    I installed the GatorTrax retractable cover on our 2020 GMC 3500HD standard bed. Very similar to Larry’s. Main difference is it doesn’t use the strap and it can be locked in any position. When you get into this price range I think most all covers are of decent quality.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  Před 4 lety

      I wish I had looked at the gator trac more closely before o made my decision, being able to lock in any position is a huge benefit. I got decision fatigue and ended up with the roll n lock because of the low profile. Thanks for you input, hopefully other people will give the gator trax a look. Larry

    I like its sleek look. It's also far more weather resistant than the one that came with my truck. How cool to have the custom "second" locking" position. Nice job, Larry, and what a great father's day gift with the install. Very good video. Thanks for sharing.

      Timothy, will you be leaving the cover partially open when driving? We do when pulling the fifth wheel. We have lost a couple of bin covers. Plus the strap to open and close the cover can be annoying. FYI. Hope your install goes well. Alice

      Downsizing Makes Cents Hello Alice, yes I really like the idea of having it half closed while hooked up and traveling. I will keep the lid thing in mind I think I will carry mostly tools in the Dewalt Tool boxes I have so those should ride alright. Might have to rig something I guess when it comes to the strap 🤔

    I think I looked at every possible brand and cover before I ended up buying my soft trifold cover. No regrets so far. There is no perfect cover and every one or type has their cons. My last truck I had a roll up but with the new truck I wanted something that did not intrude into the bed that may interfere with the pin box (had that issue with our last truck and fifthwheel) or robbed space above the bed rails and that the plus of a folding cover - no rails to interfere. There are workarounds for not seeing the hitch with a trifold such as adding a couple center marks on the cover and lining it up with the hitch or a hitch mirror on your fifthwheel.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  Před 4 lety

      I agree I could have worked around the hitch viewing problem, great idea about making a mark to line up, I really wanted a bakfkip mx4, thanks for your input from your experience. Larry

    Great video! I was about to buy a BAK rolling cover for my Chevy 3500, but when I watched your video I realized that it would block my view when hooking up to my Montana 5th wheel.
    So many different cover options available, however I really like the Rock n lock unit you installed, so I will look at ordering one to delivery in Canada.

      @kims782 Před 3 lety

      @@DownsizingMakesCents Can you share why Larry would prefer the Retrax Pro? We are looking at both the Retrax and the Roll N Lock for our new Ram 3500, and we're leaning towards the Roll N Lock. One thing about the Retrax Pro is it doesn't have a fully enclosed housing where the cover rolls up. So if there is water on top of the bed cover when you roll it up, water will get inside the truck bed. The rails of the Retrax Pro also stick up higher than the Roll N Lock. Do you have plenty of clearance between the pin box and the side rails when you are making sharp turns? I've seen some where the pin box hits the side rail. Thank you for the great video - there was a lot of thought put into it.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  Před 3 lety

      @@kims782 He gets really frustrated with the strap of all things. He keeps trying different ways to keep it from flapping or getting caught because we tow with the cover over the bed if the truck up to the hitch. But you are right about the water issue with the ReTrax- he figures he’d have to be creative to fix that. That’s the only complaint I e heard from him.

      We have about 5 inches of clearance between the bed rail and the fifth wheel. Sometimes on tight turns over humps or dips in the road it gets close but has never hit.
