickly pear' cacti that are drooping their pads due to the heat, they should 'perk' them selves back up again once the weather cools down, as long as there is no signs of any rot then its safe to let your cactus rest a bit and it should pick back up once the cooler weather arrives, if your cactus if you can keep your cactus dry with little to no watering this should help too, here in Ireland we are having a freak heatwave and I have had to keep the majority of my cacti dry until it starts to cool back down, thanks so much Gail for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX
