Yo estuve en la última función, tres días más tarde. Schager hizo una bonita versión del Rienzi. Y lo aplaudí. Lástima que al ser en concierto, se perdiera un poco de la magia wagneriana.

Obwohl Wagner selbst es nicht mehr so sehr schätzte, ist diese Oper bemerkenswert. Dass diese Oper auch einen gewissen Herrn A begeisterte, ist nunmehr eine Fußnote der Geschichte und dabei soll es bleiben. Was kann die Musik dafür, wenn sie wahnsinnige und sogar Massenmörder anziehend finden…

I dare say there are countless versions. I am happy and grateful to still hear much of the original score in this version. Cosima Wagner ordered that the opera be violated and that all elements reminiscent of Meyerbeer be removed. The version recorded in Berlin in 1942 with Max Lorenz was based on this. Perhaps you are referring to this version. However, it does not do justice to Wagner's early masterpiece. As Hans von Bülow said: Rienzi is and remains Meyerbeer's best opera.
